And if you seriously don't think they have people watching 4chan (looking at you /b/) after all the shit that has come out of this quarantine zone your lying to yourself. IE, virginia tech, cake + pie threads, DDOS/Hacker shit, that washington murder, that recent /pol/ protest shooting crap, etc etc.

Overall you'll fill out an SF86 that is pretty much "i'm not a terrorist and don't own foreign shit", then what ever agency is available will go to your references and spider web effect out from there to make sure your credible and not a retard and/or drug dealer. Most failures are from un-justifiable debt (student loans/mortgage are fine) or gambling problems.

My job is going to be Op Intel for Airforce (1N0X1) and I know I'm going to have to make a list of bases I'd like to be stationed at, but I have no clue where they'd realistically send me.

I'd like to go overseas, Europe if it's possible, but I have a feeling it's gonna be somewhere here and somewhere real boring.

Can someone with this job, or anyone really with knowledge of AF bases give me a good list of bases to choose, with priority being ones overseas?

Do relationships work going into the military
I've got a girlfriend and she knew I was enlisting right from the start and she has always been confident in our relationship and being able to handle herself well.
>>
>>29265753
she's going to have needs. needs she won't be able to fulfill with you since you won't be there. she might wander elsewhere for those needs.

there's many a story of a wrecked relationship because one got deployed or was otherwise far far away
>>
>>29265765
I told her this and she just says something like "Oh well, nothing I can do about this. I'll just have to deal with it". I admire her confidence in it but I don't think she understands the seriousness of it.
>>
>>29265781

Never. We've never been more than a week apart at the most.

I'm not coming back and she knows this. Instead she wants to sacrifice her entire family and friends and move all the way to San Diego to be with me. I told her I'd have to hit e4 first and that's around 20 months away.

So I went from E1 to E4 in 10 months and finished Basic Leadership Course with about 17 months TIS (According to the CSM at the post I graduated at I was the lowest TIS graduate in its history) and apparently this is a huge deal. Does this shit benefit me at all?

I'm not even high speed. I just haven't fucked up yet
>>
>>29263764
completely fuckin new guy here with a couple questions, but first: I want to enlist, I just dont know where yet. I was thinking marines but as I am trying to figure it out more ( and lurking moar on /k/) I'm leaning towards the Army because of the possibility of going ranger or SF, and because of a couple of vietnam vets on both sides of my family. But alas I am still a faggot virgin neet on a taiwanese wildlife porn research and fetishes forum. So I come to the experts with these questions:

1. How does one decide where to enlist?

2. Is the transition from civilian to military hard or overwhelming?

3. What can I bring with me (if anything) if I do enlist.

4. Can I bring my tacticool shit like knives and gloves and hats and gear shit?

5. What's some advice you can give to a FNG when looking back in hindsight on your experiences. (maybe going to a recruiting station or any other first time things.)

5. How do you get govt. issued gear and do you get to keep it and take all of it home? (gear, knives, guns, other clothes)

thank you for your time and your service !!!!!
>>
>>29265969
BLC that early isn't a big deal. They used to send PFCs to WLC fairly often.

Dunno how you made E4 in 10 months when the minimum TIS for a promotion waiver is 18 months though.
>>
>>29266296
Army E8 (MSG) here

>1. How does one decide where to enlist?
The Army hands out promotions like candy. I can't speak on the other branches but you have to talk to each one and see what they have for you. Make sure you come here and tell us what each recruiter told you so we can pick it apart and call them out on their bullshit, because they can and will lie to you.

>2. Is the transition from civilian to military hard or overwhelming?
Not really. Basic training is nothing like what active duty or reserves do. You'll spend most of your time cleaning or doing preventative maintenance or watching power point presentations.

>3. What can I bring with me (if anything) if I do enlist.
To basic? You'll get a packing list and you'll get to buy some things at reception. My advice, buy cough drops if they let you have them because that's the closest thing you'll get to candy there.

