The US built over fifty thousand ships during WWII, even though most were cargo ships and not warships. But I was curious - that's enough ships so that you can line them up end to end to form a bridge.

Why didn't we just form a bridge out of aircraft carriers between the US and Japan during WWII to start a land invasion, instead of planning out this gigantic amphibious assault plan? This way you could literally drive the tank from the factory across the aircraft carrier bridge and into the battle, and you could even move the bridge to change your landing point. We could have just streamed tanks and armor onto Okinawa, and then moved the bridge over to Japan to pour tanks into the Japanese home islands.

>Why didn't we slowly build a single route of access that's easily destroyed and will be known far before it reaches land, funneling our troops into a single thin choke the Japanese will know about months in advance.

Seems like a great plan to me.
>>
>>29231285

if it came under attack all they'd have to do is uncouple for a bit and you'd have hundreds of aircraft carriers ready to defend the bridge and deploy fighters
>>
The last time someone built a bridge using ships, I think they flogged the ocean for disobedience.

Persian king invading Greece.

Getting off OPs lunatic but amusing topic.

If we didn't have to worry about logistics, is it possible to build 50,000 battleships and would they require noticeably more resources in comparison to like very large transport ships and by how much more?

Like would battleships be cheaper in bulj and with plentiful steel?

Invading mainland Japan with ground forces would have killed countless civilians and soldiers.

Japanese people to this day would be an endangered race, killing a Jap would be like killing a bald eagle.

The two nukes were more humane and saved lives.

To this day, if an American soldier gets wounded in war he gets a purple heart minted in anticipation of the casualties we would receive invading Japan.

The Japanese army was preparing civilians to fight to the man, and preparing the women were preparing to kill their children and then kill themselves to avoid the dishonor of being captured.

They were being told that we would kill the men anyways, rape the women, and enslave the children.

A sub could come along, fire literally dozens of torpedoes, and get dozens of ships sunk in a matter of seconds. Then it could do it again while the ships tried to get moving which, incidentally, is slow as fucking shit.
>>
>>29231256
hahaha you know . . . .

by 1945 japan was probably the only point in time and space in which this stupid fucking idea could actually be made to work
>>
>>29231285
But why would the japanese want to destroy the carriers when they could capture them and have their tanks roll up on california?

How?

I just want to know if building 50k battleships would be possible and what measures would be needed to make it a reality.

Why build a bridge out of boats that are capable of just moving troops across the ocean themselves?

I don't know what this is, got a feeling I'll hate it.

Still seems less stupid than OP, proceed.

USS Iowa,, the biggest BB American ever built, Cost $100 million US. The EC2 Class "Liberty Ship" the most produced cargo ship of WW2(or ever, for that matter) cost $2 Million USD, so, you tell me.

Additionally, you can make a cargo ship that will make 18 knots and hopefully never get shot out of shitty steel with half trained workers, not so much with a Battleship, which is going to go fast, make hard turns and crash stops, generally abusing the structural hull and drive train and almost certainly be hit at least a few times with large calibre artillery, bombs and/or torpedoes/mines.

You've never watched Steins;Gate? It's pretty good and even has /g/s waifu in it.
>>
Why not form a bridge of marines linking all the islands and ultimately Japan itself?
>>
>>29231609
Because marines are trained to kill and they would just kill the water so everyone would die of thirst. That's why marines aren't allowed to swim in the Afghan ocean.
>>
>>29231578
Ah thanks.

....so we could build hundreds of battleships then.
>>
>>29231609
>1941
>100 million marines shipped up to the Aleutian Islands
>Marines given the order to crawl on each other to create a floating bridge to Japan
>6 months later, the bridge extends halfway across the Pacific, socialites and tourists pay thousands of dollars to walk on the Incredible Human Bridge to support our boys
>The resulting influx of money ends the Great Depression, Roosevelt loses election for third time and dies alone and unpopular due to his unpatriotic opposition to the bridge
>One month later, strong currents from the Pacific push the bridge north, tip of bridge crashes into the Japanese who were doing the same thing the whole time, crafty Japs
>Internment camps turned into concentration camps, any Jap inside could have been the informant that leaked info on Operation Retarded
>American and Japanese bridge soldiers link up and start beating each other while the soldiers walking on top of them trade fire on a bridge 3 feet wide
>>

In pure numeric terms yea, but in real terms no, ships of that size and weight require special facilities to build and service, they require crews numbering in the thousands vs a few dozen for a cargo ship they require able commanders to employ them effectively.
Furthermore there's no reason to, they were obsolete before WW2 even began, and most spent the war as either Glorified AA escort ships for the real Cap Ships, the Aircraft Carriers, or being used as massive, hideously inefficient mobile shore bombardment platforms, Or worse yet, in the case of many Japanese BBs run with a skeleton crew and pressed into service as troop transports and supply ships.

It actually worked for him. He crossed the Hellespont fine by using a bridge made of barges tied together.
