There are two strategies I see working.
The Kennedy strategy, and the Nixon strategy. The LBJ strategy was the uncomfortable middle ground between the two.
Under Kennedy

Pump money into developing Special Forces in order to create a smaller, more specialised army to fight the NVA and Viet Cong with use of air strikes and helicopters to conduct infiltration missions and raids while simultaneously training the ARVN in counter insurgency tactics as well as using the CIA to smoke out the corruption within the ARVN. We did win it. The Vietcong and North Vietnamese government signed peace treaties at Versailles. One of the terms of that agreement was resupply to the south by the United States. The war was over then and there, but the new generation of democrat politicians got elected due to anti war sentiment and abandoned our agreement with the South Vietnamese.
Peace loving hippies caused over 1 million south vietnamese to end up in reeducation camps, and subjected South Vietnam to Communist dictatorship, not to mention wasting the sacrifice of 60 thousand Americans.

The US had an incredibly amount of restraint in that war. They had their hands tied politically the entire time. The way it ended was probably the best outcome politically.

Russia had a goal of only controlling a few regions in Afghanistan. They kept enough to protect their road systems and Kabul. Those regions had around 2.5 million people in it. 1.5 were killed by the Soviets and they still lost.
