A new platform isn't enough to make it a reality when your longest-ranged AAM is the AMRAAM. High value targets do not get into the MR-AAM envelope of an armed enemy fighter unless something has gone terribly wrong.

Why not develop a bolt-on first stage for air-to-air missiles carried on bombers? The added size wouldn't matter that much in a bomber, and it would be used to get the missile within its normal operating range from hundreds of miles away. Once it's in the ballpark the first stage drops away and the missile continues on as normal.
