OP here I'm actually on 25ID BDE staff duty
I've done it in the past in the last ten years, mostly filling in during big leave (holidays, when most of the unit was out during an exercise, etc.). I'd just volunteer for it. If I do 24 hours or came in on the weekends my unit always gave me a day off. A couple of years ago I asked for two weeks of holiday leave instead of 3 weeks like the rest of the company so my CSM struck a deal with me that I'd do duty on a Saturday evening for 3 hours and then the next Sunday for 3 hours ( 2100 to 2400 and 2400 to 0300) and they gave me the whole third week off without using some of my leave days.
It's not so bad.

few years ago I didn't take xmass block leave. Every other day for two weeks I had staff duty at BN. last day oof block leave, a Sunday, I spent the whole night signing people back in. Best part was when some shitbird Spc called up and wanted me to sign him in over the telephone. Really motherfucker? I don't know where you are. You could be on the other side of Germany right now. And they even put it out that only officers and E7 and above can sign out/in for leave. Oh and I had to take like 3 Red Cross messages over those 3 weeks. Can't peoples grandparents die when it's a little more convenient?

I served so long ago, we never even heard of cell phones. We waited in long lines to pay a lot of money to call back to the United States.
So, one night, I was the duty NCO. I sent my runner up to the barracks. He yelled, "Ingram, Ingram, your mother called!"
