Not in Pennsylvania, I do gun law seminars for a living. Actually at one right now, someone always asks this. There is no duty to inform either. The police can radio in for more information but it's not common practice.

Im familiar with and generally abide by the "Dont talk to Cops" rule. But its not actually saying anything incriminating and Im not acting like Tyrone P Blackman high on crack. Its a simple ID that feels like common courtesy.
Every time Ive done it they ask me where it is and when I tell them they just ask me not to grab around there. ONE guy asked for me to put it on the passenger side dashboard, but then we had a nice talk about my SIG and he complimented my Led Zeppelin CDs.
LEOs know how often people with CHLs commit serious crimes, and they know that its far less than people who dont have one. Why not separate yourself from the riffraff.

The 2 times that I've been pulled over and notified police (not a duty to inform state), I was kindly escorted from my car, and my firearm removed. "For officer safety" . Both times, I just simply informed them that I am a licensed permit holder, and am currently carrying a firearm. They cleared it, and set it on the top of my car. Hell, one time, fucking cop swept me with my own gun.
