Hey /k/ budget minded guy here. What are the best jigs for milling out your 80% lower easily, and are cost effective. Also what is the cheapest Completed upper receiver I can buy?
>>
>>28626670
James Madison Tactical sells polymer 80% lowers that come with their own machining jig for about $90 I think. It's not a bad deal. Not sure if the jig fits other lowers.
>>
>>28626836
That's not bad, I wonder if I could take measurements from the polymer and cast my own from aluminum so that the jig would work with it.
>>
>budget minded
>80%
the two do not go together

Polymer 80 is the tits
It's still a poly lower so it wont hold up like an aluminum lower but they beefed up the area where buffer tube goes which is a weak point on poly lowers. I completed mine with a drill press and some nigger rigging. Pic related.

if you want it built right it costs money(you need tools and shit)
usually more money than just buying a stripped lower + transfer fees

if you want it done budget you get this cause fuck buying a jig etc
>>
>>28626938
>>28626909
ill never trust poly lowers again... mine snapped in 3 places when i was tourqing the barrel down
>>
http://genesiscnc.com/product/polymer-80-ar-15/

This one is $60 and comes with jig, drill bits, end mill bit, and the lower has a brass insert for the buffer tube threads.
>>
>>28626983
>torquing the barrel with the lower attached
im not a fan of polymer receivers but your dumbass would have broken an aluminum one doing the same shit
receiver blocks exist for a reason
>>
>>28626983
they are fragile as fuck, but they are a lot cheaper than completing an aluminum 80% and in my case It was really my only option because I'm not 21 yet so I can't buy a stripped lower and I'm somewhat of a poorfag and didn't want to spend the money on tooling to mill out an aluminum reciever. I'll probably replace it with a real lower at some point but for now it's surprisingly a lot less shitty than I thought it would be

I always see this 80% AR lower talk posted here and have no idea what it means. (as i am an aussie) Can't you just buy the lower section to an AR without having to work on it to make it functional? What does it mean to make an 80% lower to 100%?
>>
>>28627078
An 80% lower is not a gun according to the US government, a 100% lower is. This means that you can have the 80% shipped direct to your door instead of to an FFL where you then get raped for a 50$ transfer fee. It also means that you can get your AR without a background check if that sort of thing is important to you.
>>
>>28627056
if you have the tools to do a polymer receiver semi competently(aka drillpress+ jig or router+jig) you can do an aluminum one its the same fucking process unless your plan was to carve out your polymer receiver with a heated butter knife
>>
>>28627099
Ah right that makes sense.
Cheers for the help.
>>
>>28627056

>>
>>28626670
Just found tactical machining, and holy shit I'm pretty stoked wth how affordable they are. Even the 100% receivers, but especially the fact that they sell 1911 frames omfg :D skeet skeet nigga
>>
>>28627415
Saw their site, they do have good prices but theyre sold out on 60% of their product line and they don't sell a complete jig kit so I'll pass.
>>
>>28627415
when they go on sale at TM you can get 3 80% receivers for I think $27 each
>>
>>28626670
not worth it OP, easier to just buy an anderson stripped lower for the $50.
I tried buying all the shit to build my own 80% and shit got expensive quick. Sure it's fun but unless you're a shady fuck or want to avoid Obongo coming for your shit, I wouldn't bother, shit you could just buy a complete AR with the amount you're gonna end up paying in the end.
>>
>>28627610
OP here. I have reasons I want an 80% rather than stripped

>1. I live in California

I guess thats the only reason.
>>
>>28627638
>iktf
Every gun shop around here charged $50 for FFL transfers. $50. At that price I could buy another stripped lower.
>>
>>28627638
even if you live in california and get hit with a fuckload of fees its still more cost effective to buy a stripped receiver
>>
>>28627001
Anyone try making a plastic 80% with a hand drill? I don't have a drill press.
>>
>>28627711
Why? I have a shit ton of tools at my disposal. The only foreseeable expense is the upper and other small parts.
>>
http://www.wisearms.com/products/complete-ar-15-16-build-kit-with-80-percent-lower

What about this? Seems like the all around best deal on getting all the parts in one place minus the jig.
>>
>>28627887
buy a fully assembled upper
installing a barrel properly involves buying more specialized tools

you dont even want those parts railed gas block carbine gas no chromelining m4 cuts get the fuck out of here
>>
>>28627737
You gotta be fucking kidding me.

You can get an Anderson lower at a gun show for $50.

For the love of god why are you so intent on making an 80%, and a polymer one at that?
>>
>>28627947
>implying private sales exist in california
A 50 buck stripped lower will cost 120 dollars when you're done with it.
>>
>>28626889
cast lowers crack, specifically the buffer tube support. a few vendors tried this in the 80's.
>>
>>28627947
hes underage and in California
chances are hes never touched a drill press cause they stopped doing shop class in schools so he has no confidence using tools

for this reason he thinks polymer will be easier then aluminum even though its the same process with the same tools to remove material

>>28627975
120 bucks is still a reasonable price ive paid 200 for one in 2010 and it was still worth it cause i got to offload it during the panic for profits
>>
>>28627997
>hes underage and in California
Nah, I'm not OP, but I am in cali. I just want to know if making a ghost gun with hand tools would work. Judging from the bills trying to be passed, having an AR-15 registered to you doesn't sound like the best idea.
>>
>>28626906
What he means is that if you want to complete an 80% and want it to be in good condition afterwards you need a jig, drill press and milling router. All those thing cost money and aren't cheap.
>>
I bought a complete polymer lower today on a whim... I dont really have any expectations one way or another. should be here in a week, ill let /k/ know how it goes after I put some rounds through it.
>>
>>28628020
you can make one with hand tools and it will function. it wont look nice but its not hard to make it functional. if you can measure.
even that shitty dremel only build on an aluminum receiver supposedly worked.