To your duty station? Bring whatever you think you'll need or want to have.
>4. Can I bring my tacticool shit like knives and gloves and hats and gear shit?
Sure, but you won't even be using most of that shit a lot of the times. Don't fall for the romanticized image of the armed forces. 90% of the time you're just there not really doing shit.

>5. What's some advice you can give to a FNG when looking back in hindsight on your experiences. (maybe going to a recruiting station or any other first time things.)
Volunteer for everything in basic training. Being a grey man works, but if you use basic training to overcome your fears rather than hide behind them, you'll be much better off.

>5. How do you get govt. issued gear and do you get to keep it and take all of it home? (gear, knives, guns, other clothes)
The general rule is anything that touches your skin, you get to keep. So uniforms, PCs, hats, gloves, .etc. You'll figure out what you'll get to keep and what you won't get to keep long before your first duty station.
>>
>>29266296
1. Usually the recruiter nearest to you. This isn't rocket science.

2. "The transition" is pretty much BCT. It will suck, but it isn't really hard.

3. Your recruiter will give you a packing list for training. It's basically the clothes on your back and some hygiene supplies.

4. No. Not to your initial training.

5. Don't just go with the flow at the recruiter. Ask questions, get the job you want. It's your career, and you get a few major chances to control it.

5-2. You usually don't get to keep shit nowadays. During the wars? It happened more often.
>>
>>29266319
>Dunno how you made E4 in 10 months when the minimum TIS for a promotion waiver is 18 months though.

If he's in the Reserves, all his commander has to do is sign off on his 4187 and he's whatever they want him to be below E5.
>>
>>29266324
awesome, I really appreciate the responses.

I should have said I want to join the infantry if that matters when talking about daily duties etc. Also, in basic training you have the option to 'volunteer' for stuff? I thought everything in training was mandatory? Can you explain 'being a grey man'? I basically want to bring my favorite hat, my paramilitary 2, and gloves. Do you have to wear issued stuff 24/7 or can you wear your own shit sometimes? if not I won't bring it.
>>29266332
Okay, what I meant to say is how does one come to the conclusion on what branch to devote your American life to and be apart of for eternity on Earth? After initial training what do you do or where do you go? I haven't seen any recruiters at all yet, and I'm a bit nervous and don't wanna get cucked. It's like negotiating your price and rates buying a car off the lot, and I've never done that either, just research. So when I'm done with my service the most I get to go home with is my name patches?

>>29266324
>>29266332

Also, seeing as both of you have or are serving, can you speak to how hard it actually is to join Special Forces or the Rangers? Requirements you know of or a mind-state one needs to have or be in?
>>
>>29266324
>buy cough drops if they let you have them because that's the closest thing you'll get to candy there.
For some people like me, cough drops were more like currency. Some people would cover a firewatch shift for like 10 of them.

Its impossible to say whether or not you could make it work.

Some people can maintain relationships despite long periods of separation without any problems and some people require constant attention otherwise they bang the milkman.

If you're both young just break it off, tye classic recipe for disaster is someone enlisting when they're 18 and leaving their highschool girlfriend back at home.

There's various ways that goes to shit but it more or less always ends up wits her banging another dude or 7.

FELLOW VETERANS

does any of you guys feel lost after getting out? I got out of Active Duty 2.5 years ago, and I just feel so confused and hopeless. I don't know what to do, or what's the point of even going on. I do armed security work and make pretty decent money. But I don't enjoy it, I don't know what I want. I feel like a waste of space

Do something outside of work that you enjoy.

If your working hours don't facilitate that, quit and get a different job doing something more interesting. Alternatively go to school.

Or you can just be said and eventually blow your brains out.

I was leaning Air Force yesterday, but someone made a great argument for Army.
I have some additional questions to completely sway me, however.

1. Is retraining possible in the Army? Is there a rank cap to retraining like in the AF?
2. Will Rangers be an option for me down the road if I'm interested in that later in my career?
3. What are some good MOSs in the Army for making dough in civilian life?

