The Tornado ADV is the equal of the F-15C and is as capable in every single respect. It is inconceivable that the RAF could have gone so long without an aircraft equal to either the F-15 of F-16.

The only plane it needed to fight was this. It doesn't need to be particularly capable. It certainly didn't need variable geometry wings.
>>
The US has always been a generation ahead in terms of aircraft design since the late 1950s, at least a decade ahead.

The F-4 remained competitive with the MiG-23 and Tornado, the F-15 with the Gripen, the F-15 with the Flanker and Typhoon, the F-18 with the Rafale, etc.
>>
>>28905353
The F-15C wasn't a long-range interceptor.

The USA didn't have a real counterpart to the Tornado ADV.
>>
The only good thing about the F-35 is that it means every country worth a damn has the same plane and stops all the "whose plane is the best" threads on /k/.
>>
It's quite interesting that the standard fighter-bomber version of the Tornado was a better machine for dogfighting than the ADV version.

The ADV was really that fast interceptor with powerful radar.

Uh, the ADV was replaced five years ago.

The HAL Tejas is the equal of the PAC JF-17 "Thunder" and is as capable in every single respect. It is inconceivable that the IAF could have gone so long without an aircraft equal to either the JF-17 or J-7.

F-15 was also way too expensive for the RAF, while the Tornado was a domestic produced aircraft which did exactly what the RAF wanted.

India stays ahead of the competition with its first 5th-generation light fighter. Truly the "overgrown MiG-21" JF-17 (more like Junior Fighter amiright?) is humbled by mighty Bharat and her advanced aerospace industries
>>
>>28905480
That looks like it'd probably have the edge over a Mirage III or F-100.

All they need to do now is build a time machine.
>>
India is really that little child that talks how great it is but in reality they are pretty shitty in everything.

The F-15 was not an alternative because America only sold and shipped them without the full avionics and the exported aircraft woult get the real software in war/when America thinks it's time.

Concept picture of an early concept for a fighter version of the Tornado.

But people realized very fast that a swept-wing design doesn't make a great fighter.
>>

The rearwards visibility is also shitpoor
>>
>>28905353
The tornado couldn't shoot down a modernized MiG-29 much less an F-15
>>
>>28905529
The Luftwaffe was quite interesting to get some F-18 aircraft as replacement for the F-4.
In fact within Germany the F-18 was the more preferable option than the Eurofighter until some politics happened.

So in an alternative world Germany would have replaced their F-4 with F-18 and would maybe now think about getting some F-35.

They'd be a regional superpower if it wasn't for China counterbalancing their influence in the region

I stumbled upon it while reading cold war history, their 1971 war with Pakistan is a good thing to read about

I think it was started by them because the Pakis were genociding Hindus in East Pakistan
>>
>>28905570
Well, for Europe it sucked that the Cold War ended 10 years too early.

So many great things were in developement for the 90s, which got delayed or canceled because there was no money left.

Why did Germany and the UK never adopt a F-16 equivalent light fighter, whereas France, Sweden and others did?

It's quite interesting how small the Tornado and Eurofighter are compared to the Russian stuff.
>>
>>28905835
Typhoon is too heavy, F-16 is more in the class of Mirage 2000 and Gripen
>>
>>28905872
Not the first variations. Also it is very small. Much smaller ther than heavy fighters like the F-15, Flanker and F-22. Weight probably comes down to the two engines.

the MiG 29 is roughly comparable to a F-16 in size.

1. Su 11's are extremely rare
2. they don't have the wing fence the MiG 21 and the picture has
3. the fuselage behind the intake tapers on a MiG 21 and in the picture, while it doesn't for a Su 11

It's called future proofing.

If you design an aircraft with extra space in it, it means if you get a decent upgrade, it will be easier to fit in the larger aircraft without having to compromise the original body or structure.

Look at the Eurofighter and all the odds and ends it has sticking out of it now. It used to look sleek but it's got stupid bumps and curves caused by post production upgrades.

God forbid what the CAS upgrade will look like.
>>
The Tornado is such a fucking cool looking aircraft.

It's also crazy how fucking fast it is at sea level.

Like what? Typhoon was always supposed to have PIRATE and Praetorean/DASS

The only reason they didn't have them on the initial airframes was cost.

The only new bump on the Tranche 3 airframes are these mounts for fitting CFTs in future

>>
>>28907413
They are pretty locked in. They dramatically improve life for the aircraft, and are a non moving, lightweight part.
