To be fair, that's not very uncommon. Older people in universities in general tend to prattle on about their "experience," and vets love talking about their "experience." I've known at least 8 or 9 vets in classes who do it all the time, and usually for no reason. Marines tend to be the worst offenders, in my experience.

How about a nice happy medium between these two? I have an old PC on an "I-love-me" shelf in my home office. I get kind of uncomfortable when friends come over and ask about things, but sometimes I have funny stories to share about stuff that happened or places I lived, to include Iraq. But then the next day I kind of feel like a chode because I got to talking so much about it. But that's with friends, not strangers.
I have a vet license plate that's got a small Army crest on it, but not on my wife's car. Heck, she hated being an Army wife. I feel the license plate is subtly tasteful. I have a certain pride in myself and the combat experience I shared with my Soldiers.
I don't make my vet status part of every conversation I have with everyone I meet. If it comes up because it adds to conversation, that's fine.
My non-wartime (non-combat) Marine vet brother was a big douche with EGAs on everything he owns.
