>ISIS seems determined to destroy much of what's in its path as it tries to conquer more territory in Iraq, Syria and elsewhere, but it may have inadvertently saved a fleet of U.S. Air Force jets.

>Gen. David Goldfein, the Air Force's vice chief of staff, tells Defense News the rise of the Islamic State and the U.S. air campaign to fight it has prompted the service to reconsider plans to retire the A-10 ground attack jets, which first joined the Air Force fleet in 1975.

>"When we made the decision on retiring the A-10, we made those decisions prior to ISIL, we were not in Iraq, we were coming out of Afghanistan to a large extent, we didn't have a resurgent Russia," Goldfein said in an interview on "Defense News with Vago Muradian," scheduled for broadcast this weekend, according to the Defense News website.

>Goldfein's office confirmed the general's remarks to CNN.

>The revelation came a week after a report was published on the Defense One website in which Pentagon officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said retirement of the A-10, nicknamed the "Warthog," would not be part of the Pentagon budget request that will be submitted to Congress in February.

>"I welcome reports that the Air Force has decided to keep the A-10 aircraft flying through fiscal year 2017, ensuring our troops have the vital close air support they need for missions around the world. Today, the A-10 fleet is playing an indispensable role in the fight against ISIL in Iraq and assisting NATO's efforts to deter Russian aggression in Eastern Europe," McCain said in a statement.

Even A-10fags and CASfags would disagree with you here.

Making something swing-wing would make it cheaper than a non-swing-wing variant, and the whole CAS debate bullshit is about "muh costs!", "muh low and slow!", "muh situational awareness!", "muh BRRRT is cheaper than Hellfires!", "muh armor!", and so on.

-neither does the F-16, F/A-18 or F-15E, but they still do gun runs
-every aircraft has a gun worse than the A-10 (except the AC-130); at least the F-35's is better than previous US fast jets
-F-35s can fly at 150kts or slower if they want; A-10s crash at 120kts.
-It has 70% more fuel than the A-10

Nope friend, I didnt do that. I just like the A10 very much. But as a german living in the west, I grew up with A10s from ABs Spangdalem and Bitburg flying low over my town which gave the little 80s me an incredible freedom boner fueled by my dad who was like:
>You see those, son? These are warthogs and they treat a tank like an old soda can.

And it still gives me a freedom boner when I see that these planes from a past long gone still get up and fuck shit up!

You know about those AC47s inna vietnam?

back then someone wrote a new version of Puff the magic Dragon for the Gunship

>Puff the magic dragon
>a bird of days long gone
>came to fly in the evening sky
>in a land called Vietnam

Does that give you goosebumps? Yeah? And now you know why I love the A10

I was an FO in the army, and had several (peacetime) occasions to directly control CAS using two different aircraft: the USAF A-10, and USMC-operated F-18s. I'll abbreviate the nine-lines to give you an impression of what each was like:

>ME: blah-blah-blah
>AF: cool dude i see it [BRRRRRRRRRRRRRT] how was that
>ME: if you were a hot chick i'd marry you
>AF: who says i'm not

And...

>ME: blah-blah-blah
>MC: i'm not sure i like this ingress
>ME: it's the only corridor available
>MC: let me circle around blah-blah-blah

Ten minutes elapse and the whole nine-line has to change; send again...

>MC: i don't think target is there
>ME: it's a giant orange building literally right in front of you you're gonna be on top of it in-
WHOOSH
>ME: you just blew by it
>MC: i hope you call attack air better than you do CAS
>ME: i hope you crash your fucking jet

I love the A-10.

In theory, you could use an SDB to provide CAS from standoff ranges as far as 60 nmi.

Because the gun runs would consist of less than 3.3 seconds of firing time from the 180 rounds in the F-35A and 4 seconds of firing time from the 220 rounds in the F-35B and F-35C.

"Close" as in striking enemy targets that are close to the front lines and therefore to your own forces. Not "close" as in you actually have to be close to what you're shooting at.

CAS is in contrast with Deep Air Support (DAS), or interdiction, where you fly beyond the front lines and hit targets inside enemy territory.
>>
>>28639766