Please help me out /k/

First time on this board, so I apologize for my lack of knowledge.

I'm an army reservist in california. I'm a high school senior and I leave for basic in august. I'm a 25B, IT. My unit deployed I believe last in 2008 in Iraqi Freedom. What's the likely hood we will deploy before October 2021? Looking for opinions.

In addition, it's all coming down on me at once, and I'm scared of basic and I'm scared or being deployed, mostly because I'll be away from my girlfriend. I don't know how to deal with this.
>>
>>29267673
What are your freedoms like in Ait?
>>
>>29267713
Depends on where your at and how your platoon sergeant runs things. Like for example we can't go off post at fort Sill but practically everywhere else they can. And because we used are phones so much this cycle our Platoom Sergeants going to take the next classes phones immediately and they will have to earn them back.
>>
>>29267691
Here we go, son... sit down, listen up..

Basic... it sucks, you get yelled at a lot, you're wrong, even when you're right, you hardly sleep, and the kill hats will single handedly have it out for every single one of you....
But it's okay, you'll survive that.
Your chances of getting deployed are pretty low, so don't worry about that..
If you do get deployed, your girlfriend will likely cheat on you, likely with your best friend, accept this as life, and worry about yourself, because in the end, pussy from all over the world is pretty much the same, it's not worth worrying about.
Focus on yourself, and what you're doing, and how to do it, rather than your high school fuck buddy, and you'll do just fine.
>>
>>29267691
>What's the likely hood we will deploy before October 2021?
Very likely, but don't be afraid of that or basic training.

If you're over the age of 21, I don't care if you're in the worst shape of your life, basic training is easy as fuck, it's tailored to teenagers who are just getting out of high school.

You have to do what's right for you and not what makes your girlfriend comfortable. If she's "the one" she'll understand your decision and she'll still be there when you come back.
>>
>>29267744
>Your chances of getting deployed are pretty low, so don't worry about that..

Dunno senpai, reserve units generally deploy in cycles. There's a very good chance his unit's time in that cycle will come up in 2021. Actually I'd be shocked if that unit doesn't deploy SOMEWHERE in the next 5 years
>>
>>29267691
You'll get through it. Worrying about things just wears you down and does nothing to help the situation. Try faking confidence, sometimes that does the trick.

Basic is something you have to just be in the moment for. It's something you have to do, and you'll come out the other side. How unfun it is depends on how fast you get with the program. Start building yourself up now.

As for when you're likely to deploy, ask people in your chain of command for a guess. And understand that the military doesn't make firm plans.

And as for being away from your girlfriend, she'll either cheat on you or she won't. Better to find that out sooner than later.

>I don't know how to deal with this.
You keep putting one foot in front of the other. You concentrate on that and everything else will sort itself out.
>>
>>29266483
You can google the requirements for Rangers or SF, mostly you need to be a top 1% athlete and then manage to not get injured in training, give up from sleep deprivation, be the strongest person around mentally, and get really lucky.

Not saying you Dont already know that, but just in case you haven't been in touch with a recruiter about this stuff specifically.

I called them and put medical technician, which is a General Entry position as my first job preference with the ADF last week so ill probably have my assessment day within the next 3 months.

Because they won't let you deploy unless your dental is good anyways. The military makes you see a dentist every year. And if your dental health isn't good, they won't let you deploy

A few allergies with the medical documents to prove it, the recruiter said I'd have to get it waivered. I ended up just going to college.
>>

Be specific.

Med and food allergies are never a problem. The only thing that requires a waiver is if you mention the magic word "anaphylaxis," and even then the waiver usually only takes a couple weeks to process.
>>
>>29269722
It's peanut allergies, which my doctor said could potentially be life-threatening. If I do try to reenlist I just want to know ahead of time if MEPS already has anything on me.

If you're asking whether there is still a file on you, yes, there is. As I said before, whether you can get in all depends on what you told the medical history doctor at meps. If you don't remember then I can't help you.

