I almost joined the Irish Army. I was a dual citizen (Irish mum, American dad). What kept me from joining was also the most impressive thing about the Irish forces: you have to get a letter of recommendation from three different "persons of substance", and one has to be your parish priest.
Since I was never in Ireland longer than a few weeks at a time, I never got to develop the relationships one would need to get those recommendations. I ultimately renounced my Irish citizenship so I could enlist in the American army. I couldn't serve in any operator-type unit because I can't ever get a TS-SCI, being foreign-born and having been a dual citizen as an adult. But I got to be a grunt and that's OK.

When they were first deployed, they were kicked out of theater for basically fucking around and pissing off SOCOM. They've come a long way since then, but the main issue is that, unlike the other SOF units, they don't have a really clear mission set. Unconventional warfare? You have the Green Berets. Maritime ops? Navy SEALs. And pretty much everyone and their mother engages in DA these days so for MARSOC to also jump on that bandwagon... it really raises the question of what do we NEED MARSOC for?
Plus /k/ has a huge hate-boner for Marines and SEALs. Part of it is justified (i.e. all the show-boating SEALs who write books/get movie deals) but I do think /k/ takes it to an extreme.
