In /k/'s opinion, what is the best type of sword for the average, untrained person to wield against other unarmed and unarmored enemies lacking martial training?

Katana, kopis, diphos...
Not necessarily in that order.
The kopis is the best IMO because it can be used for other things, like as a machete.
The katana because it's intuitive. Diphos is good.

A knife or a hand axe. Basically, you want something that's practical and you can hang on a belt.
A double edged knife is easier to use, but less easy to justify as a tool.
Just be forewarned, any knife fight is likely to end in you being injured minorly or badly, even if your opponent is untrained; most knife fights are won by one guy getting tired of getting cut and then getting dealt a lethal or fight ending blow.
Machete. It's one of the few functional blades you'll get without shelling out over a hundred bucks. Good for utility and as a weapon. A plain Ontario machete is pretty good and cheap. Cold Steel makes several machetes styled like other weapons like a gladius and a kukri.

Pretty much anything.
Weapons are generally designed to be easy to use, it's not like longswords are sooper dooper easy and katanas are ultra hard ninjas only. Just about anything with a decent point and a decent edge ought to serve just fine.

If you're untrained it doesn't really matter. A machete will do fine. A saber would be ideal especially since you're probably mostly going to cutting as hard as you can. The extra hand protection forgives alot more than most other swords.

It's intuitive enough.
machete is the best overall sword for modern purposes. it's cheap, strong, disposable. if you want to go full retard the longsword is the best overall classical sword (dual edge, strong steel, full hand guard).
If you must have an edged WEAPON do not get any machete, except possibly a barong. You want something designed for stabby thrusts if you want a weapon. Try a gladius or kindjal, they are similar in size to a machete and purpose-built to bleed suckas.

I'm not formally trained got my own long blade, for someone else I would recommend machete or kukri. I wouldn't even try to use a long blade unless I had no other option. Shorter blades are easier to carry, shorter blade is more intuitive to defend yourself with, longer blade is more obvious and more difficult to conceal your fucked with a blade if your not choosing your fight and trying to overwhelm with force. Blades are pure offense.

As a professional swordsmith, historian, and martial artist, I feel I can answer this with a degree of authority.
A handgun. .45 or 9mm, or pretty much anything else too.
The sword is obsolete. its gone the way of the chariot, and the battleship. they're great fun to train with, but using them is somethng else entirely. and you have to be fucking stupid to want to try.

Injuries are consistent with a long slashing weapon. Some bone damage so the dude must have had some muscles.
So yeah, a sword can be used in home defense. Personally, I'd go with a saber, it's lighter and has a knuckle guard. Plus, if I dress fancy enough I can strap one to my belt and nobody bats an eye.

Some infantry sabers are fairly light. A lot of cavalry sabers (read: most sabers) have a decent heft to them, comparable to a longsword. On top of that a lot of them have metal scabbards, and that can double the weight right there. I am a fan of sabers myself, but I would not really describe sabers as being light. Knuckle guard is a good thing to have though.
