For close range, XM193 works just fine. If you don't trust it for whatever reason, then Mk 262/its clones work perfectly fine too.
Just don't get varmint rounds- you'll blow a bunch of little craters, not pierce holes.

Mk. 262 is utterly wasted at home defense range, unless you are defending your home from like 400 yards with a carbine.
It's a round designed to extend effective range, not be more effective point-blank. Inside 20 feet you might as well use XM193, literally everything you shoot will be devastating.

This is true. The *best* choice for defensive ammunition would be something that performs well against common barriers, minimized over-penetration, and maximizes expansion. There are some great rounds out there that do this, but Mk. 262 isn't one of them.

You can find a decent compromise between the two.
Monolithic-copper hollowpoints (the non-tipped ones like the original TSX or Tac-X) don't really deflect, have decent barrier penetration, and are still devastating in tissue. They've got the same expansion diameter as the tipped versions (TTSX, Tac-TX, Hornady GMX) but take an extra inch to get to full diameter.
