pretty good, definitely better than no gun. they have the power to stop someone and scare factor. most muggers and robbers and gang bangers arent going to wait to see if you have more than 2 shots if it got to the point where you actually had to shoot someone. not to mention comfort and concealability mean you will most likely never leave it at home. probably weighs less than your wallet

When the chambered bullet accounts for a significant percentage of the total weight, there is no recoil or gas operated mechanism for automatic loading, and the grips only allow a grip with a few fingers focusing the already present recoil, the recoil is going to be awful.
These are not guns I would want to shoot unless I had to.

Not that anon, but I've fired a 45LC single-barrel derringer and I can honestly say that it was the worst thing ever. Huge muzzle blast, and the recoil was actually moderately painful. Can't imagine a .410 would be considerably different. I'd stick with a subcompact 9mm if you absolutely need something you can stick in your pocket and actually drop someone with - at least then if you miss you're not blind, deaf and broken-wristed.
