As a machinist I can enjoy the work that was put into it. But I've seen more impressive work put into things. I have a coworker with a board full of steam engines that he made on an old bridgeport and manual lathe. No CNC, no DRO, just a set of knobs with thousandths marks on them. When most of these are spit out by a CNC lathe with a tool changer I just don't have as much respect for them as something made buy an old machinist that enjoyed what he was doing and did it only to prove he could.

Machinist here. 90% of those tops can be spit out in under five minutes (some closer to a minute) with a good CNC lathe and bar feeder and cost less than ten bucks to manufacture in a US shop.
