Really depends on the used camos and the environment.

At best, the different camos can make it even harder to make out the human silhouette from the distance. Certain patterns, like the Finnish M05 and Flectarn, compliment each other very well. Sometimes the FDF uses snow camo pants with woodland jackets during winter, effectively concealing the men in the woods.

yes, specially when it's not that much snow outside so the terrain is a mix of white and woodland and you might as well not wear a white cover

I could see a use for having the pants be a flatter "ground" pattern and the tops being a more typical woodland pattern, but it seems more liable for the pattern to be ruined at different angles

Mixing two patterns is fine as long as both patterns are made to conceal someone in the same environment. They should also be chosen because they best mimic the overall terrain from the ground to three feet above it.

Mixing woodland and desert patterns in Afghanistan was in fact, quite not stupid. It's an environment which doesn't quite match either pattern, but which having combined patterns helps increase a broken outline.

Also, functionality trumps trying to be super duper camo'd. For something like Afghanistan consider that it is quite brown, meaning desert pants or uniforms make sense, but it is also extremely cold and most cold weather gear early on was in woodland pattern. So a woodland cold weather jacket and desert pants is perfectly logical. Same with wearing the "wrong" patterned loadbearing gear or plate carrier. When you're in a brown environment but have only green gear, well, you wear the green gear.

Some times you know the terrain is very mixed, not just in a few places

It's camo that is not perfect, but close enough

Back in ~2001, yeah. Dudes operated into Afghanistan with LBEs and LBVs. Look at those Special Forces guys making due with black fleece and an old timey SPEAR vest.

The market for custom oper8or gear didn't explode until dudes started deploying en masse to Iraq.

>It's an environment which doesn't quite match either pattern
Look, that means there's an inherent problem with the selection of patterns that were provided to soldiers. I'm not talking about soldiers having to make due, rather I'm speaking to the practice of choosing two different patterns because it looks cool. Pic related is some tripfag trying to look cool and represents what I said was stupid.
>functionality trumps trying to be super duper camo'd
I agree and never spoke to the contrary.
>>
>>28497934
>inherent problem with the selection of patterns that were provided to soldiers.
There was, and that's a choice above the people wearing the pattern. The soldiers on the ground, when presented from limited options were making a good choice based on limited selection.

This is how you can find examples of soldiers wearing mixed, but effective patterns. Take the vidya picture of the OP. Think maybe it's in a jungle where tigerstripe is the best camo, but the SEAL only has access to a tigerstrip top. It's better to wear it and some BDU pants than try to match with full BDU uniforms, no?

As to the tripfag looking stupid, yeah, tripfags do stupid photo op shit. I don't think anybody intelligent agrees that the application of somebody like that trip is anything but aesthetic wannabee SOCOM masturbation.

I think we're on the same page, I just wanted to respond because your original comment had lumped in pictures of guys like legit deployed Brits in with photo op fags as stupid.
>>
>>28495218
I still fucking play SOCOM 2 sometimes. 1 and 3 are fantastic, but 2's campaign is just fucking too goddamn good. It still stands up to stuff like ARMA 2 and 3.
>>
>>28497762
I agree with you, trying to plan your jackets camo to vegetation is stupid usually, but in Finnish case it is actually effective way of concealing itself. Winter camo pants are started to be worn when first snow arrives and jacket when tgere is even more snow. Idea in this is to blend your upper body to dark brown trees that haven't caught enough snow.

>Idea in this is to blend your upper body to dark brown trees that haven't caught enough snow
That's kind of an excellent example of flawed logic. In this case you are assuming that:
A: snow cover will remain constant from one area to the next
B: Vegetation will remain constant from one area to the next (it definitely won't)
C: Vegetation is a certain height
D: Vegetation is a certain color
E: Soldiers will be standing instead of crouching or laying in the prone
F: The elevation is flat

Look at the picture man. >>28496202
It's not working and the chances that it will work for moving infantry are slim. The woodland pattern has far too low of an albedo to properly conceal soldiers in snowy terrain.

As mentioned before >>28497934 function sometimes necessitates less appropriate camouflage. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, but trying to defend it as a viable concealment technique is a bit futile.

Can confirm. Did a week long bivouac in the Wemenuche wilderness in the San Juan range. We went off trail a lot to get to some really great alpine lakes right at the tree line for some trout fishing. Off the trail... fuck it's dense. Some areas you can barely walk between the trees.
