Hey /k/, My son has been shooting the .22 LR for a while, but he wants something "Bigger" He's just turned 14, and is quite short, only 4'7. I have an SKS, Mosin Nagant, and 30 ought 6. I dont thing the 30O6 would be good, nor the Nagant, but the SKS seems ok, what do you all think.

Your SKS is more than sufficient for your needs. Recoils like a 30-30, which is what my dad moved me to when I was a kid.

I'd probably say to move to an AR-15 with collapsible stock. I've always liked how a 20" upper looks with a carbine stock. Also gives LOP's suitable for children & manlets up to 6'+ men.

yeah the sks is an excellent choice. 7.62x39 doesn't recoil much and is an easy step between .22lr and the longer 30 cal cartridges. as mentioned, you could also look at getting an ak platform since it fires the same round

OP in no way am I trying to insult your way of parenting, you know your child the best, but I have a very similar story. When I was around 15 years of age I was 5'2", and was medium build. I just got into guns in seventh grade, and was trying to soak up as much knowledge as possible. All I ever shot was .22 and 20 gauge. I have only shot a mosin once at a range from some kind old man and It had a lot of felt recoil at the time, but that didn't make any less fun. My dad didn't want me getting an ak, sks, or even a mosin. He thought that it was too much for me even with proper stance and everything. I longed to get an ak so bad, one christmas my dad got a Hungarian fixed stock parts kit and told me if I can build it I can shoot. Never the less I was the happiest person alive, but I had a mission, I was gonna build the shit out of that ak. I did all the research day and night, and read many books and went to local gunsmiths for any questions, and ordered all of the tools to build it. By the first day I had built the sexiest ak I have ever seen even to this day. Building this was hard work for 15 year old because of the mass amount of knowledge I had to quickly obtain to build it. Not only did I want to build it I wanted to understand it, know the basic functions of any gun and how they operate. Within that timeframe I gained a lot of knowledge that I still use today. When my dad let me shoot it for the first time, it was the second most glorious day of my life, right behind loosing my virginity to an easy 10/10 german exchange student (damn was she tight). But I am thankful for building it because of the knowledge I obtained from it, also it got me use to the ak platform and helped me control recoil a lot better once I just shot it some more. Besides OP, your son is going to hit puberty and skyrocket in height and build. So the way I see it the faster you get him use to a normal fighting weapon, the faster he could use it safe and effectively.

Find one on sale and you'll love it. I'm so glad I waited for mine to go down to $550. Length of pull, weight and overall length are perfect for a manlet.
If you're 6'2 like me you'll probably find the length of pull is just a hair too short - like a AR with a collapsed stock.
Take a look at 'Limb Savors' they slip right on to the stock and they offer pretty good cushion. Got one for my K31 because I always shoot it after practicing trap and skeet for a few hours. It helps out a lot.
I don't see a problem with a SKS. The weight "feels" more distributed than a mosin to me. Might be easier for him to hold it, and the stock length of pull seems like it would fit his size better than a 30.06.
You seem like a cool dad, perhaps you two could assemble an AR15 from scratch together. I wish my dad would have done that with me. Kudos for getting your kid into shooting.
