This is basically Jin-Roh irl, what do you think about the idea of heavy troops equipped specifically to breach and assault confined urban structures in modern megalopolis? Does it make any sense dedicating entire regiments for something that can be normally done by SF?

I've got one of the WW2 armour sets

Manlet size, crappy steel, would only stop super low velocity frag, certainly not a round from any firearm - conclusion - they used to to protect themselves from their own demo charges...

Pretty cool.

The US have already had something similar (full body armor) but from what I know the leg protection was badly thought out and no one liked it.

Seems like these russian guys also have no leg protection.

http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/35052-usmc-interceptor-otv-coyote-brown/

I think the armor shown here is somewhat closer to Jin-roh while keeping mobility.

>heavy troops equipped specifically to breach and assault confined urban structures in modern megalopolis
that's the idea, although their purpose is more of an actual military assault on heavily entrenched positions on urban battlefield like Syria and Iraq rather than police mop ups. i think MoD recognized necessity for heavy engineering/assault units after they've seen footage of tunnel war in Jobar
>Does it make any sense dedicating entire regiments for something that can be normally done by SF?
branches cohesion, combined arms operations. unlike GRU or VDV they don't have freedom to act independently from other branches and they don't go in alone. in a textbook scenario, they're the spearhead to breach the defenses and step aside so that tanks and motor rifle infantry can do their part

they're still spetznas though, considering that narrow specialization puts them above rest of the semi-skilled trigger labor, and equipment costs allow having like one battalion for every federal district

Hard carbide boron ceramics won't shield you from the blast. At best, shrapnel and hand grenade fragments. Fort is the trade-off to counter both explosives and bullets. Goes without saying they recruit the most physically fit people (especially shield bearer) and troopers aren't supposed to run around in full kit for hours like regular infantry.

Not really, just pointing out that just because it won't stop a 5.56 round doesn't make it shit.
If something is designed specifically to do 'a' and it does that task, it not being able to cope with 'b' doesn't make it shit.

The advantages of ceramics are in weight and cost. There are steel composites that are far stronger in that they better sustain multiple impacts, or far cheaper in that they are just slabs of hard metal.

>>28690005
Are you saying that a steel insert protects the wearer better from overpressure than a ceramic insert?

Are you being serious?

>>28690904
So you saying ceramics multihit capability is shit?
>>
>>28690935
No. But they are designed to disperse energy and stop the round, then be replaced as soon as compromised. The SAPI has, if I recall correctly, three impacts to the face before being compromised. That said; being compromised doesn't mean the insert will not continue to function, only that it will not function as reliably as NIJ determined was acceptable.

There are better steels for sustaining multiple impact. But they are heavy and expensive. Look at the B6 armor state dept. Requires on all their uparmors.

Broken-in uniforms vs brand spanking new. My ACUs when thoroughly worn tend to look very light and could almost pass off as some winter-looking bullshit when in bright light where as brand new ones will look like Gen. Austin's uniform albeit maybe more saturated.
>>
>>28679032

Not a bad idea. Mining and boobytrapping has become very widespread as a tactic and the materials for it (reliable fuses and triggers, explosives) are much more widespread than in WW2 or even Korea and Vietnam.

Assault operations in urban areas have become very difficult as a result. I'm sure this kit draws from Russian experiences in Syria and Ukraine (hurrrr, muh proofs).

It is defenitely not marching gear (which is what the light equipment of the common soldier is oriented towards) but these suits could be something that is carried with the logistics vehicles embedded with the unit and handed out to assault teams when the need arises.
