Statutes change and it's not always easy to get a clear answer by checking online, plus certain state-specific rules you really don't want to fuck up on (can I legally carry into a hospital? Legally in my home state you are required to attend a block of classroom instruction given by a certified instructor on the use of lethal force, states which offer reciprocity with CHCL of my home state, and other ins and outs. Along with that we have to qualify for record with the carry weapon we will be using. That along with prints and $150 to the state police gets you a license.
It's still more of a CYA type deal than anything else. Also most FFLs in my state will bypass the NICS check provided you have a valid CHCL. So that however many hour course will save you time at the counter if you buy enough funs.
