This is fucking embarrassing. If this had happened to Imperial Japanese Army, they would have committed seppuku by now.

Anyway, what went wrong?

Why is starting WW3 preferable to accepting arrest because you made a mistake and getting released shortly after once the Iranian government figured out what happened? They were treated well and since this was the scene of a possible crime, of course they took evidence photos in case it became a big incident. Stop acting like children.

Someone fucked up. Either it was an officer calculating the amount of fuel needed, or a maintenance boot not fixing something right or an officer not inspecting something right. When the navy finds out who they're either getting demoted, or told to retire so that whatever happened doesn't happen again.

And I guarantee you that had those guys fired on Iranian boats, they would have started a pissing match that would had gone all the way up to the CoS and Obama. Which is a no-no especially if they had started a direct conflict between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

I imagine the exchange went something like this

>Iranian boat: "American vessel! You are in Iran's sovereign waters in violation of XYZ! Prepare to be boarded!"
>Navy boat: "We are adrift due to a malfunction in our engines, we did not intend to enter Iranian waters, can you assist"
>Iranian boat: "Our orders are to board your ship and detain your crew"

After this goes around in circles for a bit, Navy captain sees he can either comply with the Iranian dickwaving or start a fucking war. He decides not to start a fucking war.
>>
>>28547545
Things break. If things didn't we wouldn't have mechanics and engineers.
>>
>>28547588
Obama wanted them to shoot at the Iranians so he could intact martial law and become president forever.
>>
>>28547558

I know this: something on that boat broke. Whatever part broke required one of three components to fail:

1. the person building the part
2. the person repairing the part
3. the person inspecting the repaired part

Since the part likely passed inspection before it left the factory, some maintenance person or inspection officer screwed up, which in turn caused the part to fail, which in turn left the boat stranded in Iranian waters.

Yes, someone can be blamed here. That is how the entire military is setup especially the navy. Someone didn't do their job right and now they are going to be quietly demoted or discharged, as an example to their peers.

I find it hard to believe that with all the GPS equipment and other navigational aids that (1) they could get lost and wind up in Iranian waters, and (2) neither was rigged for a tow line.

Apparently I have company. Pic related.
>>
>>28547590
And the Iranians captured the sailors, saw that in fact the boat was experiencing problems, FIXED it for them and released them.

Iranians had the tactical advantage at that point. Probably had them massively outgunned at that point. Resistance would have resulted in a lot of dead Americans. There wasn't an open conflict here, Iran went out with the goal of capturing Americans. So at that point there options are fight, surrender, or drive away and bet they won't shoot you (impossible to do if there was a malfunction of some kind).

The only real fuck up here was that officer apologizing. Clear violation of his code of conduct unless he was ordered to make that statement. He should be held accountable.

>What if two Iranian attack boats showed up in San Francisco harbor? You think we would EVER let them go?

1. Since the scenario is literally impossible, and cannot be tested, the cut of your jib is an unfalsifiable hypothesis. You just present the scenario as if could only go the way you are implying, with no way of proving or disproving it.

2. The Russian were in a habit of flying over Alaskan airspace with bear bombers, which considering that they can carry nuclear payloads, they would present a much more clear and present danger than a couple of patrol boats. To the best of my knowledge, we never forced them down, paraded their crews in front of tv cameras, and ripped through their equipment for intel.

3. You assume the Iranians are not fucking lying, which considering that they have tried multiple times to grab western troops in international waters, and succeeded at least once, I would think people would be skeptical about their version of events. The same thing happened with the Hainan island incident, the chinese crashed their jet fighter into our slowpoke prop driven aircraft, and people over here just ASSUMED it was Murrica's fault. Apparently blame Murrica first is a real thing.
>>
did they get released or should I expect a phone call?
