1A9X1 looks pretty cool too, do you like it?

Sorry for being all over the place

>>28581262
You will see faster progress if you switch to doing a more difficult form of your exercises instead of doing 100+ easy ones. For pushups, diamond pushups, wide hands, archer pushups, etc. are all options for a more difficult variant. For squats, try bulgarian split squats, shrimps, and pistol squats (those are doable -> difficult -> very hard, in that order). You should still be doing situps in order to practice the form but planks and plank variants, leg raises, and russian twists are all better core workouts.

>>28582557
If you have a pullup bar (or a straight tree branch, or extremely strong fingers) you can do hanging leg raises. You can also do a different leg raise laying on your back. You can hold weights to make russian twists more difficult, and if you google for them there are a lot of plank variants (one leg off the ground, opposite arm/leg both off the ground, on your side using just one arm/leg, on your side with your top leg in the air, etc.) that work all the way around your core and can make it very difficult if you're advanced.

I'm leaving it up to you guys to google form for anything you don't know, and remember to use strict form in all exercises.

Dealing with posterior shin splints? Can't even run 50m without it aching

Cause is most likely that I've been sedentary for years and pushed myself too hard. I felt it get sore and just thought it was DOMS but after one day of pushing myself super hard on a treadmill through the pain then I stopped and felt an immediate sharp pain that made my hobble around

I've rested it and iced it for about 5 days now. I tried deadlifts the other day but even that flared it up a bit. I'm planning on switching all running to biking and I may try some other cardio that has no impact. I'm just going to continue normal progression on my resistance training.

Is this a good idea?

Going to MEPS today for the Air Force, looking forward to my penis inspection tomorrow. I got a 91 on my practice ASVAB, hoping for 3D0X4, 3d0x2, 3D1x2 or 1A8X2.

Also another thing, my recruiter seemed great and told me that I don't actually have to list an open category of specific number of jobs, that there was no regulation for it. He just said not to point back to him when they ask where I learned it. Could this fuck me in some way if I tried doing this? Has anyone else done it? I'd mainly just not want to list an open category.

Couple hours late, but that is helpful. I'll start to increase the difficulty of the exercises, start with diamond and move to archer when I get better at them and start doing planks and leg raises. I can definitely feel the difference already.
Really fucking stupid question actually, but in basic when they say situps, do they mean the "to your knees" variety, or do they mean crunches?

To your knees. Each branch prefers slightly different form for pushups and situps (elbows slightly more in or out, hands behind your head or on your chest, etc) but you do a full situp for all of them

Doing paper work for a waiver
>>
>>28593749
I would say so. How long does it take for you to feel the burn when planking? Make sure you have really strict form, lazy form when planking can add a minute or more to how long you can hold it, and if youre advanced you can likely go several minutes, so it might just take a while for you to feel the burn. There are also a lot of more difficult plank variants you can find online.

>>
>>28595815
Until it doesn't hurt anymore.

Stop rucking, and I would suggest being careful on the elliptical as well. If you have a gym membership, you can run up and down the lanes in the pool. When you resume running, stay away from hard surfaces when possible, and take it slow.

And for fuck's sake, like I say every thread, don't run every day. Too many people in these threads try to go from whalemode to running 5-7 days a week. Shit needs to be in the OP template.

Of course you are.

It doesn't matter if it's doing more damage, it's not letting you heal. Pushing yourself hard, and hurting yourself in the process is not going to get you into shape faster. Shin splints can halt your progress for 3-6 weeks.

Let me guess, you've got a ship date, and you're in nowhere near the right shape for 11X let alone 18X?

>whats so bad about AAFES? I like it as a dependent?

>Whats wrong with the National Guard? The Texas guard or air guard seems cool

>Why can't soldiers carry sidearms on post?

>What do you hate most about the military?

>>
>>28596427
During AIT? I wont even risk it.
Talking about my background check? Is that really an issue?
>>
>>28596659
>why does everyone(vets) keep telling me not to join the military? whats so bad about it.
If you join, you have to have the right reason for joining. "Being a war hero" is not the right reason, since the likelihood of being a war hero is slim to nil.
Then there's the low pay and the sometimes insanely frustrating workplace culture. (i.e. this guy's getting a promotion over you because, despite you being better at your job, he can do more pullups.)

>whats so bad about AAFES? I like it as a dependent?
Slow service and shit customer service, basically.

