I want to buy one. I live in MD and choices for raifus are limited.

Compared to an AR they're less reliable, heavier, smaller aftermarket, unique magazines, and generally sad

Just buy or build a heavy barrel AR.

The general consensus is that the newer ones would be really solid rifles if they were 200 bucks less.

You could build a good AR for the price of a stock Mini.

They look cool though.

If you live in New York or want to do a featureless for California, get an ARES SCR lower...shitty protrietary trigger and ARES are Jews making you buy the bolt release button separate but it's still more accurate than a Mini-14 or get a Thordsen, Hammerhead or monsterman grip.

>>28612162
This right here. They look amazing but that's about where their advantages end. Overpriced for what they are.

It's past its prime. The bottom fell out on the ar15 market, and the mini 14 lost its niche as the budget gun, as the rifle to buy during the ass weapons ban.

I think mini 14s, especially in acc556 stock, the one with the underfolder, look sexy as fuck. If I one the lottery, Id certainly buy one.

But the ar15 lets you get such a good rifle for $600-$800, that mini 14s get left in the dust.
>>
>>28612068
Get an AR carbine with HBAR, they are still legal.
>>
>>28612293

>>
>>28612334
the mini is absolutely positively less reliable than an AR

The mini thirty has garbage tier reliability.
>>
>>28612068
The one my dad has has always done well. I love it, but it's probably better to go with an AR
>>
>>28612068
/k/ approved not really
It's an ok rifle but the AR is slightly better in every way. If the AR wasn't around then it would be a fine option but that isn't how /k/ works.
>>
>>28612068
If you don't want an HBAR, AR pistols are still good to go. But then again...

It gets a grudging yes from me if you live in a bad state and can't be doing with whatever the hell is going on with neutered ARs like the Hammerhead

The SCR is also a good choice and apparently Remimgton Automatic shotgun stocks will fit them if wood is your thing. Though the fucking Jewimg that comes with it is frankly bullshit but it is up against a Mini 14...
>>
>>28612068
Newfags think disrespecting the mini-14 is a meme, but really, it's not that good of a rifle, and I'm an AK fan, but I'd still tell you to buy an AR-15 and mod it to be featureless.

The Ares SCR lower has a stiff trigger, a tight magwell and doing tactical reloading and charging with the right hand on the grip is difficult and it's really better to treat it like a saiga as far as battery of army with a strong hand, but even with those faults making it less of a combat rifle than a non neutered AR-15, it's still superior compared to a Mini-14

Bought mine in 94 after the AWB was passed. Seller misunderstood the grandfather clause and thought pre-existing would be illegal. Got the gun, an extra standard stock and 1000 rounds of surplus for $600. I've had exactly one stoppage when a case head came off of some factory reloads I was shooting. I sort of curious where the "Mini is unreliable" thing comes from. It hasn't been my experience. Accuracy does suffer under sustained fire as the thin barrel heats up.

I have a garand and a 20 inch AR.

I still kinda want a Mini with wood stock.

How are the new ones?

Do they sell a wood one with flash hider?

Is it worth it?

>>
>>28616133

The Mini doesn't hold up well to dirt and grime, so it's a poor rifle for backpacking or bush hunting.

The other issue with the Mini is its price, they go for about the cost of a good AR which is the superior rifle.

There good rifles, and I'd buy one in a heartbeat, if they were about $200 less expensive.
>>
>>28618764
>How are the new ones?
Barrel problem is fixed but it still is needs a pretty clean environment to work in. Honestly not much of a problem as long as you keep it slung and out of the dirt but many are not comfortable with the idea their gun may stop working if they drop it in mud and then need it.
>Do they sell a wood one with flash hider?
Probably, if not a call to Ruger's god tier CS would help a lot
>Is it worth it?
It's a nice looking rifle and works fine for range/ walking around but you need to ask what you are planning to do with this rifle and why you want it.

If the above problems you are willing to deal with and you like it, go for it. It's a damn fine looking rifle.

