What can you guys tell me about bayonets?
I had a fucklong argument with some British guy, who insisted that bayonet charges are still commonly done, extremely effective (even vs. disciplined opponents, not only against sandkips), and that not only British do them, but other people too - French in Mali, Austrians, and US Marines even.
Despite my best attempts, I can't find any examples of modern bayonet charges, beyond the few the Brits did in the sandbox. And it doesn't really make any sense to me either - I mean, I suppose it would be simpler to just simply shoot the enemy than to attempt to close in for a stab, and if the enemy is too close to shoot, I'd suppose the bayonet, making the rifle longer, would also have trouble being utilized.
So, am I just being a mongoloid, or are bayonet charges an outdated tactic?

I have been deployed all over Afghanistan and to several areas in Iraq, not to mention Saudi, Kuwait, Haiti, Bosnia, and panama...I have never seen anyone affix their bayonet while in combat, let alone actually stab someone with it.
Maybe "bayonet charges" in the sense of "getting closer to the enemy and shooting them while you just so happen to have your bayonet fixed."

The bayonet increases your killing power
Bayonets are mostly for utility knife and intimidation purposes these days. The only military members that regularly affix them are those in honor guard and shit and prison guards.

the USMC uses bayonet training more to instill an aggressive mindset than as actual combat training. That said, while I was in we inventoried everything in the armory once (down to fucking computer mouses) and my battalion had literally hundreds of pristine bayonets. When I deployed to Iraq, they didn't even issue us bayonets even thought we had them in our connex.
I think they were afraid we would stab each other.
Half way through the deployment they took all the pistols away from enlisted men too, because I think they were afraid we'd shoot ourselves with them after someone actually did in a different battalion.

This one was cheap, though. It's a Mauser bayonet manufactured for export as far as I can tell. No stamps or markings, though, so who knows where it ended up.
Picked it up (with scabbard like all my bayos) at an antique shop for $5 when I was about 12. I didn't get a Mauser rifle to match it until about 15 years later.

Not to be a douche, but that is a Type 30 bayonet...the Type 30, 38, & 99 all used the same style of bayonet. That being said, there are TONS of variations. I have a couple different versions for my Type 38 and Type 99 as well.

You have about the same reach as if you just used it like a normal knife when attached to a bullpup to use a bayonet to its fullest capacity it should be mounted on a long gun like in the attached pic.

They're not common but the last three recorded bayonet charges were all carried out by Scottish regiments in the British army, the last in Iraq and all by the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. In the last action they were surrounded, out of ammo and outnumbered and the charge was extremely effective and killed or drove off the enemy with no loss of life. The bayonet charge was developed by and for Scottish regiments of the British army so it is fitting.
There is no recorded instance of Americans doing it since Korea, or anyone else that I know of.
