For those of you who have radios,
In a SHTF scenario, the power will probably go out. How do you plan on keeping the radio charged? I ask because I'm weighing the options of getting a radio. I don't really see the point in having one if I can't charge it.
A generator is out of the question for me because I don't want to draw attention to my house while everyone else is without power.
>>
>>28896369
Car charger

They also make hookups so you can run your home using your car as your generator.

500$ or so but its digital.
>>
>>28896369
Well that's one of the nice things about the Baofeng. You have the standard battery, the extended which I've read can last a week just monitoring, that also has a DC port on the side. It can be charged by a 12V cigarette lighter or a small solar cell or dynamo. Or there also the BL-5 battery pack that houses several "AA" batteries.

http://www.amazon.com/BaoFeng-BL-5-AA-Battery-BF-F8HP/dp/B00LAPTWE4

This is one of the reasons the UV-5R is so popular, low price and the variety of accessories.

>>

I think you're good to go, unless I missed something. Someone may or may not be on that frequency, you can call out like "Douchenozzle 1 listening" and see if you get a response. Without a license you're allowed to transmit and receive on the MURS frequencies and FRS and GMRS (techincally). You can hit scan and just listen if there's anyone talking one any of the channels, just be sure if you answer back it is on one of the above frequencies because if not the Hamfudds will come out of the woodwork jumping on your ass for not having a license.
>>
>>28896636
Currently scanning I heard you can get NOAA on this. Also would it be possible to monitor air traffic feq? I fly and I like to listen in on the radio chatter of people flying in and out on out home port . that and is there a way to monitor FD/PD radio locally? If so where would I get these?

Also, take the time to read the manual you can get this lil sucker to do all kinds of shit.
>>
>>28896699
Read the little manual that came with it it basically just tells me how to navigation works and that's about it . I'm online currently looking for local channals to monitor but nothing is popping up.

http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/

Here you go just follow the map to wear you want to listen to and at the end it has a list for just about everything you can listen to. As long as you're in range you should be able to pick it up. If you're not, then try this.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KC4PWQQ?psc=1

I've been told it is the best antenna upgrade for the UV-5R.
>>
>>28896737
If that ap doesn't work for you just post what state county and airfield you're looking for and I'll find you the tower frequency if it is available.
>>
>>28896317
Can someone explain that list to me? Im new to the radio and just got one in myself. I heard you can talk on them but then i hear its illegal to do so. I also heard you can talk on once channel but others may hear it on different chennels and get annoyed?
>>
>>28896743
Awesome thank you sir . I also have that antenna in my cart currently. Is there a way to get o e for my vehicle that jacks Into this and boosts my sending range? I go off roading alot and I usually just text when service is there
>>
>>28896761
BWI
>>
>>28896828

The list is just a quick reference guide to the most popular frequencies. Like the MURS "channels" which are from 151.8200 to 154.60 Mhz are the most popular for kommandos to use innawoods. Because these are essentially unlicensed free to use frequencies. FRS/ GMRS channels have their own frequency range, etc, etc. The only thing that makes them a channel is someone said, "this frequency is this channel".

You shouldn't have an issue with your signaling bleeding into another frequency, I believe that was address a few years ago in the UV-5R. Some anon the other day had a nice little write up about it, I should've saved it, sorry.

Here you go:
http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?aid=1113

You can also try this site:
http://www.liveatc.net/search/?icao=bwi

>>28896880
You can put an antenna on your car that would hook to the UV-5R but there's not really a way to boost your signal strength. It will increase what you can pick up, but not your outgoing signal. Most of you "handytalkies", like the UV-5R are around 5W output, the new Baofeng BF-F8HP puts out 8W but I read it gets pretty hot and sucks the battery drier than a Thai hooker on an expat dick.

To get a stronger signal out you'll have to move up in equipment to a mobile unit like this:
https://baofengtech.com/uv-5001
50W out, you can even set it up so this so it acts as a repeater. So your walking innawoods, it'll be 5 watts to the car, then out from the mobile unit at 50 watts, but I don't know how to do it yet, I got a guy for that.
>>
>>28896902
Thank you so much. I plan on using it mostly to listen to but if i have the ability to use it to chat on camping trips that's always a bonus. Are the MURS "channels" populated? Or is it easy to find one to chat with a buddy without bothering others?
>>
>>28897014
You'll be able to find an unpopulated one pretty easy I think. They're mostly used by kommandos and Bundy's bunch and construction sites and some businesses, paintball fields, etc. But considering the limited range of handhelds you'll be out of reach of their signal in just a few miles.

falcon III, motorola XTS series such as the XTS5000, anything by Yaesu.
>>
>>28897298
And who do we need to be taken seriously by? Like c'mon, its a fucking radio most of us will use in an emergency or dicking around in the woods. I highly doubt most of us want to get in front of a CNN camera going on about "duh gubmint" if that's what you're implying.

