So I was reading Hannibal and noticed Clarice's interesting setup for her 1911

>"He pointed with his wattled chin at Starling's main sidearm, a well-worn Colt.45 Government Model with a strip of skateboard tape on the grip..."

This actually makes a lot of sense when I think about it, seems a lot cheaper than stippling. What are some interesting/unusual mods for firearms?
>>
bike innertube
>>
I don't know how you could possibly not know this has been a really common thing since skateboard tape was invented. Guns have always needed grippier grips.
>>
Dude people use skateboard tape for all kinds of shit that you need to make grippier. Gonna blow your mind here but you can use it on:

>ladders
>stairs
>hand rails
>bus aisles
>stairs
>ladders
>baseball bat
>hafted tools if you work wearing gloves
>tires
>cordless drill
>coffee mug
>dragon dildo
>>

Stairs and ladders blew my mind the second time around.
>>

Stipling is free, but I don't care for how it looks and at least skate tape is reversible.

Pretty much replacing everything other than the barrel and bushing, the Ti firing pin and spring, and the plunger tube itself.
>>
>>28454380
seems like it would have made more sense to buy a gun that didnt suck enough to need all its parts replaced
>>
>>28454447
It doesn't need it at all. It's been completely reliable. I just wanted to do it. I had some extra cash laying around and figured this would be more fun than selling it and buying something else.

Plus I learned a lot about 1911s in the process. My smith is only cutting my slide, frame for the Beaver tail, and doing the trigger job. I'm doing everything else.

>>
>>28454947
That's for a different reason, and different tape.
Skateboard tape is for a better grip.
Jungle mags are to increase you reload speed because you didn't want to put 20 rounds in your 20 round magazine because the spring sucked and couldn't take it, so you only had 17 rounds before reloading and reloading from the bandolier while retaining spent mags was too slow.

We don't do that anymore because
>our 30 round mags can handle 30 rounds
>we have learned to use dedicated dump pouches
>we have developed pouches like tacos and fastmags that increase reload speeds
>>
>>28454004
this.

if you're noguns, and reading it, this becomes a brilliant "insider" hack for 1337 operators.

if you attend one defensive pistol course, someone will mention this if not have it implemented

i personally recommend against modding your conceal carry weapon- prosecutor will insist you did it yo make your weapon "more deadly"
>>
>>28454380
When you replace every piece of wood on your boat, is it still the same boat?

At this point, just buy a couple parts and have two guns.
>>
Rubber bands wound around the grip - old school.
>>
>>28455124

This is the no.1 reason 1911's aren't reliable; home gunsmithing

You are literally asking for it. I've done it with some success and wish I had just saved the dosh and bought what I wanted in the first place instead of modding an entry level gun.

I know the allure to mod it is very tempting, but I would seriously reconsider.

Never heard an actual source so it may well be bullshit
>>
>>28455176
So should I just pay the smith to do it rather than doing it myself? He's a great 1911 guy who builds custom comp and defensive 1911s and has been in business for about 20 years now. I've had plenty of work done by him and it's always been great.
>>
>>28455177
This, especially with something as mundane as putting grip tape on. If that's the best thing the prosecution can come up with, your case is all but guaranteed to be ruled in your favor.

>>
>>28455269
Yeah, it just seemed like a fun project and I was initially going to have him do it all but then started reading about it and watching videos and began wanting to do it myself.

I'll just have him do it and find another winter project on something less finicky. Maybe I'm just headstrong because I overhauled a 500 last winter by refinishing a vintage stock and forearm set and replaced all polymer and low end parts. I didn't have to do much fitting though at all.
>>
>>28455324
I don't know but I'm not modding my glock or my Sig because I don't want to fuck with the trigger or anything because I'm more concerned about failure or something along those lines than I am a prosecutor unless the trigger was just too light and caused an accidental/negligent discharge.

>>

Yep, hammer/sear engagement should be done in a jig, disconnectors can vary in height, hell even thumb safeties can be finicky to get just right.

