Anyone know/seen it happen/thought about it?

It explodes, knocks out the power for half a block, a power guy comes out to fix it, sees it was shot, files a police report. Then, you get arrested and thrown in prison for malicious destruction of city property
>>
In short, nothing good.

Longer answer, probably you'll just knock power out for your street/block/area, and when the power company comes to repair it or check any cameras that might have caught you they will report weapons damage to the authorities. If caught, you will go to jail.

There is a small chance your round(s) might expose a cable running AC and drag it to a ground, in which case many sparks and likely an explosion will follow. You will probably die.

Back when power lines used to run along highways they put tanks up on all the power lines so drivers going through low population areas would be able to access fresh water or top off their radiator if they were overheating.

Sucks they really used to plan shit out back then.

>>

How the hell do they manage that? The only copper that's accessible without climbing or using a bucket truck is the ground wire and rod, which is copper clad and also (unless it's some big fucking wire with some serious problems along the line) won't blow if you cut it. Also, being copper clad, it's worthless and will get your ass laughed out of the scrapyard

Kek, my dad works for First Energy and after the plant he worked in got shut down they sent him to a call center to monitor outages and dispatch line crews. The area he monitored was West Virginia and part of western Maryland, and apparently this shit happened all the time. WV was especially bad for car-pole collisions, and occasionally the residents wouldn't even report it.

Example:
>be my dad at work a year or so ago
>notices an outage in an area that wasn't reported by customers, dispatches a line crew
>fucked up transformer near some guy's house
>line crew asks if they had power and if not, why they didn't call
>"eh, I figured you guys would realize it and send someone out eventually"
>this is not an uncommon occurance and outages in WV can last 2-3 days before being noticed by the company
>one time it was out for a week but the people effected had generators so they didn't care
>sometimes the meter readers are the ones that discover people are without electricity

Also, that's a verbatim quote from the WV guy, my dad says it was a really common mentality there (he's since left that office job to go back to a power plant). He hated it though, the customers in the area he monitored destroyed shit frequently and he was supposed to (as per First Energy guidelines) approve everything the line crews did before they did it (even though they knew exactly what to do, and he knew they knew what to do; most of the time, he ignored that rule).

Wow, that post got really off-topic.

It's not my job to fix stupid shit like that, but since the foreman has such a huge boner for storm and trouble calls, he requested that our crew be first on call for shit like that. Till then, I wanna be as low-key as possible.

>>
>>28496798
The oil inside begins to leak out, it over heats and catches fire assuming the power company doesn't catch it soon.
You then lose power and get put in prison when caught.
You also would not be able to post on 4chan.
>>
Electrician here, depending on the transformer it may or may not be filled with oil. Depending on damage done it will stop working because the circuit is broken, the transformer will short and losee power, or the transformer will break down from heat after the loss of fluid and short a winding and lose power. So really the only thing that will happen is people will lose power and the poor fuckers who have to fix it will hate you.

Not him but I do linework for a living and if that shit dropped into another phase, there would be a fucking gigantic explosion and the line would probably melt into a bunch of other shit. Depending on where that is and how hard it sags, you'd have a horrifying grass/forest fire on your hands
>>
>>28500569
you have idiots at times try to take the bus bars and service cables from big switch-gear and panels. unless its dead when they grab at it they cook real good.
>>
>>28501011
When shit goes phase to phase it will usually produce some spectacular fireworks until the amperage rating 0f the circuit is met. Depending on the sensitivity of the cicuit protection it will trip out really quick or low a fuse. I'm not sure but I don't thin high voltage distribution is particularly sensitive.
>>
>>28501011
Flash crack and bang. No power to parts of the grid. Don't be near it or it can arc to you

The real old transformers contain an oil that is rich with PCB's. That is a chlorinated hydrocarbon like DDT and Chlordane. Very toxic and does not go away once in you. May cause a whole bunch trouble if you shoot that transformer.