>2016
>in a DHS situation room all eyes are on a monitor of a live feed from CNN
>"Ahm tellin' ya them pinko commie muslim baby killin lesbians ain't takin' muh gunz"

>they see it, a sign of their impending doom
>their plot for world domination and the end of Nascar ruined

>it read, 'iCom'
>and it was game over.......
>>
I have one of these things. Unless you live in some really shitty town or city all the police/fire/ems have switched to digital. Those radios cost $300. All this will pick up is weather radio and old men HAM operators. You get in trouble if you transmit on HAM with out a license. I think it was a total waste of money unless someone knows anything else this POS does.
>>
>>28897401
>Falcon III

Oh for fucks sake.
>>
Uniden BCD396XT or something with the same capabilities is about the only useful scanner out there. These Baofengs can barely do anything now, can't pick up police, can only talk to fudd ham radio, not even supposed to do that without some permit. It's junk.
>>
>>28897505
Pft, if your radio doesn't use quantum entanglement derived communication, it's just not worth it.
>>
Might be a dumb question, but how reliable are the airshit PTT and throat mics? They're more affordable than milspec and the kiddies use them, but are they just chinkshit that breaks down after a weekend of rub'n'tug?
>>
>>28897465
bullshit. only the narco/vice squad in my 1/4mil pop cali town uses digital.

you really think every town has the cash to waste on upgrading all their police/fire/emt personnel to digital so the small percent of hamfags won't monitor all those really important calls about family disturbances?
>>
>>28897831
That depends on what you're doing. Are you operating or doing airshit?
>>
>Was issued some cool gear at work
>Forgot to take pics
>Now I am on a 4 day leave and cannot provide radio porn

We got issued new CBRN rated SCBA masks and our frames were updated as well. Our new masks have a microphone and voice amplifier in the nose cup under the HUD. It tethers into the PASS device and can has a hookup on the back of the frame. We can tie our radios into the frame or inside our gear (Everything from bunker gear to various hazmat PPE). We can either key up on the radio, on the shoulder PASS device or set the channel open and just speak up to actuate the mic.

Pretty geeky but cool as fuck shit.

>>
>>28897897
Eh, when it's funded with tax money, you'd better believe they would. In any case, this Baofeng radio will not pick up the majority of police, fire, and other emergency frequencies now in common use in the US.

I have a question. Is there any kind of adapter for the U229 5 pin connector (pic related) that I can hook up to a a typical boefang or motorola radio? thats not insane amounts of money. I am tempted to do it myself but have yet to come across any kind of tutorial.

I have a tactical headset, same use/looks as Sordins or Comtacs, but its designed with the other wierd connector, that goes into Jbox's and crewstation headset control box's in military vehicles, of which I have had extreme diffuculty trying to find any kind of connector for.

This is more related to what I got, mines a little bit more modern, I think its more for Stryker crewmen and mounted infantry types.

I am beginning to think I am going to be forced into buying a set comtacs or some other headset that seems to use that 15mm jack or whatever it is.
>>
>>28898578

Most likely you will have to do this yourself. If you do end up doing it keep in mind that the microphone in your headset may not be an electret microphone, it might be a condensor.
>>
Ok so I have pretty much listened to most of the shit around me. What now? Also what's a decent head set to jack this into that can also filter gun shots and su h but still listen to my surroundings?

I went with a shoulder mic that has a 3.5mm audio out, and ran that into the aux input of my Howard Leight earpro. That way I can hit the PTT button on the shoulder mic and talk, and then discreetly hear the response. You could also accomplish something similar with a 2.5mm-male-to-3.5mm-female pigtail adapter, and plug that directly into the audio out jack on the radio, and use the radio itself for its microphone.
>>
>>28900495
pretty much exactly what I'm setting up, just waiting on the push button mic to come in, I have everything else.

Does it get hung/tangled on every goddamn thing like that?

Ok so I set up my radio and I tuned into the NOAA feq it receives fine how do I test if I'm sending? Also I can't hear anything around me all PD FD and other little local Chan/feq are static is this an issue on my end? I took the radio with me into town and I couldn't hear the dispatch or anything on scan.
>>
>>28902979
For about a decade or so now most police and fire radios been digital apco 25 crap. Like an anon above said, you'll require a special scanner to receive these transmissions. Some localities still have their old frequencies in the 155MHz range and either simulcast all their digital traffic over it or straight up still use it full time. These have become more and more rare every year.

Sorry for the bad news, these $30 radios can't do it all. For that there's sdr, but that's a different monster entirely. The good news is the fast food drive thru, malls, Wally worlds, etc should all be within your tx/rx frequency range. Many of the frequencies can be found by searching for a businesses' address in the FCC ULS. Go sit in a taco bell parking lot and have a good giggle, just don't get out of hand

>>
>>28905026
Using the ionnosphere is much easier than a satilite or moon. It can be done consistently with the right equipment and even CBers are familiar with the phenomenon, they call it "skip". The real term is "sky-wave propagation".