>Whats wrong with the National Guard? The Texas guard or air guard seems cool
Nothing at all. Some guys in the National Guard seem to think they're the same as active duty personnel, but they're the exception rather than the rule, and they'd probably be assholes for other reasons if they were active duty.

>Why can't soldiers carry sidearms on post?
Are you kidding? There is no reason FOR a soldier to carry a gun on base unless he's going to the range or he's on guard duty. Is he going to work? He doesn't need a gun there. Is he going back to the barracks? He doesn't need a gun there.

>What do you hate most about the military?
Looking back at it, probably the thing that bugged me the most was the command environment that meant you were just playing a game of cover-your-ass instead of doing your job. I disliked the way a lousy commander's attitude quickly seeped into everyone else in his command.

>>
>>28596960
>Is officer pay decent?

Median starting salaries in 2015 with Bachelor's degrees in the following fields:

Business: $49,035
Engineering: $64,367
Liberal arts and Humanities: $36,237

Salary of a newly commissioned 2nd Lieutenant: $34,862.40

So no, it's not great.

Are you going to regret it? That depends on what you want to get out of service. If it's for money, then yes, you will regret it.
>>
>>28596870
thanks bud

I want to go as some form of service to my country. I might do police service here first and move on to the army. I dont need combat although i guess a tour would be """"cool""""

the sidearm thing was just odd to me because they're literally soldiers. Even civilians can carry sidearms
>>
What does a combat engineer do? Why does every game arm combat engineers with Shotguns?
>>
>>28594209
I regularly have my shoulders get tired before my core as well. Just try planks before pushups I guess.

>>28595562
Reminder that distance doesn't matter as long as you are running most of the time you're out. It's usually actually better to run slow so that you can get more time out of your workout- as long as you are running and not walking, you are getting a cardio benefit no matter how slow you are. Save the speed for speed work (which is still important, especially if you want to improve your time).

>>28595711
If you get good at running in the heat and humidity you will probably see your ability jump slightly when running in the cold. You'll get used to the cold in less than a week.

>>28595815
If you have shin splints, stop running and rucking until they don't hurt anymore, and then wait one extra day, and then resume training. Also, don't fucking ruck if you don't know how, because you can mess yourself up. Best way to train for rucking before you learn how is to do squats/deadlift and go hiking. And whatever you fucking do don't go running with weight on your back.

The Engineer is a soft-spoken, amiable Texan with an interest in all things mechanical. He specializes in constructing and maintaining Buildings that provide support to his team, rather than fighting at the front lines, making him the most suitable for defense. The Engineer's various gadgets include the Sentry Gun, an automated turret that fires at any enemy in range, the Dispenser, a device that restores the health and ammunition of nearby teammates, and Teleporters that quickly transport players from point A to point B.

Officer pay is quite solid when taking into account that you don't have to pay for food or housing, especially for a single man right out of college. It's really important to consider the amount you save on food and housing when looking at military compensation.

That's just the base pay, m8. Once you include other entitlements, it's significant higher than that. Varies by location.
>>
>>28597084
>Officer pay is quite solid when taking into account that you don't have to pay for food or housing,

Yes, it's true there are perks, but it's still small potatoes considering the figures listed are the MEDIAN salaries. That means half the people make even more than that.

If you have a degree that OCS likes (basically any STEM) you are all but certain to be taking an enormous cut into your earnings potential in exchange for a commission.

But then, no one becomes an officer for the money.
>>
>>28597084
>Officer pay is quite solid when taking into account that you don't have to pay for food or housing

It's very unusual to get meal card and government housing as a new officer once you're out of training. You'll receive allowances for housing and food and when it comes to the housing allowance, unless you're an idiot, you will spend much less on housing than you receive in your allowance.

HOWS THE PUSSY SITUATION AT FORT BRAGG?

This is an important question which is why this is in all caps. I also used a click bait picture of a woman who may look underaged. But that's not important. What's important is the pussy game status at Ft Bragg? Is everyone forced to accept the left overs after Pat McNamara's clones come rolling through?

>why does everyone(vets) keep telling me not to join the military? whats so bad about it

Its the best thing you can do and also the worst, and no one wants to take blame or see someone have a bad experience (getting injured, breaking down mentally etc).