They recomended 10 feet for residential and 20 to 30 for high voltage, and in most circumstances you will have to wear a Faraday cage suit to work with this stuff. It's pretty dope, look it up.
>>
My dad was doing electrical work and left the face plate off a light switch. I didn't know this and without looking I went to turn on the light so I could see when walking down the stairs.
My hand slipped inside the light switch and touched a live wire.
I remember feeling the current go through my arm, my body tensed up, then I remember falling slightly forward, from there I went unconscious and then I woke up at the bottom of the stairs.

I do not fuck with electrical shit.
>>
>>28501081
you have a arc zone about 4-6 ft around each of those cables. i would stay about a good 50 ft from the pole if you want to feel the arc blast and not get hurt.
>>
>>28501119
Yeah it sucks, I got hit today in fact. It was only 120 but I never get used to it.
>>
>>28496989
Some transformers have an insulating oil inside, to my knowledge frequently plain jane mineral oil.

I assume without that you would get arcs from one coil (is that the proper terminology?) to the other and possibly an explosion.

Transformers are fucking LOUD when they blow.
>>
>>28501081
It depends on the voltage, height of the tower, humidity, weather (has it rained, are you wet). Its not a good idea. Plus the high voltage lines are something that will cause a big show and definitely light anything combustible in the area it touches. If your Inna woods prepare for a forest fire

Unions for my line of work are fucking necessary. They keep the bigger power companies at bay and fight to stop them from making us do shit by unit and rushing us, because that's how people get fucking killed- trying to meet some retarded quota for the day. I appreciate that I have a group behind my back that'll tell a company "no, fuck you, we're gonna take the extra 30 minutes to glove and sleeve up before every pole we do, because that's the safe way to do it and if that means we only get 4 poles done a day then we only get 4 poles done a day and you can fucking deal with it".

There's a reason non-union line jobs have a lot more accidents and issues in general. Half the shit I do is fix what the rat companies fucked up in the first place. Fuck you if you think having a group behind you that fights for your rights as a worker and human being is bad.

He gave me the choice of doing it or I don't have a job there anymore.
I left and when I called our union rep she had this bitch ass sarcastic tone and offered to come with me and hold my hand and talk to the manager about how he made me feel.
I just hung up on the cunt.

If we weren't mopping the floors, hanging pricing tags, pushing in carts, or taking the old food from the Leann Chins that was in the store to the rancid, sun baked garbage compactor, we were bagging groceries.

Our position was covered by, IIRC, the United Food and Commercial Workers union.

Because in linework, the threshold for being killed and killing everyone around you in an instant is a lot shorter. It's good to have a union at your back telling a company that you're not going to work by quota. The companies aren't specifically saying "no you can't glove and sleeve up or have a tailboard for every pole", but the numbers they want per day make it impossible to achieve within the workday without skimping on safety measures.

Again, I reiterate- in this job, if you make a mistake up in the primary, not only are you dead, but everyone around you is dead as well. Not injured, not badly hurt, but dead with a capital D. Electricity does not fuck around for a single second. The fact that companies try to push rat workers to go fast and get x amount of shit done a day is ridiculous and dangerous. They push profit before safety and if you cannot fathom why that is retarded, you're a lost cause and I would never want to work with you in my trade.

Every time it shows I'll see a car in the ditch nearly every quarter mile on the highways. I've taken to packing a big shovel and tow straps in my jeep to assist the hapless fucks now.

You do t need to tell me how dangerous electricity is senpai, I work with 480 daily and 13.8 on the regular. An arc flash is a possibility with nearly every job I do, and getting blasted with heat the equivalent of the surface of the sun. I understand why you think the way you do but there is a way to do it without unions, like I said, osha for construction. They protect a worker.

I pulled a guy out of a car once.

Left as soon as I could since I was going to run late for work.

The guy said he was heading to a showing for a house, I'll guess he was the realtor, and was running late so he was speeding.
The guy lost control, crossed over oncoming traffic, went off the road and the car impacted the ground, went airborne, flipped, and spun around coming to rest on the passenger side.

The vehicle hit the ground so hard it cracked the radiator, visibly bent the frame in the front end, and cracked the beads on the tires on driver's side, it hit so hard it carved into the frozen earth.

well, there goes my plan for harvesting oil in the event of the happening. Not like i could lose power if there is no power to be had

They use mineral oil inside the transformer to cool it.