Regardless, I say go for it and see what happens. If you can't get in then you can't get in, oh well; you'll never know what it is like to have someone your age yelling in your face because he has some cloth "arrows" on his arm. An 85 on which component? Did they have you take the asvab instead of a practice afoqt for some reason?

One of the biggest pieces of advice I can give is to make sure your study materials are up to date. For example the hidden figures section is no longer on the afoqt, it would suck to waste time devising strategies for it.

The recruiter at the station called it a EST practice test so I'd assume it was one for the ASVAB that they just use for some reason. I guess it could be similar albeit without having the aviation modules on it. As for the 85, I think it was for the composite score? There were 60s for other scores but the recruiter at the station didn't explain them, just said he'd forward the scores to my recruiter up in Patrick.

And yeah, I noticed that when looking between two guides I bought for cheap. Been trying to memorize and recognize all the aviation jargon as everything else I can more or less perform well on.

Yeah, that was probably an asvab test. Don't fall for the old trick of them stating that since there are no officer slots available you enlisting will put you in a good position to be an officer later; they may be trying to set you up for that.

I'm prior enlisted and I'm going through the process of getting commissioned in the Air Force currently. The asvab is a complete joke, but the afoqt is like high school algebra 1 and 2 level math - college algebra if you don't remember high school. Take your studying for it seriously; yes, the material is basic but you are strictly timed. You need to be completing a word problem every 70 seconds in order to finish the math sections so you'll want to review all sorts of odd math stuff that you may have forgotten over the years.

People who aren't going for a pilot slot just ignore the aircraft information section as your pilot and nav scores are thrown out for line officers.

Rotated blocks is gone as well. Those sections were swapped for reading comprehension, situation awareness and a personality assessment - if a guide you're looking at has those three sections in it then it is up to date.
>>
>>29270147

No problem. A dude I tested with who was trying to be a pilot told me he read the entire FAA handbook in preparation...

I unironically recommend going to the Air Force reddit if you want in depth info on jobs and OTS. There are very few people on 4chan who go Air Force and even less who are getting commissioned so you're unlikely to get any useful information here.

Since you have internet access after training hours in OTS there are a few people there right now who post on reddit. One of them who graduated last month made a very detailed blog on every week of training; it is kind of pretentious because he isn't prior service and he tends to whine a little about the training at times, but it is still a good read.

I guess when you're around a bunch of college aged kids who sit in the dorms stuff their faces withfast food you probably do feel like a stud by running a few miles every week.

I was and enlisted Marine and the PT they do in ots sounds like a joke. On the cardio days they run like two miles and do calisthenics, on the strength days they just do body weight exercises. The candidates have access to the base gym, I'm assuming because they know the PT isn't nearly enough if someone is hoping to max out their pft score.
>>
>>29270531
Fair enough. And holy shit, really? That's nothing. I'd be in the gym pretty often, then.
>>
>>29269482

After reading the blog and talking to some officers I have come to the conclusion that ots is purposely run lile more of a professional development course than a military indoc one, the last stat I checked was that 40% of people who go are prior enlisted.

They don't baby the officer trainees like in enlisted basic or OCS for other branches. It is more like they give you a basic structure and it is up to you and your flight to figure out how to meet the standards, or else you fail out. I am excited to go, it seems to me like this system probably takes in highly motivated people and produces superior officers.

I hurt my knee from a combination of squatting and then running in the same day 15 or 16 days ago, and I leave for AF basic in 2 weeks but it still hasn't healed all the way, and I'm worried it might not by the time I leave for basic.

It isn't constant pain at all, in fact it never really hurts unless I walk around for a fair bit (~10 mins.)

My question is, do I tell my recruiter since I'm about to leave? Should I just wait 2 weeks and hope it's better?

My contract requires TS clearance so I'm afraid if I see a doctor they will see and it might DQ me.

I seriously don't know what to do. I need advice. Anyone experience anything like this? I feel like the universe is against me right now, I was set and physically prepared for this, and suddenly I might be fucked right when I was so close.

