I don't really see what is "snake oil" about a side charging AR. There is nothing fraudulent or falsely claimed about what they do. The charging handle has now been moved to the side. Just because you don't like it doesn't make it not a charging handle on the side of the rifle.

The biggest upgrade in semi-auto ARs from anti walk pins are the stronger pins when using centerfire pistol caliber blowback carriers (ie 9mm ARs). They have a lot more force applied via the ramp to the hammer to assist in retarding blowback which beats up the hammer pin.

People have been selling snake oil as a "cure all" for hundreds of years. In 1917, someone actually tested a brand called "Stanley's Snake Oil", and it was found to contain no actual snake oil, just a bunch of random common shit. The guy was sued and "snake oil" became synonymous with fraudulent cures and miracle products.
A good example of snake oil in the gun industry would be Jesse James' whacky ass suppressor he started advertising a few years back. He wouldn't let anyone test it, but guaranteed it lowered an AR-15's report to 78dB... which is lower than the sound of just the gun cycling. He also claimed it produced NO heat signature, and boosted velocity by 100m/s.