Or it could be that they really regret doing it, they generally dislike it or they don't think you will fit in there. Or that you are going there for the wrong reason or without a reason.

ripped from gymnastic bodies:

>This isn't entirely accurate... 'Shin splints' are merely a 'Jo Bloggs' term for acute pain in the Ant.Tib. A less than adequate mobility in the ankle joint plus a weak base of support (collapsed arches) results in a bad relationship of how the recipricol inhibition of the lower leg muscles work.

>The biggest problem I see is a tightness of the gastroc/soleus/post.tib. This makes movements like gate, lunging and squatting a problem since with a tight calf, we are missing dorsi flexion!...This can lead to or stem from a plethora of movement compensations upstream.

>If you have tight calfs and you try and sit in a full squat position, arms folded over your knees, you will notice that you use your Ant.Tibs to stop yourself falling backwards. In this position, we get an unwanted over-activity of the Ant.tib (and peroneals) and an inhibition of the posterior calf muscles. I've had rugby players who when performing movements like the deadlift/front squat/power cleans complain of anterior shin pain just because the muscle was constantly over-active in dorsi flexion...they would temporarily relieve it by sitting on their heals and stretching the Ant.Tib.

>Now, how does this apply?? Well, to maintain the length tension relationship between muscles...you need...yes you guessed it....correct length!!...THIS IS KEY!

>if you are someone who has Ant.Tib pain, exercising this muscle is the 'last thing' you want to do! It is not under-developed, but it's overactive and compensating for bad synergy due to tight calfs, I don't like the word 'stretch' so i will say LENGTHEN THE CALF's to improve dorsi flexion AND LENGTHEN THE ANT.TIB to inhibit the over-activity.

>You will know when balance has been restored because the 'burning' and 'splinting' sensation will disappear. ;)

Their mission is to clear battlefield obstacles. Traditionally that means breaching barb wire with bangolores and breaching doors. They also are used for large scale clearing operations of dedicated minefields.

They are generally given simple explosives knowledge (outside of those who have been to master breached school, I've never met one who uses MDI or RC) and drilled to react in support of infantry missions.

The GWOT has expanded their mission to clearing routes of IEDs, mainly by driving huskies and by using arm attachments on larger vehicles to dig them up and destroy them. Engineers are trained to destroy obstacles, not diffuse them, so they are used often for mark and clear or expedient IED removal.

They generally use normal service rifles. They use shotguns in vidya for vidya gameplay reasons.

I think having a good experience or a bad experience in the military (excluding, of course, extenuating circumstances like battlefield trauma) depends a lot on what your expectations are.

Those who enjoy their time in the service went in with realistic expectations or no expectations whatsoever.
Those who have already written their entire war-story in their heads before they sign their contract receive nothing but disappointment.

Case in point, two of my friends in the Marines:
One signs an open contract out of high school. Gets a job as a refrigeration mechanic. Two tours in Iraq. Fixed air conditioners. Generally enjoyed the experience.

The other signs as 0800 (Field Artillery). Was going to be a Forward Observer, then JTAC, then join an ANGLICO unit. He had it all planned out all the way down to his nickname. It was going to be "Priest" because he called down the Thunder. (It really was that cringe.)

Yeah, well he ended up being an Artillery Operations Man, which is basically a gofer. His nickname ended up being "Rash", which, if I remember correctly had something to do with the BattleToads NES game. He was always a resentful little pill and didn't put too much effort in his job because all his plans went to shit.

Was in the army, worked intel, did deployment to AF, came home and got out. No ragrets.

Been thinking of joining guard or reserve, I do miss the uniform and actually doing shit when there was shit to be done. Honestly spent most of my time post-deployment playing BF3.

To all you indecisive fucks thinking about it - what do you have going for you right now vs the next 4 years at least? Is shit grim? See yourself "Eh, maybe enrolling in college?" Enlist. Join up, get a MOS you can transfer out into the civilian world.

Unless you are legit fucked in the head or whatnot, just fucking enlist. Basic training is the worst part, but that bitch lasts 9 weeks, and you might even have fun (I did, after week 3 when the DS started going after the dickwads by themselves instead of the whole platoon.)

Now I'm back in college, making over $3000 a month just going to fucking school. Hell, while you are in, knock out your GE requirements. Army pays for all of your college courses.

>im too fat!
I was 250lb fat fuck when I enlisted, and I still passed.

Lasts for red phase (first 3 weeks) in basic training, after that as long as you aren't a *complete* fuck-up, you won't get yelled at.
>b-b-but I dunno...
If you live at home and have no direction *at fucking all* just do it. Don't want the full commitment? Go guard or reserve, and play army once a month. Decide you love that shit? Go full time active duty.