I know the program is difficult to get into. They are currently only accepting applicants with stem degrees and for civilians you have to have at least a 3.5 gpa, which is pretty crazy considering the national average for computer science is 2.8. Makes you wonder; why would someone who was exceptional in school want to be an Air Force network ops officer and do retard work for a living?

OTS guys apparently get phone and internet access on the first day after 1800. At this point in my life if I were to go to Marine or Navy OCS my biggest problem would probably be trying to not laugh in the face of a staff sergeant who is younger than me, yelling at me, who probably has no combat action ribbon yet a couple campaign medals.

>>29271303

Yeah.. the general science and aircraft information sections are the only ones I know that I didn't do well on.

>>29271596

The situation awareness section will probably trip up anyone who isn't prior service. Try to remember that the answers which involve jumping or otherwise undermining the chain of command in a non-combat situation are usually the worst choice and acting as a mediator are the best.

>>29271618

Yeah, it is Venus. I had no idea what that was, it sounded like some kind of folklore biblical shit. I was upset that it was my first question and it definitely set the tone for the entire section, it was full of weird abstract crap that a 3rd grade science teacher may just mention in passing to their class.

Worst of all, at seven minutes it is the shortest section of the afoqt. They apparently expect applicants to actually know all this shit and just breeze through it, kind of like aircraft information. I guess they want you to be studying thousands of random "scientific facts" to prep for it.
>>
>>29271775
I saw that as the trend for the situational awareness questions, yeah. Some of the practice questions in one of my booklets I got wrong cuz I figured doing nothing would be worse than doing something dumb. And hoo boy, if that's going to be the tone of the science section then I may as well look through some SAT/ACT practice books.

How competitive is Navy helo aviation?

Never-gonna-happen-tier like fighter pilots? or doable with a degree from a state school and a boner for helicopters?
>>
>>29272199
I'm not 100 percent sure, my uncle is a helicopter pilot in the navy, just getting out. He said its still pretty competitive and he's a naval academy graduate.

I'm also a corpsman if you have other questions. Honestly though in the military its pretty fair as long as you're motivated for your goal and not a fuck up you can realistically get anywhere.
I still feel kind of bad for my uncle because airliners aren't really looking at him for hire since his hours aren't enough and rotary wing isn't good enough it seems.

You're a corpsman? Did you enlist recently?
How often to corpsman contracts come up?

I am joining after college since Ive got super mediocre grades, but I still want to stay in the medical field so I've still got a chance at med school down the road.

Are their more elite units that corpsmen can get into that arent quite special forces, but still better than marine rifle platoons? Stuff kinda like SARCs, but a different type of job.

How hard is it to get into Navy aviation? I was planning on applying. I did good on the astb btw.
>>
>>29272387
whatd you get? its worth a shot if you have a decent gpa (3.5) less so if your degree is stem
check the airwarriors link
>>
>>29272308
I've been in for about a year.
Despite us being super overmanned billets still come up very frequently evidently.
As far as elite units go but not SF, Recon is the best bet, a great place to be for advancement too, I haven't met a recon corpsman who didn't make chief in under 12 years.
As far as an HM from A school and field med training you could hope to go to a marine LAR battalion, thats what I hope to get soon. LAR is light amphibious reconnaissance. Get to roll around and dismount in LAVs and do missions with recon.

I got 9/7/8

then dont worry youre a shoo in im sure you have a good gpa/degree as well
try to get everything done by april-ish for the next board iirc
they need aviators
>>
>>29272498
My vision isn't good enough but I'm planning on getting surgery. I'll have to wait for a later board I guess. Those earlier posts got me worried that jets and helos are hard to get into. I just don't want C-130s or anything big.
>>
Whats a cool airforce job? I cant into SOF because I dont wana, but I like out door stuff, computers, radios sound fun, and guns. I scored super well on the asvab and I am swearing in on Thursday. I can use some help filling out my job list.