>tfw my dad is the gook with a DP51 shooting one handed stance
Not nearly as embarrassing as almost getting kicked off the range becasue he climbed on top of the concrete bench and started practicing prone. I should get him a K2 one day...
>>
>>28616133
As an above poster said, the reliability issue people parrot is more a function of the open reciever allowing dirt and grime to cause stoppages. This is certainly true, but having used one in the woods for years without issue and seeing as how it didn't seem to come up much in world war 2, I don't give it too much thought
>>
>>28619449
If you pour mud into literally any receiver you can cause a failure on any firearm. Even le ebin AK.

Being that the mini 14 has been around for so many years and still remains a popular choice for civilian shooters there's no reason to pan it as being utter garbage.
>>
>>28612068
I always see Minis in that kind of body, but I've never seen that body for sale anywhere, unless I'm just retarded. Anybody know where to get that kind of chassis for the Mini-14?

At that price point you're not getting a 'good' AR

>>
>>28619608
In what way? Their Ar556 uses certain proprietary parts which means you are limited in how you can modify and replace its parts.

Other than doing something retarded and submerging your rifle in muck, I'd be pretty skeptical that the average user would ever notice a difference of reliability between the two rifles given proper maintenance.
>>
>>28612162
>Should be $200 less

Yeah. I love my Mini 14 and don't regret buying it (was my dad's favorite rifle of mine), but you're right they really should be ~$500.

If they were I'd be more likely to buy another Mini than another AR or AK.
>>
>>28619645

>In what way?
Reliability and accuracy.

>Their Ar556 uses certain proprietary parts
A screw up delta ring that accepts all handguards and a FSB that will accept any bayonet?

>oh no! It has better parts that are still compatible with all other ARs!
>Other than doing something retarded and submerging your rifle in muck,

Or getting it wet, or getting dirt on it.

>>28619624

>I'd be pretty skeptical that the average user would ever notice a difference of reliability between the two rifles given proper maintenance.
If all you are ever going to do with it is sit at a bench all you will notice are the more occasional jams due to it's shitty design and sub par accuracy.

Yes, budget ARs will rape minis on a bench and the longer you shoot the wider the minis groups will be.

So you are a buttmad mini owner that is in denial? ok.

>>good parts
>>compatible with other ARs
Yup

>wew lad
>memes

So do you have any actual defense of the mini or are we just going to shitpost back and forth until you throw a hissyfit and continue to think your mini is as good as a low tier AR?
>>
>>28619774
Where did I say it was as accurate as an AR? That's mechanically impossible.

And the Ruger AR556 is not compatible with most ARs which is why it also suffers from being a special snowflake just like the mini.
>>
>>28619828
>Where did I say it was as accurate as an AR?

You did not you said
>accuracy meme

Implying some sort of meme about accuracy, I would assume it implies that the AR or AR556 is not accurate and that you see people spouting it's accuracy as a meme.

Or that the mini is not a barrel melting wide shooter.

In which case you are a moron.

Or you were making a statement that accuracy in general is a meme in which case you are a retard.

>And the Ruger AR556 is not compatible with most ARs
Except it is, tell me what is not compatible right now

I have mixed an AR556 upper and lower with 5 other ARs and they worked fine.
>>
>>28619882
The design of the AR15 is far more suited to accuracy than the Mini 14 or Garand action.

>Or that the mini is not a barrel melting wide shooter.
Modern minis aren't though. This is a stupid, stupid meme for stupid, stupid people.
>>
>>28619929

>Modern minis aren't though
They still are, you can call it a meme but I have owned multiple 580 minis and they all do the same thing once you put a lot of rounds down range

If they did not there would be no market for the barrel braces.
>>
>>28619318
Do you really think they would make a custom rifle?

How the hell would ordering that even work?

Sadly I am poor.
>>
>>28620338
I'd imagine it would just be a matter of tracking down a threaded, barreled action and mating it with a wood stock. I dunno, just ask Ruger. If you are poor you really might be better off getting a franken AR if you live in a restricted state.
>>
>>28612068
