Will a 10mm Glock stop a kodiak bear? Or even just a Grizzly?
Should my bear hunting sidearm be a .45 or .44 mag just to be safe?
>>
>>28547331
A bear was taken down with 5.45x39mm up here before, and even .45.
>>
>>28547331

Snub nose 460 or 500S&W would probably be my preference.

I'd like to believe 9x25 Dillon would work but I don't think anyone's really tested it. On the other hand you could dump a 17 round mag and modest recoil as opposed to teeth chattering, 5 shot clunky ass revolvers.
>>
.44 mag is pretty much the standard in terms of the pistol cartridges power you'll want to have in case a grizzly gets mad at you.
>>
.454 Casull
>>
>>28547331
you dont think 17 9mm would do it? I would think the noise alone would scare it off
>>
>>28547383
Never heard of this round i will need to do some research, thanks senpai
>>
>>28547421
along that line, 31 22mag from a pmr30...its otherwise such a convenient hiking gun
>>
>>28547421
Don't you guys think a hungry Kodiak wouldn't be frightened by just a loud bang?
>>
>>28547445
a series of 17 really loud bangs and bullet wounds.

now you sound like one of the faggots who think you need a 50cal for target practice
>>
>>28547496

Everyone needs a .50 cal for target practice.

Sooooo your saying that a very hungry Kodiak will be scared off by bangs and bullet holes...what if the holes don't even penetrate deep enough to hit organs? Wouldn't instinct tell it to kill the thing attacking it?
Sorry for all the oddball questions, I am very new to handgun ownership and want to educate myself. Weird, right?

Depends on what 45 we are talking about, fuccboi.
>>
>>28547331
Pepper spray is far more effective than handguns against large bears. Their skulls are too thick for a pistol round to reliably penetrate. And yes, that does include .44mag. .500S&W is even a little iffy.
>>
>>28548010
>>28548028
Long Colt best .45
Have a Thompson Contender that fires it and its a blast.
>>
>>28547974
No
But I'm not a giant fucking bear
A 9mm would just piss a grizzly off. Hell, a .44mag would just piss a grizzly off.
Pepper spray is the best option for defense against bears. That's not to say you shouldn't also carry a handgun for thinner-skinned threats like wolves or lions.

Anything less than this or an Obrez you have bitch wrists or you just really want to emulate Grizzly Adams.
>>
Isn't 9mm notorious for over penetration in normal circumstances so wouldn't it be ideal for a bear? you gotta get through that fur/bone/meat
>>
>>28548071
With your logic Pepper spray would just piss it off like the pistols do
>>
>>28547937
10mm will penetrate if you get an aftermarket barrel on that glock and put in some hardcast buffalo bore rounds. Open-minded people are calling it the ultimate side-arm for the great outdoors.

But it's a leap of faith to take 10mm out against kodiaks, I would trust it against grizzlies though. Research the glock model 40.
>>
>>28548146
The difference is that with pepper spray the bear can not see or even breathe properly.
>>
>>28548102

FMJ 9mm WILL NOT penetrate a bear's skull. Get a magnum load in hardcast.
>>
>>28548174

Bullet to the brain means it can't even move properly.
>>
>>28548202
See:>>28548181
>>
>>28548174
a bullet does the same thing, only it can have a adverse effect of paralysis.
>>
>>28547331
10mm will take out a solar system using buffalo bore hardcast.
>>
>>28548217

Yes, I am the same person. If you want a bear gun, get the old reliable .44 mag or bigger, or try out the glock with an aftermarket barrel. I have done a lot of research on this because in my area, there are cougars and coyotes that would love to eat my little dog when I go out hiking. I don't carry a round that big but when I move to more bear-infested areas I'll probably pick up that glock if no one else is making a big 10mm.
>>
44 magnum is what the Alaskan department of wildlife (I think) recommends as far as handgun calibers go.
>>
https://www.buffalobore.com/index.php?l=product_list&c=108

this is what buffalo bore recommends
>>
>>28548202
you've never seen a bear skull have you?
>>28547331
if you're hunting bear i'd assume you have a rifle already suitable for killing said bear.
why do you need a sidearm that would be more difficult to aim, and leaves the barrel much slower?

>>28548022
never even heard of helsing but from your picture i bet its some retarded bullshit animu version of van helsing. which no, .454 casull was not heard of from that. back to /a/
>>
>>28548272

Not everyone is hunting bear when they are attacked, and won't be carrying a rifle. Read this >>28548263
if you can't understand what a bullet will do to a bear's skull and brain.
>>
>>28547331

