The problem comes from the "This will never happen to me" mentality.
People who don't carry or are against carrying or guns in general tend to surround themselves with like-minded people who construct a societal bubble in which they cannot see out. They may be great people, their friends may be great people, they don't want to hurt anyone and live in an idealistic fantasy world that they have created in their minds and tend to think of others as being included in this world. They don't think that this type of thing could happen to them, they would never do it to anyone so why would anyone else do it to them? It's a fictitious mental reality. Sure, who doesn't wish that the world could be free of this kind of shit. But wanting and wishing doesn't make it so. There are terrible people out there who wish to do terrible things.
That said, the guy at the ATM had terrible situational awareness and after being grabbed with a gun to his head, having a concealed carry gun would be of little good. Had the driver of the car who ended up getting shot been carrying, maybe things would be different. Then again, maybe she shoots the guy she sees with a gun and the guy on the motorcycle still shoots her anyway.
It's an ugly world. Enough of that, I'm going to go post on tumblr, facebook, and twitter to have my idealist dreams rationalized and perpetuated as reality by other like minded individuals because this could never happen to me.

My college roommate's friend from high school just got killed. He was working at a pizza place and some dindu came in to rob the place. He completely complied with the robber; did everything he asked and gave him all the money. Yet, he still shot him multiple times.
