Friend has both conversions..those the m8 "conversion" is more like a skin over the SL8. It truly doesn't hold ANY bonuses over the g36 platform for it exactly is. It just looks different. What was it, 800 dollars for the fake shit? This just looks neat, don't be fooled into believing this is anything more than just an SL8 with a phone skin on it to make it look like an Xm8. There's no replaced internals that would change it. In reality the G36 is superior.

I'm fully aware. That XM8 clone isn't my only SL8. I'm also in the process of converting one into a G36E (already have all of the pieces including a G36 receiver stub, just need to send the gun to Tom Bostic to complete the conversion). I have dozens of guns and like unique pieces. TBT's XM8 kit is a no-brainer for me, but I'm not pretending like it's something it's not.

When I'm done, I'm going to have 3 SL8s, two of which will be converted into clones.

>SL8-1 (gray)
>SL8-1 (G36 clone)
>SL8-1 (XM8 "clone")

I personally love the series of rifles which is why I have a few of them. The G36 one will eventually be shipped to Tom Bostic where the barrel will be reprofiled to the correct profile, a bayonet lug added, and a real G36 receiver plastic welded onto the end of the stock. The XM8 will also be shipped so the barrel can be shorted and the mag window milled + filled. In the end, my should look like pic related (lower). I'm trying to hunt down an ISM-V for a decent price right now with little luck.

Also, it's worth noting that the real XM8 was basically just a reskinned G36. Internally, it was almost a 1:1 clone of the G36. The only difference is the magwell and pistol grip was one unit instead of two. Here's a field strip of a real XM8.

>How tough does the TBT kit feel
Extremely tough with the only exception being where the forend locks into the receiver; that part is very thin. My kit actually came with a hairpin crack in it. I attribute this to the fact that it was 12 degrees (Fahrenheit) and the package looked like a JDAM had been dropped on it. I e-mailed Tom Bostic and he said he'd be able to fix it no problem, so he'll take care of it when I send it to him. When it's on the gun, it's a bit more noticeable.

The kit itself is built to super tight tolerances to the point that it's a pain in the ass to put on. So, with the exception of the thin part on the forend, it's super sturdy. Even then, I think the only reason it cracked is because the plastic was very cold and there was nothing keeping it in place (like the locking lug on the receiver). If it was on the gun, I think it would have fared much better.

>>28562465
Yep, that's me. Nothing came from that meetup because we couldn't get a place to shoot. Everybody who had land stopped contacting me when shit started getting real.
>"Hey anon, you can use my land!"
>Great, can I set a date? Do we have the land owner's permission?
>Go back and forth a couple times, ironing out details until it's looking like it's possible
>suddenly, no response

I would have preferred a, "Nah, I changed my mind" to silence. I still have everybody's e-mails in case I find a place to shoot.

i'll post about that again in the spring, you never know.
pic related, cincinnati kommandos
while we're on topic, there was a tommyboy tactical g36 conversion for sale on arfcom, i wanted that so bad but i came to my senses. $4500 for one rifle just doesnt make fiscal sense for me.

Yeah, I recall a lot of Cincinnati /k/ommandos in that thread. I'll probably bring it up again in the spring sometime, maybe start planning next month.

>$4500 for a TBT G36
Assuming it has a G36 receiver plastic welded in place of the normal SL8 receiver end, that price is about right. I've dumped around $3500 into my G36, and it's going to require another $1000-$1500 of labor to finish. Actually, $4500 is a good price all things considered.

I really need to join Arfcom and start asking around for an ISM-V. From what I heard, their marketplace is God-tier for finding rare and unusual items, usually at great prices.
>>
>>28562740
>I've dumped around $3500 into my G36
Just to be clear, that's including the SL8 used as a donor gun.

>mfw HK announces a release date for the HK293 at SHOT 2017
Well, I guess I could SBR one and have a G36k too. I still need to pick up a second FS2000 and a SPAS 12 though, so a fourth G36/SL8 clone is a bit far down the list for me.
>>
>>28562740
i dont doubt $4500 is worth it for the rifle, i just mean me personally spending that much on one rifle isnt the best idea.

>>
>>28562976
I was originally going to convert my grey SL8-1 into the XM8, but I kind of fell in love with the stupid thing which is why I now have three SL8s.
>>
>>28559895
Wait, converting an SL8 into a G36? How does that work?
>>
>>28563038
>how does that even work
You throw a lot of money at parts and labor and it turns your sporting rifle into a mediocre but iconic as fuck 'salt weapon.

Part of the process involves milling off the back and plastic welding a real G36 receiver onto it. It's quite an intensive process.
>>
>>28563056
Tell me more, I want this now.
>>
>http://www.hkpro.com/forum/hk-reference-library/124810-sl8-g36-conversion-reference-faq.html
>>
>>28563071
Okay.

>buy SL8
>buy G36 part kit (now pushing $2500)
>buy a demilled G36 receiver stub ($600)
>send SL8 to one of three people who do conversions
>pay them $1500 in labor to reprofile/cut barrel, plastic weld receiver onto your SL8 after milling off the rear of your SL8, and to mill out the SL8 magwell and fill it in

That's all there is to it. You're better off finding people selling their already completed conversions. People selling almost always take a loss because the process is so expensive; you also save the hassle of sending it in to get converted and buying parts. The only reason I didn't buy one secondhand is because I got a really cheap G36 parts kit.

If buying secondhand, be prepared to pay ~$4500 if you can find one. The problem is they don't come up for sale often, so you'll probably be better of dropping $5500-$6000 on doing one yourself.
>>
>>28563122
Adding to this, you can drastically cheapen the process by buying a stock block. This bolts onto your SL8 without any modifications, but adds an extra 2" to the LOP which is already pretty long as-is. You'll save around $1500 but it won't have that iconic look. My gun >>28559895 has a stock block/pistol grip combo so you can get an idea of what it looks like. Soon, mine will have a real G36 receiver on the end.
>>
>>28559530
came to make sure someone posted this
>>
>>28563143
The biggest deterrent for using the stock block in my conversion is that it cannot be fired with the stock folded and as you said makes it look a bit odd.
Only reason I can think of buying one is price or convenience. Demilled receivers were hard to come by last time I checked.