if i was going to do another 80 and had only handtools id get that 100 3 pack from tactical machine. the first 2 can be practice if they work great if they dont whatever its practice. by the third try you should beable to make something functional.

its not that hard to drill 3 holes in the right spot. then remove enough material for parts to move

its actually easier with aluminum cause youve got more room for fuckups. remove too much on a polymer and youve severely compromised structural integrity.
>>
>>28628085
Looks like it's all out of stock. Thanks for the advice, though.
>>
>>28628122
if you do decide to go at it with no jig and handtools do expect to fuck up. its okay if you fuck up as long as you didnt injure yourself in the process.you learned something and you can always buy another 80 they are pretty cheap.
>>
Are 80% lowers still legal in Ca?
>>
>>28627711
I will be picking up my stripped psa lower on Friday. Or rather starting the paperwork.
>fuck this state
Anyways, it will end up costing me $116 for my lower.
That, plus a psa rifle kit ($470) gives me a $586 AR.
That's cheaper than any dpms shit that I won't like. Plus I get to know my rifle better.
Buy a stripped lower, also did I say fuck this state?
>>
>>28627997
I'm OP that wasn't my post, don't want polymer but I'd try it out because it's cheap, I'm actually confident with most tools, and have access to them.

The only part you got right was the california part. And I really don't want an AR lower under my name on the DOj's list, to be confiscated at a later date.
>>
>>28628163
Yes senpai. But probably not for long you never know when the antis will slide it under another AWB.
>>
>>28628163
For now. Predictably the antis are trying to pass a bill that will ban 80% lowers.
>>
>>28628184
>I really don't want an AR lower under my name on the DOj's list, to be confiscated at a later date.
everyones like this but you know what your going to be on a list eventually whether you like it or not.you me and everyone else here are probably on a list cause of being on 4chan. if you end up liking guns cause of this ar you will want to buy more. this is just a fact you cant stop at one gun. its impossible to make everything from an 80. theres only a few platforms where an 80 is even viable. you will decide hey i want a glock or whatever go to a store and buy one.

LEAVE CALIFORNIA

LEAVE CALIFORNIA

LEAVE CALIFORNIA

It isn't a free state. In a free state you can buy an Anderson lower for $50 at a gun show. Then order a build kit from PSA for $400 that comes with a completely assembled upper.

Assembling the lower takes basic hand tools any garage toolbox will have, your neighbor who works on cars will have what is neccessary. You maybe some roll pin punches (amazon.com for $15).

There you go perfectly good AR-15 for less that $500.

Oh and because you don't live in CALIFORNIA you don't have any bullet buttons, gross stocks, or magazine capacity limits.

Come taste the freedom.

LEAVE CALIFORNIA

Fine they put me on a list someday, trying to be 100% off the grid is unreasonable I get that. But come the day they just decide my guns are no longer okay to own, I'd rather they take the few that they know of and leave behind what they don't know about.

You might be able to get the majority, but you'll never get them all.

don't buy from genesis cnc the jig is unusable, wont work with the modlus jig and the plastic was so shitty it melted when i used my dremel.
>>
forgot to add that the grip screw is a joke, its a thin screw that only engages a few threads so its unusable.
>>
>>28626889
If you're going to cast a lower, why would you not cast a 100% instead of an 80?
>>
>>28626670
When I did mine, I used a chisle, two blocks of wood, and some long #8 bolts to make the jig. The jig was really just to hold it sturdy in a bench vice while I did the drilling by hand. After I got most of the pocket drilled out I switched to a dremel with some aggressive bur bits, then some drum sanding bits, and finally a 1/8" end mill bit for the bottom of the pocket. Took me about 5 hours (going really fucking slow, measuring, hand filing, test fitting, pressing and removing pins, sanding, dremeling) and it works fine right now. Looks like hell inside, but who fucking cares. I'll post some pics if this thread is still up when I get home from work.

I mostly did it as a fun "how fucking redneck can I get?" project. Went through a case of Bud Light and 7 Hank Williams albums while I was working on it. Thought I did ok redneck wise and now I have a mostly functional AR.

>>
>>28631696
Personally, I thought it was fun to do it by hand. I /could/ spend $150 on a jig for the one lower I wanted to complete, but I have a larger sense of accomplishment knowing I made an usable lower for literally just the cost of the alum paperweight and the one end mill bit I bought to finish it. $22 total.

If you build more than one rifle cause you're not poorfag retarded tier, it easily pays itself off when rifle transfers go for 30$ for each receiver + tax and pistol being 40-50 plus tax, mind you for each receiver you transfer.

Plus even with the basic harbor freight end mill, which turns into a mid/high tier garage CNC with about 400 dollars worth of mods, allows you to machine most anything, even handguards, which when they usually go for 150 - 300 dollars, easily makes up the money you spend.

>>
>>28632272
>the basic harbor freight end mill
>which turns into a mid/high tier CNC with about $400 worth of mods

Literally what?

A mid/high tier garage CNC is a $5k 80s Mori with an old controller and wiring issues you have to figure out, or a converted Bridgeport.

A mid/high tier commercial CNC VMC is a Haas, Mazak (mid tier), or new Mori (high tier), all of which are $100k+, and take years to pay off for a successful machine shop

Also an end mill is a tool, a vertical mill is what you are thinking of.

Do you have one? Just put a block of steel in there and try. Cut slow. The worst that could happen is a chipped bit