I worked for a general contractor who's own office building did not meet OSHA standards. I'm talking faulty wiring, black mold everywhere, even the main office, and questionable construction (I was just an estimator, but I doubt using salvaged materials from demo jobs was super safe).

You really fucking need second and third opinions on stuff.
>>
>>28506744
Oh and I forgot to add that this GC was able to get away with this because he was drinking/golfing buddies with the local OSHA rep. I even reported it but nothing got changed and no OSHA folks investigated it.

Same town had the largest restaurant owner literally fucking the health inspector and I have seen that place leave uncooked chicken on the floor all day (dating a waitress there, got to be in the kitchen alot).

I WISH there were unions here, or something besides corrupt government officials. I know unions aren't immune to corruption, but that extra layer of "protect workers and consumers" would be nice, plus it'd make total corruption of the system, like that town has now, more difficult to do and to hide.

Oh man, I lived in Sacramento for a few years, and was blown away by how often it happened there. It was rare that a day passed without the news featuring somebody crashing into something stupid, and there was one street near me in particular where poles got taken out every few weeks like clockwork.

The general level of driving in that area is absolutely appalling, I don't know if it's that they have high rates of drunk or high driving or what, but it turned me into a super-paranoid driver. It's crazy, you drive around and almost every car on the road, even ones that are almost brand new, has some kind of body damage. I was so glad to own a sporty car, because it saved my ass a whole bunch of times, either by being able to accelerate out of situations or by having good enough brakes and tires to stop before getting taken out by red light runners and stuff.
>>
>>28511536
Yeah, I was just being a dumbass with a broken HID bulb, most of the stuff I work on is 480 and 13.8kv.
>>
From a lineschool queer.
You knock out power, most likely cause an arc, could cause thousands in damages and you get arrested/fined for destruction of city property depending on how your electricity is brought to you.

Not as bad as SC.
>everyone drives 10-20 UNDER the speed limit
>everybody still wrecks
Turn signals are a foreign thing there. If you are an out-of-stater and use your turn signal you will legitimately freak people out badly enough to cause a crash.

Also, almost nobody uses headlights. Ever. There are actually body shops that specialize in disabling the auto-headlights on newer cars.

how's it feel to waste money just to get into the apprenticeship as a 2nd or 3rd step
>>
>>28500569
They find a riser pole which has power going into a conduit, they cut the conduit and try to steal the copper that is inside insulation.
>>
>>28513407

>>
>>28496798

>>28513435
All the guys I know coming up from lineschools say they came into the apprenticeship a few steps higher. Seems like a waste of money to me but if you got a different story, I'm interested in hearing it. You rat or union?

>>28513410
imagining that is hilarious as fuck
>>
>>28513508
Imo I don't think its a waste if you pay for a good school, you'll know more going into the industry, you wont look like a complete idiot to the company, cpr and first aid certs, cdl, rescue certs, and academics, you look a hell of a lot better on paper, especially if youre forst gen lineman.
I used to work for a telecom company out near the beaches then I went union and currently waiting for calnev to reopen. So just working construction in the mean time because fuck underground tech right now.
>>
>>28513558
I guess I'm biased because I got my start in the trade by grunting for a little while before putting my application in. You in Cali? Not too far from me, I'm in Texas for now till that northern pass job opens up.

>>28501362
Local 134 Chicago here. I don't care how high up a person is, they can own the company for all I care. If you put my safety at risk I'm going to let you know exactly how I feel, or maybe I take a dive off the ladder, blame it on the suit and get a paid vacation.
>>
>>28513657
Yeah, I mean I get that point too, makes sense because you guys worked to get where you are and we come in a little under you, but it's like anywhere else, if you pay your way to get in it's a little easier to get in, and I'm only 10k in debt.
And are you talking about the job from Nevada to Cali?

>>
>>28496798
On the technical side... it'll might disable it... But it'll probably drain the coolant. Then when that happens it'll catch fire. Then it'll go boom.

On the legal side... See below.
