I'm looking for a lightweight, reliable bolt action .308

Any recommendations?
>>
You can never go wrong with a brand new Remington 770.
>>
Remington 700.
>>
A general budget would probably help.

I hear many good things about the Howa 1500/Weatherby Vanguard series, and have been planning on picking one up at some point. It's reliable, light, and cheap.

Well if budget is not a concern consider a Kimber Montana, going down in price from there maybe a Tikka T3 lite/superlite.

CZ 550 FS

Mine was in 30-06 and not .308 and it was still a super light rifle, almost to the point where shooting was kind of unpleasant, but it was really wonderful lugging it around while hunting because I often forgot I had it over my shoulder due to how light it was.

The only reason why I wanted the 550FS is because I have a 452 Ultra Lux that I love. I'm not too big on CZ's handguns but I love their rifles. If I didn't already have another 30-06 that I preferred to the 550FS I would have kept the 550FS but I didn't really need or want two.

My Mossberg MVP has been treating me pretty well. I'm yet to really bolt it down and handload shit to see what kinda accuracy I can squeeze out of it, but it feeds real great from all kinds of mags and extracts well. Would buy again.

The ability to use pretty much any of the usual 7.62X51 mags is nice, and the fit and finish was good quality too.
It's a heavy motherfucker but I can shoot mag after mag without getting a sore shoulder or exceptionaly wider groups.

These are fucking garbage, look up videos on them to see how shit they are

Best bang for buck is the Savage Axis, step it up a bit to the Howa 1500/Weatherby vanguard, step that up a bit again to the lovely tikka T3

Nothing if it is an old one.
Everything if it is one of the shitty new ones.
Remingtons quality has been shit for quite a while now. This should be common knowledge by now.

Obvious satire.
>>
If I want a first hunting bolt-action rifle, should I go for a Savage Axis/Axis II, and in what caliber?
>>
>>28917756

>>

Howa 1500 or weatherby vanguard is better and shouldnt be much more.

Tikka T3

You're aware it's like 7.3lbs right? That it's literally 3lbs heavier than a truly light .308 and still 2lbs heavier than a "standard" deer blaster, right?
>>
I have a Savage 11 trophy hunter xp. Retarded name but its a savage 11 and its nice. Also cheap and light.

I went with the youth version because the barrel is 20" as opposed to 22", it comes with a coupon to get the adult sized stock if you want it but the youth stock is almost the same size.
>>

cz make good rifles. Ruger does too, their m44 hawkeyes are good too. Savage 11 or 12.

save the 1700 dollars and buy ammo instead

>>28908957

How much are you looking to spend? Tikka's are pretty light.
>>

You're aware that it's actually 6.2 pounds, and we're all now aware that you don't know what you're talking about from this point on.
>>
>>28920088
My budget for the whole shebang (storage, accessories, optics, ammo/reloading kit etc.) is $7,500.

Can you recommend anything similar with the budget in mind?

I want to stick with .308 and a bolt action rifle.

>>
>>28920133
I own a Tikka T3 Lite in 30-06 but held the .308 theyre both really great. They have more of an European bolt though instead of American, what I mean by that is if you're hiking around the bush and you tend to hit your bolt with your leg or anything it can open, but with a round in the chamber the saftey also locks the action. Browning or Sako will literally last your family generations so you cant go wrong with one of those either. Brownings are a little bit heavier but they're really nice. I'd recomend a 10gun safe to start with aswell, and as for reloading you can get a good start with 3 presses and powder loader along with a media tumbler. That would probably put you around 3000, and vortex has really nice optics with a awesome lifetime warrenty.
>>
>>28920133
Also, why .308?

Well the bigger question is what kind of bolt face do you want? Do you want controlled round feed or push feed?
>>
>>28920219
Seems like a nice compromise of ballistics, ammo availability and reload equipment availability.

I will be paper punching of the most part, but eventually joining my uncle in farm patrols and vermin/pest control (foxes, rabbits, goat, deer, kangaroos and emu)
>>
>>28920243
Makes sense, if you do decide you want something bigger/better you can always fo 25-06 but the ammo will be slightly more expensive. But 25-06 will put a .308 to shame. .308 and 30-06 are on the same field for targets at 300M with the 30-06 dropping a little more but careies more force.
>>
>>28913796
Mossberg rifles are shit, dont even bother trying to defend them.
>>
>>28920189
I was thinking Nightforce for the optics too by the way. Seems like a brand that I can't go wrong with.
>>
>>28918385
get a tikka instead.

you'd be better off buying an F35 fighter jet. Its got much more firepower, able to maintain air superiority and you can brag to all you friends about your advanced, affordable fighter. its only about 100 mil more than that shitty bolt-action shit
>>
>>28920133
PT&G action, barrel from whomever you want, either a fiberglass stock or a chassis system, and a 3-15 power scope. In terms of reloading you will spend 1-2k to start out depending on how much you want to budget for it.
>>
>>28920308
Never heard of them but if theyre good quality with a good warrenty you cant really go wrong
>>
>>28920369
Personally I recommend buying a used Steiner scope as the warranty is lifetime and transferred to whom ever owns the scope not just the first buyer.
>>
>>28920429
Thatd be pretty good too, just not sure on prices, I bought a vortex 4-12x 30mm for 220 and ive seem them cheaper, but there are better options like this anon says if youre not trying to chump out.
>>
>>28920369
Leupold is another brand I was interested in, but I would be going over slightly my budget for a decent scope from them.

>>28920344
I want to stick with a bigger manufacturer with a complete system for my first rifle, nothing too complex for now.
>>
>>28920338

>>
>>28920452
The only advice on scopes is take your time, see how much more crisp they are from eachother.
>>
>>28920451
I got a 5-25x56 with a MSR reticle for 1900 shipped to my door from someone on the snipershide, it works very well.

>>28920452
Leupold is shit.

PT&G makes great actions and bolts, you just need to find a gunsmith to barrel it and you can put whatever trigger you want on it. It would be cheaper than other folks whom make complete rifles as well as more accurate.

For that magnification range try to stick to first focal plane optics as they will be more effective and easier to use over second focal plane choices.
>>
>>28920488
>Originally designed for the US military
I dont know, I tend to keep away from that kind of stuff. Just make sure you can hold it or return it and scope things out with it.
>>
>>28920369
>never heard of NightForce

They're the sole supplier of magnified optics to Navy SEAL teams.

It's actually a few hundred dollarydoos cheaper here in Straya, strange considering everything else here is about 25~50% more expensive.
>>
>>28920553

This meme needs to die, the military only gets the cheapest option that meets the minimum requirements, it isnt a good measurement metric for quality.
