The M4 basically did everything the XM8 did for a lot cheaper. Sure, it had more failures during testing but they were also using old, beat-to-shit STANAGs whereas the XM8 was using brand new HK magazines. Most failures the M4 suffered were magazine related.
I love the gun, but there was no way to justify buying it over the M4

Expensive af, marred with first-gen teething issues, H&K proprietary bullshit, and fundamentally offered no real and tangible improvements over what had been done over 40 (now 50) years of M16/M4 use and development.
In short, come back to Army procurement when you've significantly and fundamentally improved on the M4 or 5.56 round at a cost where it can be replaced country-wide and NATO-wide. Then, maybe, it will be considered.

The test comparing M4/XM8/etc didn't understand how the burst clutch works. If you shot 1 round in burst mode and let off the trigger, when you held it again, it'd fire 2 to complete the 3 round burst. They counted BOTH of those as a malfunction.
M4 wins, as usual.
