Why do post-Cold War ships all have this strange sort of grey Nintendo casing look? What is it made of?
>>
>>28628355
Marine anti-corrosion paint. They've changed the formula to cause less environmental damage.

Anyone else find these ships hideous yet gorgeous at the same time?

Reminds me of early 3D graphics.
>>
>>28628364

Interesting. I figured it might be anti-flash or something. But why are they so much bulkier looking than ships in the past? Do they have more armour now?

Another separate question as well, but related... I've seen what an Exocet can do to an old style ship, how would one of these new ships fare if hit by an ASM?
>>
>>28628434

I know what you mean. They kind of look like plastic toys, but they look like cool toys that are fun to play with. They don't look intimidating the way a battleship bristling with guns did. In fact, it seems like it's often difficult to even see a modern warship's armaments unless you know where to look. Usually all I can spot is the CWIS.

Japs knew how to build a ship to be cool-looking. Just look at that pagoda mast.
>>
>>28628436
They tend to have less armor, but look bulker but sleeker because of changing radar designs use large, flat surfaces rather then parabolic dishes, and the antennas they do use tend to be covered in plastic domes to protect them from weather.

A hit from a large ASM breaches the side of a ship and filled the interior with liquid copper, fire and bits of the side of the ship, as well as a what is left of the missile. Secondary fires and explosions occur. On a large ship, a limited number of compartments will be breached. On a small ship, the damage may be universal and cause the structure of the ship to fail outright.

Getting hit by one is a Very Bad Thing, and ship suitability focuses on not letting that happen.

can you imagine what i must feel like to be that high on top of all these guns

what an amazing sight it must have been
>>
>>28628541
If I was the captain, I'd have a lounge chair outside on the highest deck, so I could sit and smoke while towering over the ocean and watching the sun set over the task force formation. Maximum comfy...
>>
>>28628504

I find Fusou's pagoda the most exciting. Her displacement is very exciting in design spec doujinshi.

>>28628508

Yeah, that does sound bad. I guess it's gotten to the point where it's impractical to mount enough armour on a ship to defend it from a missile?
>>
>>28628587
Indeed. You'd need something about equal to the armor of a Iowa class battleship to resist them. While fast battleships could accept such an investment in defense it's impractical for anything else, especially when the obvious counter would be to simply shoot you with an even larger missile. (It's easier to build a huge missile then a huge armored ship.)

I've gotta side with North Korea. Their first interaction with the western world was an American merchant that opened cannon fire on them for refusing to trade with him.

And then Americans came back and tore the nation in two...

We did nuke Japan so maybe they liked that.

But overall, Korea has had negative experiences with us.

And we are STILL trying to control their lives.

We should leave them alone.

1. get on better terms with their largest ally (China)
2. Get agricultural infrastructure built to feed the nation to a decent degree
THEN you can work on nukes. Being on good terms with China should be a big enough deterrent until the nation stabilizes.

This is from the perspective of the whole nation being state run. if there was an economy, the food situation would mostly solve itself over time, freeing up government dollars to R&D military research.

Modern cars use more steel their collapsible structures. Modern warships deal with damage by compartmentalization, burn everything in this compartment, hopefully we can keep fire out of next compartment.

if you paste the URL of an image in the file browser to post it on 4chan, sometimes it uses the entire path string as the file name. Windows uses Internet Explorer to automatically access the image on the internet, store it in a temporary location, then upload it for posting. Alternatively, if you have 4chanx, click the chain next to the filename box and post the URL. Sometimes it doesn't work though.

Modern warships don't rely on armor at all. They rely on detection, either avoiding detection or defecting the enemy first, and they rely on anti-missile defenses like ECM, chaff, decoys, jamming, or intercepting missiles. The armor that would be required to stop modern antiship missiles would be extremely heavy and expensive, and still limited effectiveness.

So yeah, they pretty much are made of tinfoil and dreams.

>>
>>28628654
Despite what everyone says about F-35Bs, I will claim that it isn't set up for them at all. It is set up for what the Japanese NEED. They do not need a true CV. They have land based aviation. What they DO need is as much ASW as they can get, seeing as China is right fucking there. And that means ASW helicopters. Hence DDHs. The DDH designation has its origins in the fucking 50s. Until recently, they looked like normal destroyers. Now, they're flat tops, because flat tops can hold more helicopters.

So please, before you retards start saying "muh F-35B", look at its lineage, and then realize it is in no way set up for it. The elevators aren't big enough or strong enough. The deck aren't heat treated. They are meant for only helicopters.

Hell they're 20,000 tons and the smallest ship capable of operating the F-35 is 40,000 tons AND needed $170 million in refits to even make that happen.

The tonnage doesn't particularly matter here. Remember that the American LHDs and the like are amphibious assault ships first and foremost. Most of their space is devoted to the Marines, which means tonnage is spent on them. A 20,000 ton ship SHOULD be able to launch an F-35B just fine, it's just that these 20,000 ton ships are in no way set up for it. If they went in and had a massive refit where the elevators, deck, and hangars were all revamped, probably. Oh, and adding a larger ammunition bunker.

I don't think you realize how fast a Sparverio class is.

>>
>>28644270
Not necessarily. Most fast non-supercavitating torpedos tend to max out at 50-55kn, so some might outrun the boat. Of course, if speed is so critical, then supercavitating torpedoes are the only choice, or maybe some sort of compact ASROC system.
>>
>>28644097
If they're stowing helicopters down there, they could manage it.

New anon stepping in, outrunning the torpedo isn't necessarily running faster than it, but running fast enough away that it takes too long to catch you, thus running out of fuel.

>(also most data groups call "Millennials" anyone currently 18-34, as much as the older end would rather be called Gen X)

The Harvard center classifies anyone born between 1964-1984. So suck it millennial faggot.

I don't have any weed, though. And the marihuanas murder people.

I love German PT boats. They were like mini destroyers. Cannons, AA, torpedoes, and depth charges in such a small package.

A 30 knot ship armed with a 57 and a 40mm bofors cannon, 4 40cm torpedoes, 68 mines and 8 ASMs (alternatively 6 53cm torpedoes) is pretty baller. Sad that it's been shredded.
