Hey /k/, I want to get a bolt action gun but Im not sure what my options are. Are mosins still around $150? What else is there in that price range?
It's really a crap shoot right now. In my town Mosins go for on average $250 and while that's not too bad people will tell you to save $50 more and spend $300 on a K31 but I've never seen one of those go for less than $500. You can also find K98s in that $250-$300 price range but I've never seen one in person.

If you up it to $250 you can find all sorts of used modern bolt guns that will shoot better than a Mosin.

Mosin prices online are just barely under $200. You might get lucky in a local deal to still net one for <$150, but it will require patience. Only other thing you can find online for <$200 will be .22s.
Turk Mausers go pretty cheap, though surplus 8x57mm isn't as easy to find as 7.62x54mmR.

You can buy a chinese mosin for $200, or a russian mosin for $250. Of course, there are many other nationalities of mosins, but those are the most common. I strongly recommend against buying a chinese mosin. Don't pay more than $250 for a mosin unless it is a 'sniper' mosin or it is unique/rare.
Somethings to consider (I'll include very basic considerations, because I do not know how well you know guns):
1. Remember to check the bore, make sure it has good rifling.
2. Make sure the serial numbers match
3. If the mosin has this mark anywhere on it (usually the receiver, but also the stock sometimes), that means it has been refurbished (this refurbishment would have happened decades ago, not recently), which greatly diminishes its historical value. Most, or almost all mosins you find on the market in the US and Canada are refurbs. Refurbs aren't horrible, but again, poor historical value, and the serial numbers don't actually match. When the mosins were refurbished, they took all the guns apart and put random pieces back on random guns, and force matched the serial numbers.
4. Consider researching the different marks and inscriptions on the mosin. It can tell you a LOT about its history.
5. If you buy a bayonet for your mosin, please be aware that the bayonet is meant to be a permanent.semi permanent attachment. It's fairly easy to put on, but extremely difficult to take off, and if you do take it off, you will probably scratch up the barrel.

I think Type 53s are the only Mosins still around $150.
I have a Type 53 and it's great, its definitely killed some people in its time.

Store by me is trying to sell a K98A with a mgf date of 1915 for just under $400. Then again, DPRMass so remove a hundred or so and that's top-end what everyone else in the States pay.

You can find mauser actions in that price range but I haven't seen an actual K98 in that range that wasn't beat to shit in quite awhile.
Not uncommon to find yugo, czech, or turks sub 300 but the ammo is more expensive than 54r.
I bought a K31 mismatch for 200$ only a couple years ago but have since added a proper one.

Chink nuggets are a real crap shoot.
Have acquired 3, none of the which I would really call shooters considering how many manufacturers parts are in all three rifles. They all headspace fine but each of the three has some issue regarding chambering or extraction. If a single one of them was a well functioning rifle it still would have beat out a M44/M38 in value but whatever. YMMV.

My Type 53 works better than any Russian Mosin I've owned or used.
That being said out of the 4 that I could've bought at the store, 3 of them were absolute trash.

Well, I just walked into a Fleet Farm and they already had all their T53s out for some other guy. I took his sloppy seconds.

There was only the one arsenal making T53 carbines, the state rifle factory at Chongqing.

Mosins are decent guns when they're below $200, otherwise you're better off getting a Mauser. Still, I got mine almost a year ago for $160 and it came with all matching numbers and all the available accessories. That's not a common thing though, but if you see a deal like that then I would suggest jumping on it.