RCP sucks for pretty much everybody. You're in a convoy crawling along at a snail's pace along a known route for hours.

Combat Engineers are going to be driving the Husky up front. That's the designated vehicle that's most likely to get blown up.

Other engineers will be in the middle in a Buffalo. That's up about the most heavily armored vehicle in the convoy. Somebody will be driving it, somebody else (NCO) is sitting in the passenger seat taking care of communications. Another guy in the back will be operating the arm. If there is a possible IED, the buffalo will drop the arm and dig up the ground like a motherfucker. If there is an IED, it either gets blown in place or EOD deals with it.

Extremely doubtful you'll be doing any Afghan or Iraq RCP missions. The GWOT is in heavy drawdown and there really aren't many land routes being used anymore by the US.

You'll likely be in garrison, meaning similar life to infantry's day-to-day in garrison, and a training refocus on conventional warfare (because the military is stupid and thinks asymmetric warfare will actually go away).

If you are interested in ordnance go EOD, they nerd out about it in much more depth and you have a far higher chance of getting attached to a spooky mission.

That link you have, when you boil it down, is about marking and clearing and deliberate minefield. It's a slow, unfun process which doesn't have enough of a cool payoff.

Engineers do get attached to infantry though, to answer your question. Usually on RCPs, for example, they are integrated with an infantry unit which provides the gun trucks.

Outside of Special Operations and a very select few Master Breacher combat engineers attached to Focused-Target-Forces, I saw almost no dismounted Engineers in Afghanistan. They were all either mounted, or stuck training the Afghans the basics of metal detecting.

No, as long as you're fully aware that the Texas Military is not the real military. If you are lucky and your CoC likes you (DO NOT ASSUME THIS IS TRUE JUST DON'T DO IT) you may spend 24 hours standing in the company area warning people about drinking underage.

But you can get in some deep shit.

Also, unless things have changed since I was there (they changed before I got there, I have a buddy who was there in 99) Prosser Village is "dry". So you can not have alcohol in the barracks even if you're of age. Prosser Village is the area where the barracks for the different MOS companies are located as well as the Muuuhhrreeeeen barracks (they have their Morse Code people there), as well as one of the DFACs, Military Clothing Sales (used to be a student bar in 99, BDE commanders daughter and her best friend got gang banged there apparently, then no more alcohol), the gym, and a shoppette. "8 Mile" is the trailer park next door where the other 35F company and some of the 35M people live. But IIRC they are considered part of Prosser and thus no alcohol.

>female enlisted

Not as much as you'd think. A lot of military women are way into people who are in control of them... that's why all women are hot for their drill instructors, no matter how ugly they are. It's a power thing.

Officers are typically 'that guy they see once in a while who is actually in charge but not VISIBLY in charge' and that doesn't seem to do it for them.

That's my theory, at least.

>junior officers

They won't give two fucks about you until you're senior to them. And officer to officer is all good relationship wise. Technically there's no rank limit either, although realistically people will think you're a douchebag if you're more than a couple O-grades apart.

>Which branch isn't the worst? I hear Navy EOD does neat stuff.
I was Army, I liked it a lot, and got an extremely varied experience out of it. I've written at length the general differences between Navy and Army EOD before, but in short, the Army has more units and thus a much wider variety of units. They have "the" NBC unit who are a bunch of scientist, protective gear wearing nerds. They have dedicated Special Operations support units. They have other small and specialized units. There are a large number of "vanilla" EOD units which are sort of all purpose; these units will vary between supporting conventional and SOF in theater, and in the states are called to deal with domestic explosive hazards, go on SOF support rotations (I had a friend in a vanilla unit that got put on rotation and a month later I saw him with a beard and jeans riding around with SOF, and month after that he was back to conventional looks and mission). In general, vanilla Army EOD units focus on defusing IEDs and preserving as much of them as possible for intelligence reasons. There are SOF support army units, but the vanilla mission is usually deliberate defusal.

Navy EOD are smaller and they are all used as SOCOM support units. They have a much higher focus on mark & clear (walking around an IED or doing the minimum to disable it) to support SOF advancing on a target more important than collecting an IED. They roll lighter and faster, and are used also as breachers and such.

The focus on post-EOD training is different. Army guys are more likely to go to in-depth IED and ordnance courses and Navy are more likely to getting shooting-heavy training. Both get some of the other, but on the whole that's how it averages.

