Howdy partners,

I'm nobody special, but I thought it would be cool to have a USA veteran thread.

Hell, any nationality. Post here.

God bless.

Does this go for Marines too?
I'm hoping to do NROTC marine option when I transfer away from my community college.
I should have a 4.0 when I transfer.

Don't ask for opinions if you don't want them.
>>
>>28550518
Not really doing it for pay. My unit isn't set to deploy for a long while, and it seems that Israel is a lot more gung-ho than we are when it comes to combat. I'm thinking Mahal. Do a year and a half, and if I hate it, I'm out.

Chill brah, I'm not asking for opinions on the IDF as an organization, but actually being in the service itself.
>>
>>28550564
Exactly what I did, and was a experience i'm glad I have now when all is said and done. You'll even be sent to a "ulpan," or hebrew school base with qt 3.14 female commanders for 3 months, so thats 3 months off practically from your actual service. And, if you want to do more, they'll ask you to sign more time.
>>
>>28550604

That seems like a pretty sweet deal. I'll assume I'd have to go through the Israeli equivalent of Basic and AIT though, righ? I'm an MP now, thinking of keeping it that way.

Yeah. But definitely convey to your recruiters that you were an MP and want to be one, and don't take no for an answer, that's how they operate; the bureaucracy over there is atrocious.

I will let you know, however, to be a IDF MP, your Hebrew has to be almost on point. Just keep telling every single commander you come in contact with.

A friend of mine even threatened to "stay in jail" until he got the job he wanted, and it worked. Heard stories of some others actually staying in the military jail until they did. (The jail is a joke by the way.)

Marine Officer Candidate here.
Complete Juniors Course.
Going to Seniors.

Have you contracted yet?
>>
>>28550386
I did NROTC for the Marines starting in 2006. I didn't get the scholarship initially, but picked one up after my first semester. Maintain high grades and get your PFT 285+ and you'll be fine. Granted you aren't a criminal or complete weirdo, at the very least you should be able to get your foot in the door as a non-scholarship midshipman.

>>
>>28550829
If you bug them enough maybe, wasn't successful in that regard. Again, the bureaucracy over there is a nightmare.

anyway, best of luck to you stranger.
>>
>>28550784
No this is a decision I've just made in the past couple of days, I haven't even started college yet.
(well, I completed one semester of community college. I didn't do as well as I would have liked, however, so I'm starting over from a new community college, then transferring to either Berkeley or Davis.)
>>28550793
This is good to hear. I'm a good student when I apply myself, so I'm confident I can get a 4.0 at my community college, then transfer for Aerospace engineering. As far as physical fitness, I'm not even close yet, but I think I can get to 285+ in two years.

Some PT advice:
MUSCLE ENDURANCE.
If you decide to go to OCS during college then at Juniors you will PT occasionally but when you do it will be intense.
-People from 50 states in one area= Everyone gets sick
-little sleep
-Humid as hell
-Hills so many hills
You want to be able to run at least under a 20min 3 mile. Average pace at OCS fartleks are 6-7 min/mile.
Functional fitness is important.
>>
>>28551002
You don't get to decide when you complete OCS in NROTC. Everyone goes the summer of their junior year.
>>
>>28551002
I started doing couch-to-5k about a week ago, I'm starting to actually enjoy running.
And I'm starting weightlifting for strength come tomorrow.

Is there any extra-curricular stuff I should do to help my chances of getting a scholarship, or even to be a non-scholarship midshipman?
Thanks man, good luck in the Marines!
>>
>>28551002
Honestly there is so much shit I could write but this guy has basically everything you should know about the experience of OCS.

>>
>>28551053
Be in leadership positions and community service.
>>
>>28551002
Also they don't do juniors/seniors. It's one 6-week course very similar to seniors, but called bulldog. ROTC kids don't congregate with the PLC types until TBS, so I wouldn't expect you to know this.

>>
>>28551051
Do they all have to do the 10 week PLC combined?
This guy could decide not to ROTC because honestly I like the fact that I don't need to do anything but stay in shape and know my basic shit like general orders, rank, history and shit.
>>
>>28551096
Ah I see. That actually seems a lot more attractive than going to OCS twice. Damn wish my school had ROTC now.
>>
>>28551077
Like job leadership positions?
Or would leadership courses work?
>>
>>28551130
Anything that involves leadership. Being a club president, taking leadership courses, or leadership job positions. They want to see good leadership, academics, and pft score.
>>
>>28551163
Alright cool, thanks for the info man.
Reading that Reddit post has me a little bit intimidated to be honest, but it's still something I want to do.
>>
>>28551130
Experience trumps all. A course or conference is better than nothing, but it will never be worth more than actually being in charge of a group of people. Remember that first and foremost you are training to be a rifle platoon commander. Marines deserve officers that already have some form of leadership experience.
>>
>>28551180
Prepare as much as you can. The first couple weeks suck but you get used to the fast pace and the sergeant instructors USUALLY (not the same for every platoon) ease up towards the end.