Best leave that one to a seasoned pro, you'll get way more enjoyment without the frustration of trying to make it work just right.
>>
>>28455400
Cool, I'll just have him do it. I'll post photos when I get it back. Just waiting until I get my W2 to see if I'll owe anything in taxes before I take it into the shop. I'm impatiently waiting, I started buying parts here and there in November.
>>
>>28455324
You dont want to heavily mod a potential defensive weapon, no. But grip tape, night sights, tac-lights, ect are not the issue. More so it's light triggers and handloaded ammo.
Also, I personally wouldn't recommend a punisher, molonlabe or zombie symbol on a weapon you may see in a courtroom.
>>
>>28455186
I enjoyed how Harris really played up the deadlines of Glasers. Unrealistic, but so cool. Talking about how they had only been used so many times, but had always resulted in an instant kill. Describing them as going off with a "hellish racket". That last scene where Molly empties the Bulldog into Dolarhyde's face, and the last line is something like, "He was slumped against the wall, his scalp was down to his chin and his hair was on fire." Man I love that shit.

I would say it's shitty half-customs where people try to have their cake and eat it too.
I found this, and this guy kind of put it in a very logical way.
An RIA runs because it's built on OG specs, a Wilson Combat runs because it's built by experts to be a high end product, a Remington doesn't run as well as either because they're trying to make it something it isn't while staying within a certain budget.

Literally just mediocre hollowpoints intended for hunting and shit. There was absolutely nothing special about them, they were never teflon-coated or armor-piercing, the black color was the copper being oxidized to (in theory) protect rifling (if I recall right).

You can still buy them, under a different brand name, Winchester SXT.

>RIP rounds
That's snake-oil though, so you shouldn't use those anyway.

The prosecutor is fighting an uphill battle either way if he's trying to get you on what tools you used.

So I'll take it to my gunsmith who specializes in 1911s and has been in business for 20 years. It's almost all wilson parts and I'll tell him to fit it for reliability. I don't care about the smithing charges.

YES!

I have a tuned 1911, and it required a quality smith. That stuff is never as drop in as claimed, and it requires fitting by an expert who knows what he is doing.

When we built my gun, it took several months, and he would install some parts, and I'd pick it up, shoot it, give him feedback, and then we either move on to the next parts, or adjust what I didn't like.

It was worth doing in the long run, but it's a project that requires patience.

Your Honor, I figure if the police use hollow points to protect themselves and citizens, then I should too.

>>
>>28461445
Much of it really isn't going to affect the operation of the firearm. I bought a few different weighted mainsprings just to find the right one for ensuring I don't get light primer strikes with a Ti firing pin. I'm going to start with the standard 23 lb mainspring in a new flat mainspring housing.

Pretty much it's going to be the trigger, sear, sear spring, disconnector, extractor, and ejector that are going to be what I'm most concerned about.

Unless I'm wrong, the commander hammer, beavertail, mainspring housing, hammer strut, slide stop and extended thumb safety shouldn't be too much of a worry. Oh and the magazine release, plug, recoil spring, and guide rod shouldn't take too much fitting I wouldn't think.

But yeah, when I take it in and go over everything with him, I'm sure we'll work out a solid plan.

Also rather than getting a new barrel, I'm just going to have him polish the feed ramp and throat.

There is literally not a single case in the USA where the weapon in question has been the turning point for the prosecution.

Either the shooter had committed another fault, or the prosecutor has nothing else left and is desperately grasping for straws.

More fucking excuses. Fine, play kitchen gunsmith. Stiple your shit up. You are still going to be an inferior shooter who has delusions of being Jack Bauer.

Fact: The very first thing the police will do with your gun is test the trigger weight and compare to factory stats. Forensic examiners have more armorer certifications than your local gunsmith. I wonder why?

Also, "grasping at straws" WILL be taken seriously. What you call desperate, juror #6 thinks is perfectly sound.

P.S. what is civil court?
>>
>>28461543
Notice how "don't talk to the police" gets repeated over and over and over?

Because people run their mouth all the time.

IF you are telling the truth AND IF you have a good lawyer that won't try to make deals because they don't know their asshole from their mouth you will get off even if you have a gun with 'Born to Kill', loaded with black talons engraved with swasticas and any other edgy shit you can think of.

The case is 'Were you justified in shooting a person who meant you grevious bodily injury or death' , not 'Do you visit you mother every Sunday?'.

>More fucking excuses. Fine, play kitchen gunsmith. Stiple your shit up. You are still going to be an inferior shooter who has delusions of being Jack Bauer.
>putting grip tape or a laser on my gun means I don't practice
Faggot.

>Fact: The very first thing the police will do with your gun is test the trigger weight and compare to factory stats. Forensic examiners have more armorer certifications than your local gunsmith. I wonder why?
[faggot citation needed]

Again, show me one case where a person was prosecuted and sentenced PURELY because of their trigger or their gun, you cock inhaling faggot.