>>28548272
it's not particularly retarded as far as anime goes. it's kinda badass. there's a balling abridged version on youtube.
>>
>>28547974
No. No I am a human being weighing in at 150 lbs
>>
>>28548331
well the op is asking about a sidearm for carry for bear hunting. that would assume you are actively hunting bear while carrying that sidearm.
and statistics really don't mean anything, the slightest tiniest anything can effect what your shot does. the bullet hits the skull at some exact spot, in some exact angle, and it hits off the side and wobbles around under its scalp.
tons of factors that impact a killshot to a damaging shot.
also remember an actual charging grizzly is like giganigga 3000 on pcp and won't even feel that hit him/her
>>
>>28548146
No, my 14 year old friend, because bear's noses are so incredibly sensitive that pepper spray is blindingly painful to them. They can't see, and they can barely breathe, much less attack you.
>>
>>28548350
eh, just never could get into anime because of all the retarded faces they feel the need to have the characters make.
>>
>>28548407
I wouldn't go so far as to say "retarded"; it's a cultural difference. An additional reason (and also the reason for the big heads and eyes) is that when you're filming a person it's easy to show the subtle emotional signals that we're all used to seeing, whereas a drawn character will never have that level of detail so the animators need to exaggerate those cues for the viewer to pick them up properly. You see the same exaggeration - although in a slightly different manner and to a different extent - in western animation.
>>
>>28548022

I just don't see how hands could fit around a .454 magazine.

Can anyone confirm or deny?
>>
>>28548563
There are no production .454 semi-autos of which I know; depicted is a fictional weapon from an animu wielded by a paranormal entity. I think that there are only revolvers available irl.
>>
>>28548593

I know that.

I'm just curious if the .454 1911 hardball would actually be grippable by average hands.
>>

I carried a 10mm in Alaska while I was out never had to use it in anger though. I had it for moose and wolves rare yes, but still a concern. For bear I had spray. Had a a buddy in the wildlife troopers. He told me that spray stops bears 99.9 percent of the times it's used guns are way less effective at stopping them immediately. As soon as the orange mist hits that big wet nose he's out of the fight and looking for the nearest exit. Moose it just pisses them off more hence the glock. Seriously fuck moose they are ass holes.

This right here is exactly the reason I hate anime.
That, and the over-the-top action bullshit.
>>
In my experience, .44 mag is probably the most popular handgun caliber for bear defense, but tons of people are switching over to .454 Casull in a chest rig as a last ditch emergency weapon.

Also, bear spray is probably your best bet if that fucker is already within 30 yards. And I mean actual bear sparay, as in designed for bears, not humans. Best practice, be aware and make noise. Most bears want nothing to do with humans.

I love muh 10mm, but if I was going into grizzly territory, I'd want something like hot .357 magnum or .45 LC, or a rifle. All we have in my state is black bears though, and they run away if you look in their general direction.
>>
>>28547331
Honestly enough of anything could kill a grizzly but you need penetration if you want to kill it before it kills you. If your against carrying a rifle. Get a magnum caliber. 10mm with the right loads will do, but .45 acp or .45 colt I would avoid altogether. 357 magnum with a 4" or longer barrel with the right loads will also do. And pretty much anything above that will do. Look for premium quality ammo. FMJ or hardcast lead. Hollow points loose to much penetration.

I'm alaskan, when I'm worried about black bears I carry .357 with 180 grain hardcast. If Grizzlies are in the area I carry a marlin 1895g 45/70. Don't fuck around with grizzlies, they are smart territorial death machines. They will most likely detect and avoid you before you know they are there. But if you find yourself close to one they probably have an interest in fighting you, if you manage to surprise it be prepared to shoot as well.

>Tl;dr carry a rifle.
>>
>>28547331
you just said it... To be safe. That's the whole point anon if you think a .44 will keep you safe get one, don't argue with ifs ands or buts. When it comes to your personal safety get what you think will be the most suited and learn how to use it.
>>
>>28548563
I have very large hands, I could probably grip it
>>
>>28553566
Pretty much any rifle .223 and above can penetrate to the vitals at point blank range. Grizzlies have been killed with 5.45 before.

Not a scoped hunting rifle though. You want to be able to fire fast so a semiauto, lever action or pump action.
>>
>>28548953
He has probably just seen you shoot which is why he would tell you that obviously false information. Are you actually alaskan? Or from anchorage. I've heard way to much canned bullshit from city folk "alaskans".
>>
>>28549144

>>
>>28553909
Look here fucker, some of us are stuck in this concrete hell against our will. Not everyone in anchorage is a prius driving fag.

Anyway, not the guy you're talking to, but I think the issue is statistics.

>Most bear mace uses are on bluff charging or non agressive bears
>Singe it's non leathal California transplants use it every time they see a bear shaped lig and report it as working because the bear would have ran if you yelled loud enough.

>Guns only get used and then reported by people that knew they were about to be mauled, or people actively being mauld.
>So they appear 'less effective' since the reports are predominantly of actual attacks not "eeeeek a scary bear!" *Fwooooosh* "Oh thank god I had this spray bullshit"

TL;DR Californians fuck everything up with a basic lack of understanding

This thread made me think about this shit a little more. Bears have been getting bolder and bolder over the past 5 or so years near me, I get calls from neighbors several times a year now to get my pets in because they saw a bear walking around down the road. I don't even know if any of my weapons would stop one. If I unloaded a full clip of 30-06 into one with my garand, would that stop it?
