It's finally winter and I need some gear that I can wear around campus and not look autistic. I usually wear sweat pants and a hoodie, but it's getting cold enough to warrant more than that. What are some nice jackets and pants in olive or fde?
Found this rothco one but rothco is usually shit.

At The Front tanker jacket. I got mine with the fleece lining because I already have enough wool items to worry about. You're absolutely able to operate in this shit. Plus, no obvious tactical shit all over it.

If you go to atthefront. com and look in the section for US jackets and field coats you'll find it soon enough.

Austrian surplus is really nice but not overtly milsurp to most people. Of they know what it is, you'll probably get a compliment at worse.

Been wearing icebreaker merino long underwear, Duluth Trading Fleece lined quick dry pants, Smartwool longsleeve merino t shirt, Mammut hoodie, mountain hardwear dome perignon hat, and and an arcteryx thorium.

Shit is comfy as fuck, layers down quickly and easily. If its windy, add a hardshell.

I wear a ratty flecktarn parka around my campus, and I don't look autistic
I look fucking homeless
I have an unkempt beard, ratty ass boots, jeans that have seen a lot of wear, wool gloves, a grey beanie, and an uncanny resemblance to Varg
I had a fuccboi come up to me and put coins in my full cup of coffee while I was sitting on a bench waiting for a friend. He didn't say anything, just had this shitty 'I feel good about myself for spreading social justice' smile on his face as he walked away too, which pissed me the fuck off
But it's surprisingly good at camouflaging you from muggings or attention whatsoever. Everybody ignores homeless people, and I've gotten away with a couple trespassing incidents in dilapidated buildings because police just chased me off like I was homeless
Shit's crazy
>>
>>28510171
I bought this from the chinese company who makes it for $40 off of aliexpress. For a $40 jacket its not too bad. Stitching is mediocre, zippers are cheap, but what do you expect for $40.

down side is you only get two pockets and you need more under layers. The best thing to have for winter is a good outer shell then lots of lower layers you can take off to adjust comfort. I like this shell because I can easily pack it into it's own pocket. It's breathable enough to use all seasons. I guess they added the logo, on mine it's all black. Milsurp gear is not the best outdoor tech. The best stuff is made for the private market for hikers and campers that spend more money than the government. Try asking /out/

Sounds wonderful. I still haven't tried Red Wing boots, I bought a pair of Thorogoods last year after I wore out a few pairs of their work shoes, comfy as fuck in the sole but I want a padded tongue. Overall can't complain

There aren't many shops near me that sell Carhartts (in Dallas, of all places), but the few that do, like Academy/Cabela's just have the basic tan colored ones that were super popular with the rednecks/kickers I grew up with in a small town. Carhartt actually has a fuckload of products, but I'm iffy about ordering clothes online sometimes, especially some of their higher end jackets. I gambled on my Detroit and it worked out, but now I want something even warmer that has a hood, but I'm scared about spending $120 online and having to deal with sending it back if it doesn't fit me right

Farmer here.

They last pretty good, but they don't last 10 years of actual use.

Usually the zipper rips free of the rest of the coat in 3-4 years, which is fixable a set number of times, but the coat is almost always completely trashed by year 7.

Carhartt was the best a farmer or outdoorsman could get...30 years ago. But they're still being made the way they were 30 years ago while having quadrupled in price ($160 everywhere they're available locally here). There's better out there now.

Honestly, here where I live there's a significant used market for them and they can be had cheaply that way. That's what most people around here do. That or the factory-seconds outlet an hour away.

Depends. Do you constantly go barreling through hedge (osage orange), black locust, and multiflora rose?

If no, a Columbia shell jacket+liner should be about $140, last a good decade, and be both waterproof and breathable (with namebrand goretex).

If yes, Robinson Outdoors makes a scent-killer bomber jacket with a brushed Cordura shell, quilted Thinsulate insulation, and knockoff Goretex for around $110 but has the same fit issues as Carhartt (all the cuts are designed for beer-bellied old men wearing overalls+coveralls). Also only available in fuddcamo. But has excellent zippers.

Occasionally you can also find a Banded MST wader jacket+Primaloft liner on sale/clearance for around $160. Removable, 3-way hood, good cuffs, excellent zippers, Goretex shell, thin but superwarm zip-out liner (yay Primaloft), chest handwarmer pockets. Available in OD, mud brown, and 50 different fuddcamos.
>>
>>28515902
Another option would be one of the cloud-grey US milsurp Level 7 poofy coats. They're like $80, super warm, super durable, but only DWR and not actually waterproof. Best thing about them is they don't overtly look military and have a roll-away insulated hood.

Even down to the -20 bullshit we had last year, though I had to layer it with a thermal. I wouldn't operate in it, but it works and doesn't look completely shitty with sweatpants. But let's face it, if you're wearing sweatpants, you don't care if you look shitty.
