My brother is turning 18 soon, and I plan on buying him a firearm. Both him and I lurk /k/, and I want something under $500, it's the most I can afford right now. From what I know, he really likes rifles and some shotguns, but I'm really not sure what to get him. Any help would be appreciated, thank you. Pic unrelated

What type of action? Semi auto, break, bolt?
>>

He was thinking bolt if i remember right. He's shot a Marlin break before and wasn't too big of a fan.

Savage Axis 223? Or maybe if you can throw in $50 get a Mossberg MVP 556. It takes AR mags, it's accurate, cheap plinking. A great starter and multi role, can hunt with it, kill with it, plink with it.

SKS and some ammo
if you got some more money get a Low tier AR or AK if you can find one.

The problem is your budget.
If you get him and AR you should at least give him some mags and some ammo and the same goes for AK.

Sks is a pretty solid choice but he might not appreciate it as much if he's into Call of duty and that kind of stuff.

the AR is low tier and Don't like steel case but I think your brother will be very happy and it teaches him to clear problems if you want to only see the positive sides

How much experience does he have shooting? People keep suggesting semi autos and stuff but I always thought conventional wisdom was to learn on a .22 rifle?

SKS is no longer under $500

>$280 brand new, with lifetime warranty from buds gun shop
>over $200 left over to buy him ammo, extra mags, a sling, and transport case.

>tfw will never know these cozy bro shooting feels
>tfw the amount of hoops you have to jump through to get a bolt-action

Just buy him a semi gucci lower and a 350$ ar kit. It's a rifle he'll keep and update and add on to forever. He can change uppers for it along the road. He'll never get bored with it and even if he says bolt action nigga really you don't think he'd rather have an AR? He can shoot plenty of calibers as time goes on and its the only gift that'll keep on giving. He'll learn to build onto it and maintain his weapon better. You could try for maybe a wasr if he's into it or really just get him a mauser in .308 and as much ammo as the money left over will afford.

>>29261489
Don't do this, the ar-7 is gimmick tier and has absolute shite accuracy
>>

Any answer other than .22 is wrong.

Ruger 10-22 and a bunch of ammo.

Its a good easy to use plinker and it uses cheap ammo so he can learn to shoot on the cheap.

It also has a huge aftermarket so he can add shit to it if he wants.

Savage Mark II F SR.

It's a tac driver and he will be able to shoot it often. It would leave you about 200or 300 $ for a scope

That plus

Would be an excellent precision starter kit.
