What's the best battle rifle option for less than a thousand dollars? It has occurred to me that that's an empty slot in my collection at the moment and I'd like to correct that.

I've been looking at the VEPR in 54r but the lack of reliable magazines larger than 5 rounds is a turnoff.

Sure do look nice though.

CMP Garand

Just don't fall for the PTR trap. Save a little more and get a decent FAL build.
>>
.308 veprs made to look like FAL are fucking sexy.

Sakuya put your trip back on.

Not op but are dsa fals worth the extra 150$ are they any good?
>>

My 54r Vepr is amazing. Works like a charm and feels so nice.

I've been considering making my own Vepr magazine but I don't have time to design it yet, let alone manufacture them.

1/3 of a SCAR 17s
>>
I really like that .308 vepr with factory fluted barrel it's pretty nice. Wish I picked one up before obama fucked up the imports.
>>
>>29081476
Why don't you post a picture?
>>
I've got four 10 round mags for my Vepr .54r. All work fine if I load them down one. Two of them work fine with 10, but I wouldn't trust my life on that.

I'm very happy with it because I've got thousands and thousands of rounds of .54r from years of Mosin collecting. With it drying up lately, you might want to look into a Vepr in .308 unless you're like me with a bunch on hand. They are very very good rifles.
>>
>>29081435
Nothing is wrong with the PTR.

Like nothing at all. Mines flawless and capable of moa accuracy
>>
>>29081428
>What's the best battle rifle option for less than a thousand dollars?
vepr, otherwise spend more than a grand
>>
>>29081428

I own a 54r vepr. Like you said, magazines are the biggest problem with the gun but otherwise the build quality is very good. Barrel is extremely thick and is built on an RPK receiver. If you get a POSP scope it feels like a poor man's dragunov. Also beats the MD assault weapon ban, despite the ak being banned twice by name, because it's a "hunting rifle". Fucking idiots.

I got an FAL for $500 and you can too.

Model 1917 (AKA P-17, AKA American Enfield.) Great rifle, great sights, classic look, smooth action, ammo easy to obtain and can be re-smithed into .308 if you *really* wanted to.

Not a battle rifle.

Not a battle rifle, and you ought to be ashamed of your bubba ass self.
Now go to a corner and die in a fire.

>>
>>29081428
Anything wrong with the .308 vepr? Seems like it would have better ammo availability.
>>
>>29086785
Ammo is markedly more expensive.
That's all.
>>
>>29086593
Yeah, you're a dumb shit. A battle rifle is a military issue small arm chambered in a full-power cartridge. But you know, that's fine. I realize that it's the weekend so day/k/are doesn't end at 7pm like normal.
>>
>>29086883
The modern and most accepted definition of the term also includes semiautomatic or select fire.

Take your autism somewhere else.
>>
>>29086883
Self loading. It must be semi or full auto.
For instance a Garand is a battle rifle.
An enfield isn't. A Mosin isn't. A Kar-98k isn't. An FAL is. A G3 is. A Carcano of any form isn't.
The list goes on.
The pint is that it's a semi or fully automatic firearm chambered in a full power cartridge (30.06, 8mm Mauser, .308, 7.62x54r, etc)

you are aware there are even 20 round mags for the vper in x54r right?
>>
If you reload, go FAL. You can shut the gas off and find all your cases. Magazines are about 25 bucks a piece.

If you don't, go PTR based off magazine cost alone. The ergos on a PTR suck massive dong, but I understand the new ones with the paddle are better. If you're a big dude, you will find the front part of the stock smashing in your cheekbone. My PTR also had to go back for warranty because the sights would not adjust far enough to zero.

Accuracy was about even with both, but I like the sights on the PTR better. Scope mounting is way better on the FAL, and the trigger is much smoother.

I had the big 3 at one point, and the 2 i have left is the FAL and M1A (which is far superior to either).
>>
>>29089869
Which are always out of stock and have feeding issues. The ten rounders do too.

Hopefully someone more competent steps up and offers up some better magazines at some point.
>>
M77 is pretty cheap yugo ak based .308 for less than $500

You have to get creative with the magazines because the ones they come with don't even fucking work.
>>
>>29090551
There's a company that makes metal .308 vepr mags working on some mags for the x54r. I'm eagerly awaiting a release date, and pricing info, though I'm expecting anywhere from $45-65 each.
>>
>>29090667

Are you referring to CSSpecs? I've seen them mentioned before. If they would release the steel mags the 54r VEPR would be perfect. I've been looking for the last 6 months on their website and they haven't mentioned it at all.
>>
>>29090702
I am. They released a video, of them working to make tooling. Their goal was a 15 and I wanna say a 10. They wanted to go 20, but ran into some feeding issues with the design. I'm staying optimistic, since I've only got the 2 factory 5's for mine.
>>
>>29090709

Praise the Lord.

Where did you see the video? YouTube or their website?

This was as far as they have done so far. No word on any newer videos though.

