My uncle wants a pocket knife for his birthday that had, in his exact words, "nothin' new-fangled." I'm assuming that means no thumbstuds, pocket clips, fancy locks, or anything else useful.

Based on that criteria, is there any reason to get anything besides a Buck 110?
>>
>>28653744
Get him an obsidian knife and call him a tacticool mallninja faggot if he wants anything more modern.
>>
>>28653744
Buck 110s are great and everyone should have one.

That's probably a safe bet, I actually have one that's been handed down twice, from my grandpa to my dad, and my dad to me.

If he wants a fixed blade and something a little nicer, get him a Puma. Again, have one from my grandpa that he carried in Vietnam.
>>
>>28653744
It's a safe choice.

While 110s are classics, they aren't the end-all-be-all of traditional pocket knives.

There are plenty of high quality manufacturers of traditional pocket knives. I recommend looking at A.G. Russell, Northwoods, Great Eastern Cutlery, Canal Street Cutlery, and Queen Cutlery.

>take shortcut through the back of the shopping center, use dank scary hallway
>juan and his homies are hanging out in there
>realize this before its too late
>accidentally bump juan with my handle bar trying to squeeze past them
>going to lock up bike in front
>juan runs out with knife that looked exactly like OP knife
>demands my camo hat
>give him camo hat so i dont get gutted by some puerto rican
>go home and tell mom i just got strong arm robbed

every time i see one of these knives i replay that in my head. seriously fuck florida.

Buy an Opinel, too. They're cheap as fuck, and a nice backup.

The Buck 110 is a hell of a knife, but it's a little hefty for pocket carry. I know there's a smaller version of it, but I don't know what it's called.

Are svord peasent minis decent for their low price? I really want to pick one up with a wooden handle. After my father took my SAK , I've had it since I was just 6 years old, to a bench grinder... Anyone got any reccomendations on relatively cheap UK legal pocket knives? One hand open is a bonus but not important. I'd love a nice traditional wooden handle but not an opinel. That's why I'm thinking peasent mini

Been looking for a new simple knife, debating between buck 110 or 55 or a schrade bear paw/brown bear. Any input or suggestions?

If you're in US or can get amazon ship to your country

http://www.amazon.com/Buck-Knives-110BRS-Folding-Hunter/dp/B000EHYZKK/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1453582559&sr=1-1&keywords=buck+110

I wanted to get it but they don't ship to the shithole where I live.
>>
>>28655832
made in the US, very good materials, quality, fit and finish. The steel they use is only 420HC but performs incredibly well even when pitted against steels twice the price. It managed this because of Buck's heat treat. I think the rockwell is like 58

>The steel they use is only 420HC
>>28655832
because people will pay that much.
>>
>>28657350
I'd say their 420HC is a very good material because of their heat treat. Miles ahead of average 420hc
>>
>>28657350
Materials are only half the story, just as important is the heat treatment. A dipshit can fuck up S30V, a good smith with the right heat treatment can make a seriously good 420HC.
>>
>>28657418
>>28657388
okay, but don't say it costs as much as it does because they use very good materials. They just have a good heat treat for an okay material.
>>
My grandma got me a Buck 110 from their custom shop with a cherry wood handle and my first and last name engraved on the blade. It's a great knife. My dad has had a Buck 110 for over 25 years as his main knife and it's still in great working order.
>>
>>28653744
Was handed one of these by my father when I was 7 or 8 and I still have it.

Can't go wrong.
>>
>>28657460
Yeah, I wasn't saying it's not overpriced, just trying to make sense of the price. They're good knives just not worth that much imo. I guess it did seem like i was trying to justify it

No, they never found him to my knowledge. What pisses me off is I didn't leave immediately and go home, I still went inside and bought shit. I saw him walking around the store with my hat on and I was so pissed but I was scared as fuck to say anything to anyone there like call the cops or hey that fucking guy just robbed me.

Disown him and move on
>>
>>28657323
It not very durable. You'd be better off getting an obsidian blade core and a chest crutch or punch.
>>
>>28653744
Spyderco if you want something lighter. Bucks are fine but heavy as hell and frankly the pocket clip can usually be removed if he doesn't want it.
>>
>>28657323

Too brittle, it would be like having a glass blade. Sure it will cut flesh like a lightsaber but any lateral bending or twisting when cutting tougher things will just snap it
>>
>>28658161
>>28658132
you wouldn't use an obsidian knife as if it were a survival knife. You probably wouldn't use an obsidian knife period. But they can make pretty good skinning knives, or just nice looking display pieces.

>Serious question, why a knife so simple looking costs like 80 dollars?

I have one of the old Buck Brother's 110's, about 40 years old at this point, and I've been offered over $400 for it.
>>
>>28653744
I bought a Kershaw wildcat Ridge for 18 dollars.

3.5 inch blade 8cr13mov steel.

Came with a sheath performs pretty well for 18 dollars of Chinese stainless steel.

The jigged bone handle is nicer than I thought. Now I just wish that ugly 'China' wasn't engraved in.
>>
Schrade old timer. Only time I've ever needed to replace one is when I've filed the blade down to a toothpick.
>>
>>28653744
Get a good old "Old Timer" simple and it works. A very Classic Feel.
