I would buy a used H&R/NEF single barrel 20 guage with a nice tiger striped wood stock, and the case hardened receiver. I think those are beautiful guns. I would probably have the barrel cut down a bit, and make it a ranch gun/trunk gun. those usually run 200-300$ depending, so I might squeeze a mosin in there if I could.

Not right this second, but there were a bunch of 308 converted MAS 49/56 rifles on gunbroker for about 500 not long ago. IDK if it's a temporary drought or not.
Buyer beware, apparently the first batch had some major lemons. Mine works fine, and is a pretty cool rifle for 485 cash. And I definitely wouldn't buy the one currently on gunbroker, it's missing the grenade sights and still selling for 100 above what I've seen recently.

Then spend half of that 500 on a nice and high speed pellet rifle if you can't afford to shoot anything centerfire. You'll still have quite a bit of fun per shot, and be able to shoot till you literally can't stand to take another shot for the other 250. Also, you probably don't even need to pay to go to a real range to do it. Just make sure you get one with "nice" irons, like a gamo or something.

It's one the cheapest center fire rifles and ammunitions; yes I agree that's whole lot of fun but I'd rather save up and get something nice. Unless you can find something used or a friends willing to sell you a firearm or bullet pews.
I'm not OP. I never said I can't afford anything. I already have plenty of bb guns and pellet rifles to occupy my hands with, but those are usually left behind as I have plenty of .22lr at my dispose.

Me? I'm very different. I pretty much sloughed off any 22lr shooting for my pellet rifle instead. I pretty much only use 22lr in my sr22, never for my rifles. I'll always jump up to a centerfire rifle instead of grabbing the 10/22. That won't change unless 22lr actually becomes cheap again.
Right now, I consider it cheap for pistol practice, but overpriced and too boring per dollar for any rifle shooting.