I just got my hands on a VEPR 54r and I COULDN'T be more happier. I wanted a DMR, a rifle for 100-600 yards in a larger caliber that could get near to 1 MOA and the VEPR delivered even with cheap ass wolf steel ammo.

>PROS:
Cheaper than ever
Optics options are easy (Same as any AK)
Terrific caliber
Got JUST a hair over 1" at 100 yards with Wolf

>Cons:
Mags are expensive and hard to come by
Stock options are expensive, handguard options are limited
The caliber is terrific but being rimmed it leaves a lot of limitations

>PROTIPS:
Get a 20-23" rifle
Mount a bipod. I used and love the SGM tri-rail, it's light.
You can keep the wood forend if you switch out the front sling swivel with an uncle mikes
Don't change the stock unless you're willing to sink another 2-300 into a "cheaper" rifle
Get an RS Regulate or Midwest mount and mount a good optic to 12x mag minimum
15 and 20 round mags are in research stages for two companies
If you get the 10 rounders, they have a 50/50 shot of working right or not. If the SGM 10 rounder doesn't work, you can have it replaced for free, and they state as much online.

I got mine for $800, plus optic and mount and foreend I'm into the rifle at 1,100 without changing out the stock. So that puts me in the good costwise compared to AR10s and a lot of 308's on the market. I'm just using the 5 rounders and am waiting for the 15 round single stack steel mags.

Here's a pic of mine before I switched out the front end and the optic (50 yards, 4x optic, surplus ammo)

A friend of mine bought a PTR. It was light striking like a champion. Couldn't get a magazine through it. He called up PTR, sent the rifle back, they did work to it, sent it back to him, and now it runs flawlessly. Hell, we went to my backyard range and tried to fuck it up. Just mag dump after mag dump after mag dump.

Sucks he had to send it back but like I said, it has been flawless ever since.
>>
>>29090709
SGM Tactical mags have a bad follower design, some work 100% some work 20%. You can switch it out for free, but that's more hassle than I want to deal with. They are working on a 20 round double stack mag and claim to be making it more reliable. The nature of the mag though would make it very unrealistic.

CSS is making a 15 round mag and then scaling it down to 10 for prone-shooters. They will be all steel and so far they are working it on the cheap, a trial-and-error basis which means it may take some time and fine-tuning to get right but hopefully they will be 100% reliable, it seems to be their goal

This is all at least 3-6 months away, and I'm sticking with my 5 round mags until I hear about a rock-solid mag at 10+
>>
>>29090742

If you wanted a long-range rifle why didn't you get a 27 inch barrel?
>>
>>29091735
Barrel length does not mean more accuracy

Most of the time barrels are long just to add a greater distance between the rear and front sight
>>
>>29092637
For 54R though, the longer barrel length would allow the round to reach a higher velocity, wouldn't it? Unless 23 inches is enough. My friend has a 21" and it seems like there is a LOT of powder left to burn.
>>
M-305 or svt
>>
>>29093092

There was a student at the university of Florida who conducted a study of velocity and barrel length. He found that a 28 inch barrel has about 100 fps more than a 24 inch barrel, and 200 fps more than the 20 inch barrel. 8 inches of additional length just isn't worth it for the small increase in velocity, especially since the VEPR manual says that it's most effective within 300 meters. Past that and the groups start to open up. It's still an AK, doesn't have dragunov performance at long range. A 54r round pushing 2600 fps is still plenty and is way more maneuverable than a 27 inch musket.

The NTR91 is the thinking man's battle rifle.
>>
Too bad that 54r is drying up, so mags or no, you're going to have to pay a hefty price to have fun with a Vepr again.
>>
>>29093592

Eh 50 cents per cartridge isn't too bad for a full power round. It also has widespread commercial manufacturing with multiple ammo types available so I think we'll be OK. Much better than say 8mm Mauser or 303 British. It's nice to shoot a military cartridge that is still in current use. It tends to make supply fairly stable.
>>
>>29093387
Except that's not a PTR, and we keep telling you this every thread
>>
>>29093665
I suppose, but now I'm considering getting an x39 AK (or hell, maybe even an AR15) so I can still enjoy my time with rifles. I've only got .22 and x54r rifles right now, and one tends to be lackluster while the other is now too expensive for plinking.
>>
>>29083495

K-var indicated they were still getting VEPR rifles and shotguns at shot show. They said they're supposed to be getting increased numbers of the comblock calibers.
>>
>>29093754
FIME's going to be importing them too now, right?
>>
>>29093751

I hear you man. I would definitely recommend a rifle in an intermediate cartridge in your situation. I've always found my AR to be boring but extremely capable for predator hunting and target shooting. My SKS is hella fun but groups wider at 100 yards. It has just the right amount of recoil. I live in MD so I've never shot or owned a x39 AK.
>>
>>29093336

Awesome. Thanks for the info. Wasn't tryna be a dick, just curious.

The People's Republic of Maryland. I'm pretty sure even Commiefornians can buy AK rifles with bullet buttons. I hate it so much and strongly considering moving for that reason alone. Can't wait to have my rights reinstated.
