Hi, /k/. I saw this rifle at a garage sale this morning and picked it up for $75. The owner couldn't tell me what it is and I don't know either. The only mark I can see on it says 1942. The woman who sold it to me gave me a small bag of bullets that go to it I guess so one is in the picture if that helps.

These are the only markings I could see. The number 2739 is stamped on a bunch of places over the gun like on the very back end, and on the bottom and top part as shown in the pic. Other than that I don't see anything else.

It is a mosin, but the sickle and hammer means it was produced by the izhevsk company. The two most common nagants are made in Tula and izhevsk

Mosin Nagants M91/30. it fires 7.62x54r and from your other post I can see that it was made in Izhevsk in 1942. Congrats, your rifle was a war time production and most likely used in battle although the quality will reflect this.
Now on the price you lucked out. Most mosin will run you about $180-$200 so $75 is a great deal.

There are numbers on the bolt (part with the handle), buttplate (shoulder of the stock), receiver (top), and floorplate (bottom of the magazine).
If the numbers are missing, they are replacements.
One last question, /k/ - when I go to basecoat the wood with primer, should I go black or white spray? I want to paint the gun red but I want it to show up really bright blood red but not pastel. And is there an easy way to make stencils?

To build on this, if you use ammo with corrosive primers, use hot water to get rid of the salts left behind by the primer before you clean the gun.
The water will dissolve the salts and the heat will help the remaining water evaporate.
Dude that gun is special. I know guys who would pay 1000 bucks for it. Put it on gunbroker for 1500 and take your best offer.