Does any Armyfag have the recruiting message that lists MOS options open to prior service enlisted?

I'm trying to reenlist with 5 years prior service in the Marine Corps and I don't want to waste the recruiters time by going in and having them dig for info for me when I won't signing, I just want to know my options before I choose between reenlistment and LE work

>>
>>29272637
It changes, but it's almost always 18X + 35P. Don't count on anything else being on there.
>>
>>29265841
They dont. They make you spread 'em. Just dont fart.
>>
>>29272791
they have to shove in a finger to see if youre healthy
thats how my physical went
kind of like penis inspection with my gym teacher back in gradeschool
>>
will i get dq'ed if i have an ingrown hair zit near my dick?
>>
>>29272671
dont tell the FFL about that and youre in
>>
>>29272671
You moron you could have just not told the Army and avoided any mos that made you get top secret clearance.
>>
>>29272911

hurrr
>>
>>29272811
Nigga they did not have to do that. At all. Sorry... but you got ass fucked.
>>
so my recruiter said that TS guys couldn't access medical records, is this true?
>>
>>29272933
>didn't catch the penis inspection day meme
>>
>>29272941
You're recruiter is a lying piece of shit.
You give them the right to dig through your records.
If it's secret clearance and you don't give them your insurance info or any records from hospitals you've visited and you give them no reason to look through them, you're home free.
But if they're going through your shit for top secret, then they will find it and you're fucked.

Tl;dr: They can access it.
>>
>>29272973
Your recruiter*
>>
>>29272973
okay, i'll just shoot for something that's not intel then lol
>>
>>29272973
you think i could reclass after i've been in a bit and be good? (went to a rehab thing because my mom is a tard and overrreacted when i was younger)
>>
>>29273032
You'd still have to get clearance and waive the right to keep your medical records private.
>>
>>29273075
well yeah but would i be okay disclosing then or should i just forget about ever getting a TS?
>>
>>29273095
If you have to lie to enlist getting TS is a bad idea.
Or you could wait patiently for a major war to kick up, enlist then and get your medical shit waived easily, and have 0 problems getting TS and going on with your Intel career.
>>
>>29273130
fuck me i'll just be a cav scout or a medic then, i was wanting to be a 35 mike anyways

Don't know if you're still here....

1) Yes, it is possible to retrain. Though your options dwindle the higher you get and the longer you've been in. SSG (E-6) is normally the limit on being able to retrain. Of course there are exceptions.

2) Rangers are always an option if you meet the basic qualifications.

3) More than I care to list. Many MOS's translate directly into the civilian sector. This would be something to discus with your recruiter.

4) Yes and no. This is unit dependent.
>>
What level of clearance would a sub nuke need to get? Not worried, just curious.
>>
>>29273130
Silly question. I'm kind of in the same boat, with the added bonus that the bill is on my credit history (I was homeless at the time). Should I worry if I'm not going for TS?
>>
>>29273367
Top secret

but why be a Nuke
>>
>>29272637
What was your rank and long have you've been out?
>>
>>29271211
Don't.

Just... don't.
>>
>>29273390
I thought they only needed top secret for subs that are doing special ops, otherwise just secret.
>>
>>29273569
Can you expand on that? Hazardous cleanup is kind of something that I thought would be cool. And I figured there'd be a little security, and that I could at the very least have a long career.

Now here's the part where you laugh. Lay some knowledge on me.
>>
>>29273653
you will never do your job
>>
>>29273653
>Hazardous cleanup is kind of something that I thought would be cool.

Might be, if you actually did it. The US military hasn't actually conducted large scale CBRN operations in decades.
>>
how stupid am i for wanting to go cav scout
>>
>>29273715
>>29273709
Wait, what the fuck would I be doing then?
>>
What's the best enlisted gig in the Army? Out of all the MOSs
>>
>>29273739
If you're lucky you'll wind up in one of a few chemical units and at the very least get to train on your job. Most likely in charge of the unit's CBRN equipment as a second job while working operations.
