I want to become a relatively competent operator in order to prepare for the upcoming happenings (kebab invasion and all) but have ruled out joining the military because I don't want to be a leech and (pic related).
Other than acquiring firearms and practising shooting them at the range, what can I do to prepare myself?
Also I'm a Canadacuck if that matters.

Find a militia group that aligns with your ideals and has ex military (preferably officers) and ask them to train you.
Since this will be difficult to do without any connections, see if Canada has any equivalent to the U.S. Army National Guard, and enlist with them. Unless you are literally drooling at the mouth retarded, they will probably take you.

There's a wide variety of any type of milsurp available, from Tavors to SVTs. If you have the cash, you can get real fun stuff, like MG34s and anti-material weapons. ARs, pistols, and smaller-sized fun stuff is Restricted, but widely held, since everyone just gets an RPAL, really.
Mortars and such are not considered firearms, so do not require a license, though you'll have to make your own rounds.
Honestly, there's a surpringly large firearms market, in terms of scope and scale, though it tends to be ignored because we live next to America, and because of the "le quiet and polite Canadian :^)" meme.

1) take your non-restricted safety 'PAL' course. If you check on kijiji, you'll probably find an advertisement for one nearby
2)send in forms to RCMP, this will take a few months
4)do a shit-ton of cardio and basic strength training. Drink lots of water and get healthy.
5)receive PAL