>What are my odds of getting blown up?
Everybody gets blown up a little bit. Usually it's not too bad. You've got high odds of some hearing loss, but keeping all your fingers and toes.

you'll do fine anon. Good on ya.

Also, post deployment, we had nothing at all to do. I spent about 6 months playing fuckin vidya games and going to the gym. Got swoll as fuck too.

I personally didn't go to Korea, but some friends of mine did and had a blast. If you are a single male with no real financial responsibilities, have fun.

You get used to it really quickly, but fuck the first time it was like sticking my head in a fucking convection oven.

How many gang members will I run into while in the military?

This phrase is fairly common within the enlisted corps.

Nope, Fort Jackson. Good luck to you, might see you in Fort Huachuca in May, though.

I loved Korea. There's lots to do.

The problem with Kuwait is that it has all the downsides of a deployment (trapped in a cage with limited supply of stuff to do) plus all the downsides of garrison (no mission = infinite time for bullshit). On the plus side, you'll save a bunch of money and probably spend lots of time at the gym.
>>
>>28598390
Rip, good luck pal.

Read up. Search "military"
https://www.fbi.gov/stats-services/publications/2011-national-gang-threat-assessment

If you are becoming an officer, just assume you are talking to a gang or supremacist group member when dealing with the enlisted guys.
>>
>>28598300
You will not regret your choice. Former 35F, so I may be biased.

What made you choose F over M, G, or N/S?

anyone hear that war college podcast from reuters? is it good? i want to get into listening podcast shit

Enough. Lots of assholes join the military to escape that life, but they bring that shit with them anyone.

Plenty also join specifically to take those skills back to their gang.

I went to Jackson. Never figured out why they called it "relaxin' jackson". All my DS's were infantry.

I remember reading an article talking to the Canadian troops in Afghanistan.

One of them said that the best moment of the day was the 5 minutes after you got back to base, and could take off your vest and all your gear. The reporters agreed.

>>28598466
I already assumed there would be a diverse type of people but I can't stand being around people who act ghetto and speak Ebonics. I'm not even racist at all.
>>
>>28598521
you're going to LOVE the military

Man, I was expecting elitist shit talking on all the fatbodies, instead I gos what I have come to expect from any Ranger ever, frat house D-baggery
>>
>>28598521
There was a few that obviously came from that kind of up bringing in Basic.

After BCT, I'm pretty sure they didn't last long. They always have an attitude or a chip on their shoulder and don't react well to authority.
>>
>>28598521
Join the air force then. Army and Marines are filled with those parasites. Can't speak for Navy, I know of only 1 sailor and he's a bitch.

It was the only one open at the time, they were going quicker than wildfire. I could have been a missile launcher (forget the MOS code) and it sounded fun, but reason took over and I chose 35F, I must have done well because the Liaison dude was very happy after the fact, and said after I cleared the background check that he enjoyed our experience, and now 'move out Private!' Would you please tell me what made you choose 35F?
>>
Will they check my medical records if I have glasses? I took anti-depressants and went to the mental hospital for being "Anti-Social" and "Suicidal" all because my sister died in a car crash and I shut off everyone for a while.

Likewise, but goes double for Marines. Every marine I've met so far, apart from 2 I met while playing airsoft (you'd be surprised how many veterans play), were complete cockgobblers.

>Would you please tell me what made you choose 35F?

I originally wanted to do some combat arms job. I was 17, got a 96 AFQT, and had recruiters dick riding me and I was all "I want to do cool shit like in movies!".

A year later, when I went to MEPS, I had decided MI actually sounded like something I wanted to do but I had no clue what it actually was. So I chose CI Agent (35L). At the time 35L was still an initial entry MOS (they were in the process of switching it over to prior enlisted only). Got to MEPS, there were no slots left, so I asked what other MI MOS were left, and was told 35F.

Originally I hated it after I got out of AIT. I was still a moronic 19 year old so I wanted to shoot guns and blow stuff up (things stupid kids think combat arms guys get to do all day instead of police calling parking lots and sweeping rain).

Then I ended up going to some MOS related courses and deploying to two different commands at two different levels (J2 theater for Iraq, G2 ARCENT regional MENA) doing two very different missions. I realized not just that I was good at the job, but that I actually enjoyed it and that it was a very important job.

Seeing as there's still at least a 90% chance he was just making everything up anyway, he probably just went to bed because it was a school night.
