Similar set up to Canada. We have non-restricted, restricted and prohibited classes. There is no even halfway coherent rule that clearly separates restricted and non-restricted (SKS is unrestricted while a single shot sport shooting pistol is restricted). There are some length restrictions which can make something restricted though. Anything fully auto is prohibited. The functional difference between these classes is what you can do with them. 1 weekend course/exam for non-restricted licences and do all the normal things. Different 1 weekend class/exam for restricted. Restricted firearms have more stringent transport requirements and you can only have them unlocked in a few places (authorized ranges, etc.). Prohibited licences are no longer being issued but there are still people alive who have them. The bigger problem, I think, is that you will always have liberals who are unhappy with anyone having any fun or any freedom at all. They will always be a threat and while keeping them complacent is a priority, I have no desire to fight a losing battle for their 'happiness.'

I personally would like to see more enforced training before or while purchasing a firearm something as stupid as how to properly use the damn thing how is the preferred ways to keep it safely within the household gotta think of those children. Some say that's all the owners responsibility which granted it is but I've seen/talked to many people that didn't have a fucking clue or didn't know better.
Hell it's as easy as unloading that shotgun that's leaning against the night stand when extended family is over for a Christmas dinner.

They should be seperated into 3 levels where they are priced so the scariest weaponry like nukes/cannons/missiles/laser guns whatever are the CHEAPEST to own and subsidized by the government as a 'Voluntary Guard' military branch, and then tier 2 would be everything else smaller then a cannon so machine guns, blackpowder mortars, anything a citizen can own now except tier 1 which would be single shot shotguns and fudd rifles and be made really expensive.