If someone were to disengage the grip safety on their CCW (1911, XD, etc.) and use it in self defense, would they be in a world of shit, or would that just be waved off?

>>

Fucking Christ, I'll spell it out as research seems to hard for you.

1) Make it clear you were the victim. State that you will be filing charges.

2) Acknowledge that you have just been in a traumatic event, and that you need to calm down and will make a statement tomorrow.

3) Point out witnesses or evidence that is crucial. "his friends went thataway" or " That lady over there was outside" or "he came out of that blue nissan".

Defensive shootings aren't in the comfy context of your living room, where the attacker should not have been. It's in the walmart parking lot, where a bleeding kid is screaming "he shot me for no reason! he called me nigger!"

But lets be honest, the odds are against both of us being in a defensive shooting, so who knows.

Huh, at no time did you mention what schools, competitions, or training you have. I bet your practice is barely existent, and consists of indoor range target shooting at 3 yards.

Source: MAG 40 curriculum and link below (which took .03 seconds to find on google).

Here you go, spoon fed information from lawyers and academics in the field of self defense shooting. If you need help with some of the words, you might want dictionary.com handy.

All these people are older, richer, and better educated than you in this field, but I'm sure they're just faggots too.

I see a whole lot of ifs there, and mention of light triggers seem to relate to literal hair-triggers, which would be unsafe for any purpose.
I see mention of some faggot who shot his wife with the obvious intent of killing her.

Again, link me to some court cases where there was a defensive shooting where the shooter was actually put away simply because his gun wasn't standard.

Where are all the cases like that? Why don't we hear about people being put away? Bill had a laser on his LCR so the jury said second-degree murder, or that Johnny had a floorplate extension on his Glock 17 magazine? Why don't we hear about Steve being put away because he shot two home-invaders with his tricked out AR-15?

I should also point out that your weapon being taken for forensics isn't a guarantee in all places at all times.

You're arguing that you're educated, but you're not showing me any concrete examples or statistics, you're just saying "because that's how it is"

>>28462330
It's fucking true, the prosecution will try numerous angles, going for the gun itself is a last resort, I should also point out that we don't all live in California, Illinois or New Jersey, local culture matters for a jury as well.
>>
>>28462703
You won't get convicted for modifying your gun. That is a stupid assertion.

You will be convicted or lose civil case because your mods convince the jury that you were negligent/reckless/looking for trouble.

Do as you will, anon, but always know that when you put your faith in your gear and not in yourself, you will always fail.

So because I put grip-tape or a laser on my carry gun means I have no confidence in my ability?
>>
>>28462985

Grip tape and bolt on lasers aren't gun mods.

The fact that you think a laser is useful is what tells me plenty about your abilities. I've been truly lucky to get to train with some world class shooters. None of them use lasers. Front sight 4 lyfe, ya know?

Look, I'm not trying to give you a hard time, really. I just believe we (as gun nuts) will be better served focusing on our marksmanship, speed, etc than adding gadgets or messing with internals of a firearm.

I do believe that messing around with your defensive guns (sights, grips, notwithstanding), is a waste of your time and money, and that would be better served by taking a 2-day course from a reputable instructor.

I also think in the post Zimmerman era, the wrong people will use anything they can against you. Juries aren't gun nuts, and any gun nut will be excused most likely. A lawyer can easily argue that if cops and soldiers can do the job with stock guns, then why did you remove the safety/lighten trigger/ etc.

I wish you well, anon, but I've got top get back to work. It's been fun.

The normal Glock is too killy, so we good logical NYCers decided to make it harder to shoot.

The only way that could really get you (at least in a criminal case) is if the prosecutor tried to say you shot the guy accidentally. As long as you lawyer up and stick to an affirmative defense ("I shot him and it was the correct thing to do" vs "I didn't want to shoot him!") you should be fine on that count. Civil suits are a whole 'nother piƱata of bees though.

Yeah, John Brigham. She kept that shit in a case and brought it out only when she went to Muskrat farm to rescue Hannibal on her vigilante mission. She ended up ditching it and it was found later "causing an embarrassment to the FBI" because it was registered to her.

For those who haven't read the books, Mason Verger is far more twisted in the book than in the movie or show. If there's one book in the series you wanna read, it's Hannibal.
