Could Australia independently repel an invasion attempt by another country, say China?

Probably. The Chinese Army is very large, but lacks blue water ships ESPECIALLY logistical ships. The Chinese Army might be able to make landfall, but the large size and relative barrenness of Australia would strain their logistics to the breaking point.

The USA with all its power and money could not hold Afghanistan, Australia is quite a bit larger, and would be very hard to hold.
>>
>>28584820
does Australia even have an army? or do they just rely on the insects and animals there to kill anyone that tries to invade?

China can't even manage to reach Australia.

At most they could supply two to three divisions

So yes.

They already had problems supplying their ships when they tried to help look for the downed Malaysian flight, and that was without anyone shooting at the five or so ships they had.

Australia could. Just not the people.

Australias defensive strategy is as follows. Allow the enemy to land. Cut his supply lines. Watch as the fuckers die of thirst. Repeat as nessesary.
Our major bases are up north and would be wiped quickly but alot of oir i.portant strategic assets and all our sf sits bellow the brisbane line. These assests are the ones most suitable to attacking logistical trains.

All you have to do is be smart about what you do. The only true predators you have to worry about are crocs, everything else will only attack you if you provoke them or you aren't paying attention.

They actually were intending up until the early 1970s to develop a limited tactical ability, that's why the F-111 was acquired and the test reactor built
The next stage was to build a plutonium power station in the ACT, to circumvent state opposition, to produce weapons grade material

Australia has around 1/3 of the known uranium deposits, and I believe 13% of global coal reserves? The only good thing about being pretty much temperate on the coast and "no rainfall for 20 years" desert in the interior. Pretty much nobody has ever been in office that said "We think we should create nuclear weapons." but there was quite a lot of research on the side especially during some of the nuclear tests in the interior.

Besides that, the size of the bush is literally retarded. Anyone who's actually been to the outback proper (very uncommon these days with all those asian weaboos in Sydney) can tell you there are plenty of places you could set up that you won't be seen from the air.

>>28586399
There's actually like 4 different reactors within the currently operating Sydney reactor, and while the old-ass one is bricked up it could still be operational (if what they said during the tour wasn't bullshit.)
>>
Just had a look at Australias military personnel and equipment numbers...

60k personnel for your entire armed forces?
Airforce is a bunch of F-18s and your Navy is basically 6 diesel subs...
59 main battle tanks?

>>
>>28586151
Australia doesn't really have modern infasturcture outside of their urban centers. Once you get a few dozen miles into the outback it might as well be 1823. This is were a military like China's would have trouble, not invading and holding urban centers, but preventing troop movement and potential flanking in the vast swathes of land around them. Not to mention the staggering logistics of feeding and arming troops stationed in what are essentially isolated oases on a desert island the size on the United State.

That said, I would absolutely 100% pay money to see a full scale north Africa style tank battle in the Australian outback.
>>

Gympie bush, I hit my face with it....pure agony. The bristles are little needle like objects that open your pores to the outside environment. Strapping tape air duct tape over the wound and ripping the offending shit out.
>>
>>28588589
The recommended treatment is to actually use waxing strips to remove as many as possible, and then literally try and disolve the remaining bristles away with diluted acid. Even then, people still report feeling slight pain years later

I don't usually carry waxing strips around with me innabush. Not a bad idea though m8.

Simple China invades, we destroy all our dams, Chinese have nothing to drink and have to import water, and all dehydrate, also the little chinks would be scared of the outback and it would be like Americas little learning experience in the Middle East.
>>
There have been studies on this. A war for australia would involve exposed supply lines and an invasion force that could be seen from very far away. All capital cities are bordered by natural defenses and the army already occupies all strategic positions. Victory for the invaders is very unlikely without huge casualties and even more unlikely to completely conquer the country.
>>
Sans memes, no. China will be a competitor for the superpower position in 20 years time and has produced more surface combatants in the last 10 years than we ever have in recorded history.

SEA and other close countries though? Absolutely.

We're making major strives to modernize and develop our military and have the following things in the pipeline
>100 F-35As
>12 EA-18G Growlers
>8 P-8 Poseidons
>10 C-27J Spartans
>2 more for a total of 7 A330 MRTTs
>7 MQ-4C Tritons
>At least 4 MQ-9 Reapers
>2 LHDs
>3 Air Warfare Destroyers
>8 AIP Submarines

Our regional rivals have pitiful force projection capabilities and their combatants are either soviet or US hand me down shit
>>
>>28588458
So fucking far from SF. They are abo chocs mainly with such a low retention rate its ridiculous.
>>
>>28584820
I mean I could see a situation where China might be able to hold some ground on the northern coast but actually occupying the whole country is just unattainable.
>>
Tactical nukes would solve all these problems, no idea why the Australian government is so pussified, fuck me even the UK has nukes.
>>
>>28590799
Mostly because the abos cried 'muh nature links' when it was suggested it be set up in the middle of nowhere, and everyone in town don't want a reactor or anything nuclear-related near them. Although they're offering $10 million to towns that let them store nuclear waste near them now, or something along those lines
>>
>>28584820
the absence of strategically significant features in the Australian interior would mean that ground forces would only be limited in movement by supplies
shit would play out like a romel fantasy

all the ctties are on the coast, so if an attacker had naval superiority (see: any more than 6 boats with/without firepower) they could shell all our major cities

>citties shelled
>populous scatters across the interior
>no supplies for invaders, would have to escort all their supplies over land in convoys
>no ability to defend captured land
>naval link venerable to interception

the only other thing of note would be the geo-pollitical implications of threatening the shipping routes in SE asia

so yes, almost anyone could overpower us

1st div is 7 infantry brigades 3rd div is 3 armoured infantry brigades (challenger, warrior ifv) there is also an independent air assult brigade. 1st div is mostly professional soldiers just with a much larger amount of reserves than previously.

The navy also provides an infantry brigade. Artillary, int, helicopters etc are in seperate brigades and attached as necessary.

'Reactive' army focuses on conventonal heavy duty war fighting, adaptive on counter insurgency (mostly made up of light inf it can retooled for conventional war with enough notice)

Commando brigade and air assult brigade are very rapid reaction. (Though light inf brigades from adaptive force also rotate into being very high rediness).

Special forces belong to the Directorite of special forces ( UKSF ) which is outside army ORBAT
