I had the... displeasure of shooting an Ohio Ordnance Repro BAR and it was fucking painful. I lift on a daily basis, but aiming that thing whilst standing was fucking awful. Prone and benched the thing was fine, but god damn. Even though it was so heavy, the recoil was still pretty substantial.

Good deals can be had, but they're a crapshoot to build. The parts aren't standardized, although there are some more major players, so you have to be careful what you buy, and your options are limited. I'm working on trying to do a PSA PA-10 on the cheap, and I'm in for $450 so far; upper, lower, barrel, buffer kit, stocks. PA-10s are mostly DPMS standard parts, proprietary upper and lower, and a few proprietary lower parts.
I still need upper and lower parts kits, gas tube and block, muzzle device, and a BCG. Straight retail, it'd be about $400 for the rest. So, by the time you're all done, unless you're willing to play the long game and wait for sales, you may well spend $1k+ for an entry level AR-10.

I am building an Imbel FAL from a kit I picked up on an Imbel upper receiver. It has been anything but cheap. I have upwards of 1500 into the build including all of the tools, parts, replacement parts, shipping and measuring devices I have purchased. Battle rifles are not cheap weapons
