They have mandatory conscription and a general over-inflated opinion of their own military prestige (you can be fined and/or jailed for slandering the army in Turkey) due to narrow minded historical pride over the fall of Constantinople in 1453 and Gallipoli.

All memes aside (even though you are not even really looking for a serious discussion) here's pretty much the summary:

- There is conscription in Turkey, so the size doesn't really matter. They do have some elite troops though, especially ones that are actively fighting in southeastern regions.

- Equipment is mostly surplus US and German equipment. But after the invasion of Cyprus and armament embargoes, there apparently have been a lot of developments in defense industry. They do have a lot of stuff they manufacture themselves.

- Land force is decent at best, surplus German Leopard 2's, Leopard 1's, some M60 Sabras. The IFVs they have are pretty decent as far as I know, and there are combat proven vehicles like Otokar Cobra in their inventory.

- Air force is above average, mainly F-16s licensed and produced in Turkey with Peace Onyx program. They do rank high in international competitions and NATO exercises. The fleet size is not that large, but I mean this is Turkey.

- Navy is below average. They don't have an actual naval doctrine at all, they're just using MEKOs and old submarines. There are some newer stuff, but not as many or as developed to be relevant.

In average, it's decent for its size, probably could take on with any major power in Europe. If invaded they would probably be able to defend themselves, Turkey is very similar to California, lots of mountains and hard to move around, and sparsely populated.

I guess you are asking because of the Russian relations, if they actually declare war on Turkey, I'm pretty sure Turkish air force would be grounded in days, but sea landing on Black Sea coast or transporting troops in eastern regions of Turkey would be a nightmare. So it would probably be like Afghanistan or Vietnam, the war would continue for a long time.

This is a meme.
Wikipedia historical revisionism at its finest.
It makes it worse that byzantine boos and anti-turkish westerners love to make their own history on wikipedia. Even worse that the Turks dont care about the english wikipedia article.

Soon revisionists will claim Constantinople was defended by 12 girls and a dog and the Turks attacked with MBTs and MLRS. And 2 Million infantry.

Pretty damn strong. They have conscription (bad) but a very high level of discipline (good). Some would say discipline is TOO high, brutal even. The military remains a major force of secularism, not nearly so much as it used to be. So not quite so well trained as a volunteer force, but perfectly capable.

Equipment is very good, mostly western stuff. They're a NATO partner so they're used to training with top soldiers and with top equipment.

So overall I'd say they're a solid military power. Russia, for example, would be nuts to mess with them, and that's not even counting their NATO allies coming to their aid.

Basically, vs any neighbor except Russia they'd be an existential threat. They'd stomp any ARab power or Iran flat if they got into a ground war. I think the Israelis would consider them a deadly peril, too, due to numbers. OTOH, Israel is still their military ally.

Against Russia, Turkey has superior training, equipment, and personnel. Russia's advantages are numbers and nukes (even if they don't use nukes, their existence exerts power just by being there). It think a war would be terribly costly on both sides, but Turkey could probably win even without NATO intervention.

With NATO, of course, the problem reduces to the usual Russia-vs-NATO scenario, which basically Russia can't win.

>Defensive Capabilities

Pretty strong and has one of the largest professional soldier/NCO/Officer numbers in the world which makes them pretty much invulnerable against any foreign aggressors except US and I think they can put a good fight against it until they get bombed ito stone age in six to twelve months. They have no conventional military rivals in the region which can even challange them let alone be a threat to them except Russia and even they can't imagine a war in which they can win a war of agression against Turkey

Their large (compared to their economy and inland sea disadvantage) navy also provides them with sufficent force to keep their national waters safe from any possible threats as they posess the largest and most professional navy in Eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea while having the second largest overall Navy in Mediterranean.

>Offensive Capabilities and Power Projection

We can observe from their invasion of Cyprus, land and airial incursions into Iraq, war games and military equipment that their military has the capability to lunch invasions against any of their neighbours. While this is true, they do not have the military capability to pose a threat against any country they do not share a land border with.

Overall, Turkish military would be considered one of the best militaries in the world and one of the best militaries in the world regarding the training recieved by their professional branch. As they have the largest professional military personal after US in the world.

345 generals and admirals, 39.511 officers, 96.189 NCO, 22.945 specialized gendarme, 60.358 specialist, 4.218 contracted specialist and private and in total 228.566 professional members of armed forces. I believe this makes us the second largest professional military in NATO and probably in top 5 in the world

I hope to make those ''they''s and ''their'' into ''we'' and ''us'' in two years time as I graduate.

>Pilots constantly "train" with greek collegues over the med.

This doesn't do shit for our military pilot training levels.

What is important for our military pilots is the fact that we have one of the only, if not the only equivalent of American Red Flag training in world.

Anatolian Eagle is a biannual massive air exersive supported with ground and naval forces in 100plus military aircrafts including AEW&Cs, airial refueling, multiple frigates, destroyers (from US sixth fleet) and etc.

In this biannual exersize, allied forces train in hostile SAM and ground radar supression and general airal combat to fleet search and destroy missions and ground bombardment.

