How come we hardly ever hear kebab removal stories from these two?
Both countries have compulsory military service, so one would expect tons of interesting deployment tales to come out of that region.

FDF active reserve grunt here. I hang out with the folks having been into Lebanon, Kosovo, Mali, Afghanistan etc etc. There's plenty of hella good stories, but the shittiest ones are kinda don't ask don't tell-business among the general public cause we still can't manage to tell ourselves we're fighting the same war as everyone else in the sandbox. It's a shame, the overseas guys just got their vet status and bennies, YEARS late...

To be fair, a national channel made a good docuseries about our folks in ISAF - now Resolute Support - in 2008, but no one kinda cares to ask for more stuff, cause deploying overseas is so far off the everyday general purpose of our things. A shame, we're gonna need to hang out more in various operations in the future and the overseas department is already yacking about a shortage on recruits. Guess I need to file in some paperas myself...

As noted Finnish military does its foreign operations during what is considered peace-time conditions with professionals and volunteers. The much larger wartime armed forces mostly consisting from reservists is reserved for defending the homeland in case of war.
Typically Finnish contribution to operations on foreign soil has been about battalion size, while the wartime armed forced would have several hundred thousand men.

Yeah - I know. Technically they are not braches of Armed Forces, since during peace time they are under Ministry of Interior instead of Ministry or Defence, but they still do hell of a lot "proper border surveillance" than Navy (Merivoimat) ever does and in case of war would become part of Armed Forces.

I went to NCO school in a signalier company, which have a lot of women. Luckily though, my branch of signaliership had a single woman who did her job just as well as anyone, never complaining. Other branches weren't so lucky, with constant whining, one causing a bit of a scandal by fucking other conscripts on garrison and such.

for example last spring there was a "submarine" on the coast of helsinki.

The unfortunately reality check is that while major nations can disregard the international treaties that they have signed, small nations like Finland do not necessarily have that luxury.
Hence while we are in shit with this exodus of "refugees" (most are actually emigrants misusing the situation with some real political refugees, criminals and quite possibly few terrorists among them), IMO on the long run the smart move is not to break the treaties that we have signed, but put all that have already arrived through the process and try to sent back those that are not really political refugees. Admitted that sucks - big time. The financial expenses alone are a massive burden to our already hard pressed economy, but alternatives are not really that much better. Now that the EU-countries are closing their borders (I had been expecting that to happen already few months) all we have to do is make sure that the route of this exodus is not going to change through Russia to Finland. On the long run the best solution would be get at least some semblance of peace to Iraq and Afghanistan, but I would not hold my breath waiting for it to happen.
