It started back in Vietnam, when human wave attacks would come in at 30 attackers per wave.
The GI's would be outnumbered due to their 20rd magazines, and many would get killed while reloading.
The US Army decided to modify the 20rd'ers to 30rds to mitigate deaths during Vietnamese human wave attacks.
Ever since then, 30rds has been standard.

Let's say you want to blow off some steam at the range by shooting a full 30-round magazine. By selling boxes of 20, you need to buy 2 boxes, but then you're left with 10 spare rounds.
But now you have an half emptied open box of ammo that you isn't adequate for going to the range the next time, but still takes up space in your home.
So that OCD part (just like putting the volume in increments of 5, getting mad when a manhole cover doesn't align properly) in all of us tells us to buy another box of ammo, so that you either don't have to stop by the shop the next range trip or to treat yourself on firing some extra rounds.
Same with higher amounts, 7 magazines = 210 rounds, at 20 rounds/box you need to buy 11 boxes (220 rounds), but you're left with 10 extra rounds, so you might as well spend that little bit extra and get another box to get 240 rounds (or 8 magazines). Hell in higher quantities it's actually even easier to buy that extra box, you're already spending quite a bit, so why not add that tiny little bit more.

I might have fucked up the first part of my reasoning with the low amounts. But my point still stands about the higher amounts.
If you buy 20 boxes adding one extra doesn't seem that big of a deal, but for the company that's still 10 bucks extra they make (and if you can sell a lot of those one-extra boxes that turns into a nice little profit).

30 is a nice balance between size, capacity, and reliability. Plus the immense momentum of support systems keeps 30 the typical capacity for military rifles shooting an intermediate cartridge. 40 gets a bit long and may interfere with shooting prone, may not fit some magazine pouches. More than 30 may also adversely affect reliability for standard box style magazines where geometry based on cartridge requirements, spring rates, and the ability of the follow to reliably move through the magazine are all important factors.
While there are certainly reliable as well as compact box magazines (surefire 60 round), the systems behind supporting 30 round magazines such as pouches, suppliers, machine tools to make said magazines, etc. etc. are so entrenched that it would take an apparent, dire, immediate need for larger than 30 round magazines to be produced as the new standard.

Because if you have a rifle that uses detachable 30-round magazines you should have at least two magazines for there to be any point in them being detachable, hence buying three boxes of ammo for 60 rounds. And it magically also works for three 20-round magazines too, for some wierd math related reason like 1:1 ratios or something.

My logic is that most m16s were 3 shot burst and a 20 round mag would get 6 pulls of the trigger with 3 shots and the 7th pull would be 2. So they put 10 more rounds to make things easier so you can get a clean even 10 pulls. Not 21 , 24 , 27, cause that makes inventory a fuck ton more difficult.
