This is were a military like China's would have trouble, not invading and holding urban centers, but preventing troop movement and potential flanking in the vast swathes of land around them. There have been studies on this. A war for australia would involve exposed supply lines and an invasion force that could be seen from very far away. All capital cities are bordered by natural defenses and the army already occupies all strategic positions. Victory for the invaders is very unlikely without huge casualties and even more unlikely to completely conquer the country.

'Reactive' army focuses on conventonal heavy duty war fighting, adaptive on counter insurgency (mostly made up of light inf it can retooled for conventional war with enough notice)
Commando brigade and air assult brigade are very rapid reaction. (Though light inf brigades from adaptive force also rotate into being very high rediness).
