It varies, but the cheapest brass cased, copper jacket will be 17-23cpr, usually MagTech, Sellier&Bellot, or similar. Most of that ammo is fine. Use a tracker (I use slickguns, but there are others), and remember to factor in shipping.
Steel case it a little more hit and miss. I have guns that won't cycle Tula or Wolf, but have never had issues with Barnaul, who makes the "Bear" ammo lines. The price is similar to the cheapest brass, though I use a tarp to catch the brass cases if I shoot a lot. Fudds will pay 2-5 cents for the brass most of the time and more during a panic.
Also, Winchester is pretty mediocre and WalMart will almost never have the best deal.

I work at cabelas so i usually use herters. Goes on sale frequently for 11.89 for 50 9mm and never really had an issue

I lesrned that when it comes to ammo don't cheap out TOO much. If i buy cheap, i buy the cheapest Federal ammo i could find. Other ammo fails to load or eject usually (except on my 870P, that thing eats anything and everything )

I've shot probably 10 different kinds and I'd say go with Fiocchi if you can find it cheap online. Check SGAmmo or use Wikiarms.
Fiocchi is the hottest (bulk) 115gr stuff I've shot - about 1200FPS out of a 4-5" barrel which is really full-power loads and a good representation of 9mm defense ammo. S&B is also on the 'warm' side while Blazer brass, Magtech, American Eagle, Freedom Munitions and some other are loaded quite weak.
Federal Champion, in my experience, is loaded hotter than fucking American Eagle which was really disappointing. Generally stick to quality foreign 9mm (Fiocchi, S&B, maybe PPU) if you want good power brass ammo for a reasonable price. Also, 124gr NATO loads by Winchester have decent reviews as far as power goes but will probably be overpriced at Walmart.

You guys buy it on SGAmmo? I've never shopped there but they have Lawman dirt cheap and their shipping rates are really good.
I guess I missed out on SG because I always looked for 'free' shipping and paid more because of it. 9mm Lawman is 20CPR at SG and shipping brings it up to about 21.5CPR.
I know Lawman is top-tier bulk 9mm but is it 'hot' like Fiocchi and some other foreign stuff? I'm tempted to try some 147gr ammo.

I usually buy it locally, though I'm tempted to order some bulk Lawman from SG as well. Yeah, it's a hotter ammo meant to duplicate the recoil and POI of their duty rounds. I haven't tried their 147 grain, but I'd like to pick some up. I prefer 124 but shoot 115 every now and then.

Lawman's good. I generally get PMC, because the Taiwanese have gotten good at making ammo.
I always pick up the GECO shit when SG gets it. That's some top tier plinking ammo for dirt cheap.