Contious biannual exersize is what gives TUAF it's true power, not some mock dog fights that stimulates nothing but nationalist egos in an already obsolete way of war.

>Academy soldier

Also sorry for shitty post, I really hate the fact that people site Aegean dog fights as training.

Does the military (or at least officer corps) dislike Erdogan for the Ergenekon purge or are they cowed?
>>
>>28584430

Yep but they won't try any coup from now on. Erdogan is a populist, conservative faggot but coups hurt countries more than populist conservative faggots.
>>

Do you think you'll have a full-blown civil war in the Kurdish regions or will it just simmer for some time?

Do you think the government has any designs on Mosul or northern Syria?
>>
>>28584707

>Do you think you'll have a full-blown civil war in the Kurdish regions

Hmmm..

if I have to be honest, some of the areas in Kurdish regions ARE experiencing full blown civil war. Vast majority does not but still, some do.

It is difficult to say, current stuation is the result of Erdogan's lenient policies regarding PKK and Kurdish population in general. In the past, PKK had never managed to operate in villages and towns let alone big cities but Erdogan's dream of having presidental system which forced her to ally AKP with Kurdish movement caused a ''ceasefire'' in which Kurdish elements and PKK were free to dominate the political enviroment in South East and had a sophisiticated urban presence.

The fighting before AKP was just PKK ambushes and Armed forces operations in mountains of Kurdistan. And PKK was destroyed as a fighting force between 99 and 2007 while now it is urban warfare, so yea, I think we are experiencing a civil war at minor levels.

Whether if it is going to continue or not is dependent on two things,

Does Erdogan has the political backbone to BTFO PKK into mountains and in doing so losing Kurds as an ally in Turkish politics for good?

Is PKK willing to destroy it's ''military'' presence in Turkey and compelely go civil under protection of AKP like they did before to ride Erdogan train.

Turkish army showed that as long as there was political backing of it's operations that allowed it to operate freely, they would keep PKK as a non entity in Turkish borders and cripple it's Iraqi influence between 97 and 2007 with much more inferior inventory. We only opareted second hand Cobras from US's 70s inventory and no UAV capabilities.

Now we produce our own MALE UAVs, UCAVs and under-license/improved A129s with twice as much as professionals in the army.

So yea, the answer is,

As long as Erdogan and/or PKK wants it, it will end and if they don't, it won't. It is more of a political game than a war.
>>
>>28584707

>Do you think the government has any designs on Mosul or northern Syria?

No, obsuletely no.

People may think that Erdoshit is dreaming of an Ottoman Empire 2.0 or something but he is not.

Turkish policy after Iranian revolution was to act like we occupied a place in a totally different continent than our eastern neighbours. Iraq and Syria were dictatorships who mostly allied with Soviets and Iran which just had an Islamic revolution so, everything in East of Turkey was compeletly ignored.

Hell, our only ally in the region was Israel, 99% muslim country thought that newly arrieved Jews from Europe and America were better allies than their old Imperial subjects. That's how much established Turkish political system hated to be in this geographical place and isolated themselves from it.

But AKP had other plans, they wanted to change the fundementalist dictatorships in Middle East into partners who were albeit not secular but still democratic, hence Muslim Brotherhood. AKP might be many things but they are not ''islamic'' as /pol/acks claim, Erdocunt even advocated secularism in Cairo after Egyptian ''revolution''.

They wanted to create Muslim Brotherhood controlled Egypt, Syria with Qatar at the time, democratic but still fundumentalist states but it was crushed after US decided to back KSA and UAE in this struggle which resulted in Egyptian army taking back control of government.

They have no territorial plans regarding Middle East.

I actually want Kurds to get their indipendence so we can get rid of their welfare leeching, religious bigoted asses but dumb nationalism plugs this country. And Kurds seem like they actually got smarter as they want authonomy to leech of off Turkish investment and tax payer money rather than indipendence since they have thrice/four times the birth rate of Turks.

But, it is training.
Yes, it's not red flag. But these skirmishes happen quite a bit.
When I was visiting Turkey, I would see F-16s every other day flying west from Izmir.

>Turks penetrate Greek airspace (and vice versa)
>Greeks send up fighters
>dog fight ensues
>kills and losses
>fly back to base
>debrief and talk about how it could have gone better

Dude, as far as I'm concerned, if you learn from your errors and it makes you a better pilot, then that is training.

again playing into the everything the west does is best meme. Most of your equipment are 30 years old- not that anybody in the region is any better, even Russia. Also i distinctly remember a certain caucasus country that got trained by the West but still got its shit kicked in by a certain Northern great power.

same as Egypt had before 6 day war
hell, Egyprt had even better army on paper than Turkey have now

no one can confirm it or disaprove it untill they get into real conflict

i would say Turkey will have their chance to prove themselves soon enough - war seasoned kurds from Syria and Iraq will provide some assistance to their bretheren on turkish soil and when shit will really hit the fan with kurd issue, then we'll see how mighty turkish army will handle it, since their government refuses to solve this issue peacefully and diplomatically
