After 2 hours with a brush and CLP it still looks like shit.
>>
>>29256682
I'm still in this thread, try vinegar already you piece of shit.
>>
>>29256682
Use flitz
>>
CLP is worthless. Get a can of WD40 and some steel wool from home depot or lowes and go to town.

wow

why isn't this common knowledge? that's fucking great

Brake fluid. See: http://www.frfrogspad.com/homemade.htm#Removal

Lots of other good tips for firearms cleaning on there too.

Vinegar will removing the blueing too. I know most of it's gone already, but I don't want to remove the little that's left either.
>>
>>29256325
How'd it get like that?

Did you just find one laying on the ground somewhere innawoods?
>>
>>29256325
I was the guy with the SVT in the other thread. What kind of brush are you doing? a copper brush would do the job, else its not effective enough.

Also vinegar will strip any remaining bluing even though its effective against rust. depending on how much bluings left it could be a good way to go.
>>
>>29256739
Hmmm, check this
>>29256818

Before you have to go re-blue your gats.

Auction. It was $300 + $140 for parts needed to make it complete.

>>29256818
A copper brush is what I was using. After looking to see how much blueing was left, it looks like maybe 90%+ is already gone. I'm now considering going with white Vinegar.

>>29256952
Yea I guess it's not so light.
>>
>>29257022
You owe the gun to try some 0000 steel wool on a rusty area before you completely strip it,

the front handguards and a lot of the parts have some good aged look to it. If you use vinegar it will all have a dull grey to it with no signs of age.

In the end i would rather spend extra time and preserve some of its history then go the fast route and get an anonymous gun.
>>
>>29256892

with rust like that you'll want to get it redone anyway
>>

front heatshield*

Electrolysis is pretty much the easiest and best method to remove rust from smaller parts.
>>
>>29257102
p.s. you can use an old 12v wall wart style dc inverter instead of a battery charger if you don't have one.
>>
>>29257061
So for the past hour I've been scrubbing with 0000 steel wool on a few pieces, and on the inside of the bolt carrier, it really helped, but on things like the trigger assembly and inside the receiver it really didn't do anything. I just can't get into the nooks and crannies with it.
>>
>>29257102
Don't do this. It will remove the bluing as well as the rust.

Maybe only do it with the parts in white like the bolt and carrier
>>
>>29257507
Well it is the outside parts that house the aesthetics of the gun.

Also it is really easy to dissassemble the trigger assembly, Do that and you can dump the parts in vinegar or something. Then spend extra time with steel wool on the trigger guard and the external stuff. Thats what i would do at least.

I went with the vinegar on one of my really beat up older rifles that had some mismatched part. but i kinda think i killed some of its history when i removed the last parts of the original finish.

Yea, I thought about that, but what about the inside of the receiver, like the rails, among several other places I can't get to with steel wool?
>>
Small pieces of abrasive pads like brillo could be rubbed in them with some kind of bronze/copper piece pressing them in. I can only rely on the imagination on this kind of stuff. You dont need to be finished with this overnight. Make it a weekly project and spend your time doin it right with one piece at a time. itll be really satisfying in the end.

Excluding the heat shields, The thing is, is that I'm estimating 95% of the finish on all the metal parts is already gone. I'm thinking at this point it might be better to just take it to a gunsmith and let him professionally clean it, reblue it, and inspect it. I hate to do it, but at this point it just seems like the right thing to do considering most of the finish is gone anyways.

Well I just called every gun shop in my area, and no one does blueing.
>>
Get citric acid powder (CAP). One cup to a gallon of hot water, soak overnight. The rust will wash right off. Shouldn't fuck up blueing since it just reacts with the rust.
>>
>>29257548
No it won't... That's why it's commonly used to remove rust from firearm parts...
